What Games Are You Playing?

Decided to start replaying Final Fantasy VII as I tend to each year or so. I recently defeated the giant serpent and obtained the beta enemy skill.

Like Marvel's Spider-man, I'm splitting these as two completion titles because one of them did actually receive its own release back in the day (and the BFG Edition is like an HD collection similar to Tekken Hybrid).

Completed Game #21:
DOOM 3 BFG Edition [PlayStation 4]

DOOM 3 was one of the few big titles I never touched properly back when I was younger. The main reason was for its horror tone compared to classic DOOM which was more run and gun action. I did play the demo back on PC decades ago but the moment the horror began I just didn't continue. When the BFG Edition was announced I figured it was my opportunity to make an attempt at checking the game out and while I do own the BFG Edition on Xbox 360 I mainly used it to play classic DOOM in co-op with a friend. That was back in 2013, and we now fast-forward to 2019 where Bethesda and id Software had decided to bring the original three games onto the current generation platforms. While classic DOOM and DOOM II: Hell on Earth were worse than the Xbox 360 & PlayStation 3 versions, DOOM 3 BFG Edition was well-received and so I downloaded it last week with Marvel's Spider-Man: The City That Never Sleeps and a bunch of Rock Band 4 songs.

DOOM 3 certainly lives up to its horror as this is a slow-paced first-person shooter. A reimagining of the classic DOOM story, DOOM 3 goes for a different tone and it works surprisingly well with the graphics still strong as they were back in 2004. The lighting makes the game dark in both tone and visibility which made the original pretty scary as you could only hold either the flashlight to see or your weapon to kill the demons. The BFG Edition amends this by adding the flashlight to the weapons but the light can still turn itself off (and recharge after a couple of seconds) so the fear and uncertainty when you traverse is still there.

DOOM 3 continues to honor how many who loved the classic DOOM by keeping a lot of the main familiar gameplay mechanics and enemies back into the fray. Starting with the gameplay mechanics, you still need to pick up health items and shields when you explore the labs and hell itself. Weapon items, like health/shield items, can be found as you explore regular and hidden areas and if you're lucky you can find a new weapon earlier than the main base game's placement thanks to the lockers which require keycodes that you can discover by collecting collectible PDAs found throughout the story. The new addition weapon-wise was the Assault Gun which is very effective and helpful against most of the enemies throughout the game. While the Shotgun is back it's unfortunately not as good as the classic DOOM's version was, which is a shame because that weapon is as iconic as the BFG was throughout the franchise.

The enemies are a mixture of recurring demons and brand new ones. From classic DOOM you have the zombie soldiers, Imps (the ones that shoot fireballs), Pinky, Cacodemon, Lost Souls and Hell Knights. From DOOM II you have the Chaingunner, Revenant, Mancubus, and Arch-vile. New to DOOM 3 are soldiers with a tentacle as an arm which are a bastard to deal with because they're quite difficult to dodge, mini spiders with heads called Ticks & Trites that are pretty creepy, demonic babies called Cherub that is tedious, and then Maggots and Wraith are on the same difficulty as Imps but just try to get in your face.

The story is pretty good, basically, a mad scientist gets obsessed with hell and ends up bringing the demons to the UAC Mars base and it's up to the Marine to survive and stop them. The playthrough lasted a solid 7 hours on Normal difficulty with honestly no help from guides outside of the locker codes because I didn't want to go all out trying to find the PDAs though I did find a lot of them. The horror was pretty intense when you start, but once you reach a certain point where you have so many weapons it starts to get lighter in tone.

Overall, DOOM 3 is a solid entry in the DOOM franchise and one that I recommend checking out. I do feel that it's not as good as classic DOOM but it has a solid story and gameplay to make up for it.

Completed Game #22:
DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil (+ DOOM 3: The Lost Mission) [PlayStation 4]

When DOOM 3 came out the story actually left with a setup for a sequel, and to close that gap came Resurrection of Evil, an expansion that offers more content and the return of the Double-barrel Shotgun which thank god is as good as the one used in DOOM II.

Admittedly it's thanks to the Double-barrel Shotgun that the tone of the game starts to become more run and gun because the gun can KO demons in a single shot if you hit them close to you when it happens. Though regardless I still found Resurrection of Evil to be a solid installment to the DOOM 3 verse though there is one new additional demon that is basically a replacement of the Imps which are just dense and annoying to deal with. Alongside the shotgun is a new artifact that offers slow-motion gameplay (like F.E.A.R. and Max Payne) in addition to 'Berserk' (insta-kill punches) and invulnerability as you progress through the story. It's pretty neat but I surprisingly did not use it as much outside of boss fights and large rooms filled with enemies. There's also a Gravity Gun rip-off which was pretty pointless to add.

Overall Resurrection of Evil took around 3 hours to complete and it's a good conclusion to the game's storyline. I'm also going to mention DOOM 3: The Lost Mission which is a new addition similar to DOOM: No Rest for the Living in the Xbox 360 version, essentially more content using the classic DOOM 3 engine and it's alright for the short 90-minute length that it has.

And now it’s completed again. Still a great game and I’m hoping the remake shines too.

Unsure on the next game to play, maybe Bioshock or The Witcher 3, maybe something entirely new.

Completed Game #23:
Jak II: Renegade HD [PlayStation 3]

A few months ago I finished Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy HD remaster and it was a pretty solid launch title for the PlayStation 2 era. Jak II: Renegade is the next game in the series and it's very different in contrast to the previous in terms of its gameplay and concept. Jak II combines a mixture of platforming with open-world navigation and also shooting so folks have been comparing the game with the Ratchet & Clank franchise (which funny enough has a brief cameo in the game). While many have loved Jak II and after playing the game I can see why.

Jak II is much longer and has a lot of content in its story and some side-stuff to make up for its time. The open-world layout is pretty impressive though it suffers from some pretty bad vehicle gameplay, a mazey design that feels a bit lazy at places, and a lack of quick-travel which is essentially Naughty Dog's way of padding the game out. Note that the first game had quick-travel so this is a bit of a disappointment.

Next, we have the shooting mechanic and overall it does a pretty decent job but the lack of lock-on aiming ruins it at numerous points. You have to put yourself in the open in order to take out enemies that are in the air or further away and it can be a nuisance to sort out. The good news is that there is a technique where if you jump, spin and shoot it does a reasonable job though it can take up a lot of ammo. Ammo crates there are a lot of, and annoyingly a lack of health items which considering how much damage you can take throughout the game I would say health items would be better than ammo at this rate.

The missions themselves are reasonable and can last about 3-6 minutes depending on the content, however, the biggest problem that many have encountered is the difficulty. Now Jak II is actually not that hard to beat but the main issue is the lack of a proper checkpoint system because there are many segments that take up too much time to redo to the point where there's no checkpoint to help support players to progress. It's basically a 'finish the mission without dying' challenge that Naughty Dog has decided to do considering the previous game had a lot of checkpoints. I feel this is another way of the devs simply padding the playability out just to make the game a lot longer to finish and the reason I say that is because a lot of the deaths in this game are generally caused by the platforming design, the lighting in the game (because the game changes from day to nighttime randomly), and a few other reasons.

Another feature I forgot to mention is Dark Eco Jak mode which is basically his monster form. Now you can use the Metal Head collectibles to acquire new skills but honestly, overall I barely used his skill because 90% of the time you need to shoot the enemies.

Overall Jak II is a decent game, the story and characters are great and the design has aged pretty well. The lack of checkpoints during missions, the vehicle mechanics and the shooting mechanic not being perfect can ruin the experience but overall I would say it's still worth a play. It's in some places better than the first game but I'll play Jak 3 before I make a decision on whether Jak II is the better one overall.

Also to note, I do have the Platinum trophy for this game and the story took 13 hours 53 minutes of playtime. The collectibles as I mentioned before I used Debug Mode to acquire them to save myself the hassle of spending 20 hours more on the game of an otherwise already padded out experience.

I’m shockingly bad at rhythm games but I’m really enjoying this one. I find it easier to play on my tablet than my phone.

Completed Game #24:
Jak 3 HD [PlayStation 3]

Like Jak II I had never played Jak 3 before and now I finally got the chance to play it via the PlayStation 3 HD Collection of the trilogy. Jak 3 has been compared a lot to Jak II mainly because of some similarities to the gameplay, but honestly Jak 3 I found to be a big improvement to the second game.

Jak 3 is a shorter game and I'm glad about that because Jak II I felt suffered from a lot of padding and filler missions. This one is just about right and there's nothing wrong with a game taking at least 9.5 hours to finish. Outside of the shorter length the story itself I found to be decent and some parts pretty interesting but at the same time due to the length the story doesn't have enough development to be as strong as the others (though the final act was pretty hilarious at times).

The gameplay is basically the same as Jak II with a number of changes. The weapons are back and they now have upgrades which are really cool and honestly there weren't that many aerial enemies so I didn't need to complain about any lack of lock-on for targets. The vehicle gameplay is both better and worse; the good part is that it is actually quite fun to use them especially in an open area and the shooting parts work well on the vehicle, and the bad part is that turning the vehicle left or right is messy and the bumpy roads make things even worse for gameplay especially during some timed segments.

The biggest issue that I had with Jak II was the unbalanced difficulty and thankfully they actually brought back the checkpoint system so a lot of missions that would be considered ragequitting are now calmer and much better to sort out. You do get some parts that require perfection but it's not as bad as the previous game. The missions were alright, a mixture of platforming and surprisingly less racing.

Dark Eco Jak mode is finally made to proper use in this game and they even introduced Light Eco Jak mode which is also pretty neat, like gliding and even the ability to heal which was one issue that I had in Jak II (the lack of health crates). Jak does take a lot of damage from the enemies but you also get upgrades to your health which helps make up for it.

Overall Jak 3 was a pretty good game and a big improvement to the previous installment. However, despite my compliments, this game is basically Jak II Part 2 in terms of gameplay. Regardless it is still worth a shot and my favourite of the trilogy. Also got the Platinum trophy for the game. Like Jak II I used Debug Mode to get the collectibles out of the way to save myself hours of hassle.

I started Erica last night and I LOVE it so far.

I'm not very far into it yet, but I've actually been thinking about it when I'm not playing (that hasn't happened since the first Danganronpa), so it must be making an inpression on me!

Currently playing Dirt Rally 2 again and I am getting my ass handed to me. It is not even funny. The game itself is awesome but it is brutal when it comes to the difficulty level. I barely manage to play on the 60/100 difficulty.
Also this is one game which you cannot play when fatigue sets in. 100% concentration or you are gone for good :D

Working through one of my favourite JRPGs now -Breath of Fire - now that the SNES option is up on nintendo online. It suffers from the 90s translation issues but it's so damned good.

Anchorhead was released just over twenty years ago. I've been playing it on and off for about ten. I'm on day two of four, have a couple of pages of notes and have now drawn myself a map. I refuse to look at a walkthrough but I really wish I knew what this bloody brass key opened because I'd quite like to finish it before I die.

For some reason, I thought I'd finished Yakuza Kiwami 2. Nowhere near. I'm back on that and having a great time, as usual with Yakuza.

Also playing as Banjo on Smash Ultimate. I finished classic mode with a 9.8 rating on my first time playing as him, so I think he might be a bit overpowered TBH.

Played the Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III demo last night, can’t wait to get the actual game next month.

Switch is now all set up so I’ll be starting Fire Emblem: Three Houses.

I'm flicking between Link's Awakening and Yu-Gi-Oh: Legacy of the Duelist Link Evolution.

LA is wonderful, but the problems with the framerate are a bit disappointing. It's still one of the best Zeldas though and I'm impressed with how much I can remember from when I first played it! I haven't had to consult a guide yet, so I'm going pretty well.

I'm absolutely loving YGO as well. I've owned the (inferior) PS4 version for a few years, but I'm still having a great twice with the definitive Switch version (all DLC included, as well as extra story battles not in the other versions). I still can't get past the second Zexal battle, so I'm buying loads of cards in the store (with points, not real money) to try and build a better deck to use!

Completed Games #25, 26 & 27:
Ratchet & Clank HD [PlayStation 3]
Ratchet & Clank 2: Going Commando HD [PlayStation 3]
Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal HD [PlayStation 3]

Ratchet & Clank, like Jak & Daxter, was a game that I also once tried out when I was younger and for some reason, I never revisited those original games since. I did however check out the franchise once again when I received my PlayStation 4 thanks to the remake but at the time I basically rushed it so that I didn't have to put up with the game in my backlog as I was returning to University for my third year. Funny how three years later I now tackled the HD remasters of the first three games from the PlayStation 2 era before I return for my post-graduate at University.

Ratchet & Clank is an action platformer that puts a lot of emphasis on combining puzzle solving, platforming and third person shooting at the same time and it works really well. You could say its similar to Jak II & 3 in terms of its shooting aspects but really this series is basically a remake of Spyro the Dragon with space, aliens and shooting instead of fantasy, dragons and dashing into enemies with fire. Insomniac did a really good job creating this franchise with the way the level structure and gameplay have been setup.

The stories and characters in each of these three games are both interesting and likeable without too much faults presented. The first game was a bit rough in places on the pacing, difficulty and character development but I found the story and villain to be handled much better than the 2016 remake that was on PS4. The second game improved on a number of content from the first with tons of new additions, better pacing (outside of one or two instances) and a pretty solid story throughout. The third game, much like Jak 3, is an oddity for a few reasons; the level structure is more linear, there's a lot of content cut out, the story is strong but some parts are so-so and while at the same time I found this one to be the most enjoyable to play overall. The second game is no doubt the better game in terms of its content but the third game, like Jak 3 again, feels like an instalment I am more willing to replay than the second.

Each game has a basic concept. You go to each new world and receive either a new item to proceed, new story knowledge or a special inclusion such as a new weapon or a secret collectible. Each game has bolts that are collectible that can then be used to unlock in-game items. The second and third games also introduce upgradable weapons to different levels once you reach its new game plus mode called Challenge Mode. Challenge Mode lets you keep almost everything but also makes the small bolts easier to acquire and earn while the enemy AI is tougher to deal with.

The first two games introduced racing, whether its hoverboards or a vehicle, grinding rails using special boots, or some combat in space. The second and third games also have arena combat which is a nice way to unlock more small bolts and help upgrade new weapons. The third game is more stripped down but it also features a new mode where you help rangers defeat the enemies in a couple of locations, which are basically maps recycled from the multiplayer mode.

The trophies for this game are pretty easy to acquire, however, they can take you at least 25 hours per game to complete. The first game would have been sorted a lot quicker if it weren't for the 1 million bolt trophy which is very slow to acquire and can take you numerous hours unless you use a glitch that gets you onto the hoverboard course and infinitely acquire some bolts from a couple of crates. The second and third games have similar goals, with 2 million and 10 million bolts respectively, however they are much easier to acquire thanks to multipliers added during Challenge Mode which for every enemy kill you can get the multiplier up to 20x.

The first and second games bolt trophy does not require you to have all of the required bolts at once, however, the third game does. Outside of bolts, you also have health upgrades, weapon upgrades, skill points, and bolt collectibles to acquire in order to get the Platinum trophy. These are all better than you would expect however the first two games are reportedly a bit buggy in some places.

Overall the Ratchet & Clank HD collection is really good. I had a lot of fun playing them and can see why they were one of Sony's top titles from the PlayStation 2 era. The Sly Cooper trilogy will be tackled next later down the line for the PS3 brand but at the moment I'm going to take a brief break since I did go through like 5 games at once (Jak II, Jak 3, Ratchet & Clank, R&C2, R&C3).

Loving Borderlands 3. I chose FL4K. I love my Spiderant and named him (I know it's a her) immediately, I now chase down anyone that kills him haha. Upto about level 21, reached where I want to in my Hunter tree, the last skills don't seduce me so I'll be moving onto one of the others now ensuring I keep my Spiderant and Rakk. Co-op split screens still crazy slow but it's not ruining the experience for me really.
