What Games Are You Playing?

Since I have Rare Replay now I started Banjo Kazooie last night. It’s quite fun, and the controls have adapted well to the Xbox controller. The main improvement is the right stick camera, it’s very easy to use.

Just finished the main story of Fate Extella Link. I'll do the extra battles at some point but for the time being I feel like going back to Dragon Quest 11.

I'm in two minds about Link. On the one hand it's made a lot of small mechanical improvements that have made it a better game than the original Extella, which was basically a "go to point A, mash button, go to point B, repeat". Well, that's still fundamentally what Link is but they've at least managed to make it feel a bit more varied. And the extra battles are a lot better than the faux-story mode for the non-main characters that Extella had, which were basically just boring slogs through the same battles over and over again.

On the other hand the story is considerably worse. They've got the outline of a story but it's just very barebones and lacking detail or depth... not satisfying at all. In contrast to Extella's story which was very good. It's not actively bad, just frustratingly short and arbitrary. It very much feels like a filler installment prior to the hinted return of Velber.

Currently playing Metro:Exodus and Don't Starve Hamlet.
Metro is one of my favorite survival games about nuclear war together with Fallout.

I'm just wondering what DOA games people recommend. Havent played one since 3 so I was just going to get a copy of either:

Completed Game #07:
Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom
[PlayStation 4]
With the anime returning I decided to start the Dynasty Warriors/Musou spin-off in anticipation, and it's surprisingly good. The controls for the game does take some use to but it is very satisfying overall. It does have some flaws especially when you take into account the pace of the gameplay and also the camera but it works for the majority of it. The game adapts the entirety of the first season plus tidbits of the events afterward (though in its own spin due to the game being developed before the second season had aired so they didn't want to spoil the surprises). You have three sections; the main story mode covering the first season, the survey missions that are individual mini tasks that take up the pace, and the epilogue missions which is what I mentioned earlier.

In order to unlock the epilogue missions, you have to complete at least 60% of the survey missions in each area to unlock the five epilogue missions available and it's honestly pretty tiring after a while. I recommend you take your pace with this one to keep your enjoyment going throughout otherwise you'll feel knackered. Each character does have their own playstyle, for instance, Eren can use his Titan form, Armin can get AI teammates to attack the target he aims, and Levi can deal multiple hits against a target without stopping which is pretty handy for later difficulties.

Overall to complete the story and epilogue missions it'll be around 15-20 hours in total, and honestly this game is worth picking up if you can find it for a bargain price. There is a 'remake' of sorts in the form of Attack on Titan 2, most notably Attack on Titan 2: Final Battle which will cover the anime events of the first, second and third seasons (including Season 3 Part 2). In Europe due to various reasons with the name, it's called A.O.T. instead of Attack on Titan.

So with that said, I did also play Akiba's Trip 2: Undead & Undressed and unfortunately I messed up. I started the game on Hard mode, hoping to consider going through the game for a potential Platinum trophy but what I didn't realize was that you are not supposed to start the game on that difficulty because your abilities are under-developed and can get killed easily. Therefore I will someday restart the game on Normal difficulty to keep the game going at a better pace.

Finally getting around to playing Resident Evil 4 on PS4.
(Playtime: around 15 hours including many retries). This is a fun game, though it did become a bit repetitive towards the end. I also felt that the aiming system was a bit awkward, but overall I can see why this is such a well-loved game. 3.5/5

Completed Game #08:
Akiba's Trip 2: Undead & Undressed
[PlayStation 4]
As I mentioned in my previous post, I started Akiba's Trip 2 back in March however I made a grave error. Basically, it's recommended that you start the game on Casual mode (i.e. Normal difficulty) and this is because of the combat. The enemies are pretty brutal if you don't have the right equipment so as a result, I had to 'leave Akibahara' on my Gamer mode playthrough. The good news is that New Game Plus allows you to carry over virtually everything except your level, story mode progress, and side-mission progress.

Akiba's Trip 2 is a sequel to a PSP game that was never localised outside of Japan. The concept is simple, vampires are in Akibahara and the only way to defeat them is by stripping their clothes off so that the sunlight can essentially burn their body. As you would expect, there is indeed fanservice throughout this game but it's balanced between both the male and female characters. The story for Akiba's Trip 2 is simple but not perfect by all means as the motivations for the villains are so so. It is overall entertaining enough, though given this game was localised by NIS America I suspect there may have been some loose translations in the mix (for instance your dialogue choices have references that don't seem like they came from the original source material).

The combat in Akiba's Trip 2 is both the most interesting part and also the most frustrating. Depending on how you customise your controls, you have three buttons to press with each covering a part of the body you attack - the headgear, the upper clothes, and the lower clothes. Once you deal enough damage to any of those parts you can then strip them off, and if there are multiple enemies with similar conditions you can perform a chain reaction which is very crucial if you want to survive the higher difficulties (but its also satisfying to witness). When you defeat an enemy they will drop items and loot that you can then make use of, whether you want to use synthesis to make a better weapon or clothes, or to sell them for more money. One of the reasons why I find the combat to be frustrating is that the enemies are pretty good at destroying you in terms of dodging and not giving you enough window to perform a counter-attack. These are mainly down to the fact that your clothes and weapons are not at the right level in terms of progress. Which is why for your first playthrough in the game I recommend starting on Causal mode just so that you can get your weapon and clothes up to 999 max. While you may think 999 is overkill, Gamer and Otaku mode have enemies that are like 2-3 times more powerful than you at that level.

In terms of the story, the game has different routes depending on how you interact with the characters. The routes included are for Shizuku (the main female protagonist that tags along with the main character), Tohko (the childhood friend), Rin (an idol who is also connected to the Akiba Vampire incidents), and Shion (a woman who is part of an organization also connected to the Akiba Vampire incidents). There is a side-mission route related to Nana (the main character's little sister) that can be done alongside any of the routes above but unfortunately, there is no route connected to the foreign character Kati. The character designs for the game were done by Akio Watanabe, known for the Monogatari anime franchise. Personally, I like Tohko the most but I also liked Shizuku and Kati as well.

D54la6xXsAALQ_d

Lastly, I can't talk about the game without mentioning the cameos. This game features references to a ton of video games that came out around the time the game was released in Japan, these include Border Break, Conception II, Disgaea, Divine Gate, Hyperdimension Neptunia, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Mind Zero, Super Sonico and a couple of others. You can also unlock items from these franchises, for instance, I picked up a Mishy headcap and gloves for the characters (Mishy is the mascot for Falcom's games). The fact that you can see of these games' trailers playing throughout this is pretty cool.

Overall the game can take a few hours to finish just the main story mode on its own, but for the first playthrough with the side-missions sorted along the way it took around 12-15 hours. Once I sorted out the character routes and the higher difficulties roughly 27 hours total were spent just to acquire all of the trophies. Yes, I did manage to acquire the Platinum trophy for the game which was surprising, but once you sort out the character routes you can get a majority of the trophies sorted by then so I figured there's no harm spending a couple more hours finishing the game completely.

Now I'm back on Detroit: Become Human.

I'll probably finish it one day, just like I'll probably finish off some other games at some distant point in my life. Until then, I really like Detroit. I loved Heavy Rain and Beyond too, so it's nice to have more of the same!

Completed Game #09:
Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition
[PlayStation 4]
I first played Devil May Cry 4 back in 2009 when I rented the Xbox 360 version. I liked it but I couldn't progress much as the difficulty was quite challenging. I did eventually check out the HD Collection and was able to finish Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 2 on Devil Hunter mode (Normal difficulty). For some reason I never bothered to pass beyond the prologue for Devil May Cry 3, but fast-forward years later into 2017 and I was able to acquire a physical copy for Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, the HD remaster to the seventh generation title.

Devil May Cry 4 is set after the events of Devil May Cry 2 and follows two protagonists; Dante, our DMC mascot, and a new boi Nero. The difference between Dante and Nero in combat is with Nero's arm which can use demonic power and it's pretty handy against some of the enemies throughout the playthrough. Dante on the other hand is overpowered but you have to use different combat strategies when fighting the demons and bosses due to his layout. Throughout the game the difficulty is not too bad provided you upgrade your health and abilities as soon as possible. The boss fights were better than expected, though there are some that were more on the frustrating side rather than challenging, most notably the main villain of the game and the way he goes around in the boss fight.

The Special Edition version improves the gameplay with better resolution and frame-rate but also adds extra content in the form of new playable characters. Considering all of the new characters essentially revisit the same missions you already progress through, I decided not to bother with them, but they are there if you are a big fan of the franchise.

Overall the main story took around 15 hours at least, with a total of 20 missions available throughout the story as well as secret missions available throughout. I did manage to reach the SSS rank at least in terms of combat so that was neat.

Completed Game #10:
Ys I Chronicles+ (Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen)
[PC/Steam]
I first heard of Ys (pronounced 'isu') back when Nintendo added Ys Books I & II onto the Virtual Console, hearing that it was a classic RPG from Falcom it's peaked my interest ever since, but I never got my hands onto the franchise until I bought & received Ys: Memories of Celceta (the 2nd remake of Ys IV) for the PlayStation Vita. Eventually, I picked up Ys Origin at launch for the PlayStation 4 & Vita but I put it on hold since it's technically not the starting point of the franchise despite being a prequel. Fast-forward to the present time, I finally delved into the Ys Chronicles collection from Steam, which was gifted to me by AUKN Discord member Luke (the biggest Falcom fan I have seen, which is a good thing) for my Birthday last year.

Ys I Chronicles+ is an updated remake of the original Ys game, initially called Ancient Ys Vanished: Omen or commonly known at the time for the western fans as Ys: The Vanished Omens if you picked it up on SEGA's Master System. The game is relatively short, about 5 hours long, but it's got one of the most intriguing gameplay concepts I have seen for an action role-playing game. Basically as Adol, the franchise's red-haired protagonist, you equip your weapon, armour, and shield, and essentially kamikaze into the enemies. No joke, there is no need to press any buttons to attack, you simply walk into them. Genius, ducking genius.

A lot of JRPGs at the time also relied on you manually using items to heal your character, but in this game if you stand still in the middle of a village or acquire a special cloak item, your health will replenish slowly which means you can progress without freaking out if your health gets low during combat, though this won't work during boss battles even if the cloaked item. As Adol you travel around the place locating the Book of Ys to stop the evil villain Dark Fact from spreading evil throughout the world, while along the way you bump into two blue-haired girls as you proceed to the Darm Tower for your big battle.

Ys is a great introduction to the franchise, it has a cool gameplay concept and a pretty good difficulty balance during the game. The final boss will test your patience as he is a nasty one to beat. You can interact with the people around the game as well which is a little neat feature to introduce some character interactions, the dialogue even changes for the NPCs as you progress through the story.

Completed Game #11:
Ys II Chronicles+ (Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter)
[PC/Steam]
Of course, I couldn't help myself by diving into the second installment of the franchise. Ys II Chronicles+ is an updated remake of the second Ys game, initially known as Ancient Ys Vanished: The Final Chapter. This installment takes place straight after the events of Ys I, where Adol now has to stop Darm from causing havoc in the floating island of Ys. This one takes the first game's concept and expands it with more gameplay tweaks and a longer game. The playtime this time around was about 7 hours.

New additions to the gameplay include being able to use magic, like firebolts against enemies, camouflaging as a demon to bypass and communicate with enemies, and teleport to different villages without hassle. The magic is pretty neat, but I mainly focus on walking into the enemies as it's much more satisfying that way to defeat them, though you have to use the firebolts to defeat the bosses which are cool but also quite disappointing. The final boss doesn't require firebolts thankfully, and he's easier to defeat than the last game's final boss.

Overall Ys II is an improvement to the previous game and a great addition to the franchise. It ends on a fitting note, but you know that its not the final chapter because there were many sequels since then! In terms of the Ys series, I have Ys Origin and Ys VII: Lacrimosa of Dana in the backlog, but I'll probably take a break from Ys for a little while.

Started playing Our World is Ended. So far, mixed impressions:

Positives, if you get the physicial release it comes with a bonus art book (contains spoilers), I like the character design, and the characters themselves are entertaining enough - these characters include a chunibyo game writer, and a tone-deaf composer who seemingly breaks any tech she touches.

Negatives, as it is a visual novel there is relatively little input from you as the player, there seem to be a few spelling errors in the text, and the fan service gets annoying after a while.

That composer character I liked, who I mentioned in my earlier post? Things just became awkward. Turns out she's into shotacon.

Trying to weigh up whether or not it’s worth buying post apocalyptic survival strategy game Frostpunk while I have a 50% off coupon. At first glance it sounds like my kind of thing, but the more reviews I read the more it seems a lot of people’s praise of the game hinges on the fact it makes it difficult to do the right thing and has you face agonising decisions about your people’s welfare.

Now, it’s entirely possible for me to get emotionally invested in games, but only really when characters are well written and fleshed out enough for me to care about them. In say, an RPG or an adventure game. When it comes to strategy games though, the Stalinist “one death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic” mindset takes over - Strategy games, really, are about creating efficient, functional systems. That’s why I enslaved and put to the sword the populations of nearly every city I conquered in Rome: Total War. It’s why my CKII rulers have a penchant for murdering children. Not because I’m personally malevolent (honest) but because that’s what I found worked best to enable my continued success/victory. There’s probably a Machiavellian lesson there somewhere.

As such I’m wary that Frostpunk may not be for me if it’s as linear and lacking in replay value as people seem to suggest - I’m not going to flinch at enforcing 24hr child labour or allowing cannibalism. Still, for £12.50 I am kinda tempted.

Finished Yakuza 0 again, it’s still a lot of fun and it’s a shame Majima isn’t playable elsewhere outside of 30 minutes of Kiwami 2.

I’m likely going to pick up Judgement when it goes down a bit in price and I’m curious to see Yakuza with some Ace Attorney style gameplay implemented.

Just started Persona Q 2. I never finished the original Q (due to getting distracted and forgetting what I was meant to be doing ^^;), but I'm having a blast with 2 so far thanks to the Persona 5 cast.

I think the unfortunate truth is that while I like Persona 3 and 4, my love for 5 far outweighs it so I'm always going to get on better with a game featuring them. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to map out dungeons in these games, so hopefully this time I can keep at it without getting distracted by a different game.
