Two new Geneon anime licenses

Geneon recently posted clues of two upcoming license announcements in the Geneon Lounge.

The clues were:
Difficult Hints:
1) Both titles star a group of young girls dealing with their daily lives.
2) Both had comics serialized in Dengeki Daioh magazine and made the cover for several issues.
3) Each show has had a figure made of the lead character.
4) One show was created by BARASUI and the other by BESAME MUCHO.

Fans on the AnimeOnDVD forums soon deduced from the clues that the anime in question are Kamichu and Ichigo Mashimoro. Expect Geneon to confirm these later.

Kamichu I havent seen any of although heard a mix of things...

Ichigo MOEshimoro (Im a comic genius you see) has character designs so scary I dont think I'll be checking it out.

Direct your eyes away from /c/ 4chan for a minute!

While this news of Kamichu and Ichigo Mashimaro may be great to those who like their underage loli - There are numerous other shows that deserve to be licensed.

Let's take Kamichu for starters. It's something that Ghibli would do if they made a series, which is precisely why I don't like it. The main character is a Chihiro rip-off and her God powers are about as exciting as waiting for bird flu to arrive in the UK. We all dread it! ;) However, it is slightly better than..

Ichigo Mashimaro. What can I say? The character designs are extremely moe and considering the oldest is 19 and looks 12 - there must be something wrong here! Why of course there, within the first episode we see panning and extremely painful long shots with the girls..especially their clothes. You wait 5 minutes for something to happen and instead you get a whinge of complaint that passes off as actual conversation.
First episode was: Girls stay for a sleepover. They make a birthday card/cake. Yep..exciting stuff!

Geneon are really scraping the barrel but it could be tactics to hit on the Loli market! I think I'll pass - they were in my top 5 worst anime fansubs of 2005 for a reason.

Ah no.

Kamichu! is great. Stunning animation for a TV anime, and the way that the natural world overlaps with the spiritual is both cute and quite novel (though its probably much more familiar to a japanese mindset). Drop the loli comment too.

I mean what are you expecting from a slice of life anime? Don't diss some of the best modern examples of the genre simply becuase you can't appreciate the genre. You should just say that you don't like slice-of-life anime. The whole appeal of these titles is how the characters go through ordinary activities, and the simple charm. What did you expect? Mai Ichigo?

Kamichu! is critically acclaimed, underfansubbed and very imaginative. Ichigo Mashimaro is quite popular on fansub. Both of these are pretty good licenses - they are nice and small too so could be quite successful for Geneon.

Offended by the truth? I'm sure there are lots of people who appreciate this type of anime. I didn't like it no. As for loli comment, it's sticking. :p

Best modern examples? People would argue with that statement, it's like Marmite. You like it or you don't.

Did I say in my post that I disliked the genre? No I didn't. So, don't go about assuming with your 'superior' opinion. If you want slice of life, look out a window.

I expected something engaging and worthwhile. The very thought of Mai Ichigo is disturbing! Am I supposed to like action anime such as Mai Hime/Otome because I can't appreciate the finer details of loli's roaming about?

Yeah, probably will be for the wrong reasons. I just hope for a better license next time. :D

So, a series is branded 'loli' simply for having pre-teen girls in it?

Are you insane?

I can only agree that Ichigo Mashimaro isn't packed full of high-tempo drama, but that's not what it's trying to accomplish, is it?

You say that people shouldn't jump to the conclusion that you just plain don't like 'slice-of-life' anime, but if you do then why don't you rubbish these shows by saying x of the same genre is better, rather than lazily branding them anime kiddie porn?

Quite sane infact. I don't brand every show with pre-teen girls in it loli, so get your facts straight.

A bit of excitement wouldn't harm the show though.

I'm not going to provoke 'which genre is better argument' as it's a waste of time to be honest. I brand Ichigo Mashimaro as loli because there is no denying the market it's aimed for, especially with the undercurrents within the show. I never said it was porn - now that's jumping to conclusions. Would it be better if I described it as moe then? Not really.

Sorry fanboys, I'm only stating my opinion before you jump to the defence of the anime. I feel sorry, if you can't accept that all anime has it's faults. I'm merely pointing them out.

The license itself is nothing special to me - but it has it's fans. Too many if you as me. Now, please stick back to the topic instead of trying to defend it.

And yet your brands are here. Sorry if I generalised. And questioned your sanity.

Depends what you deem exciting. Action sequences or melodrama would change the nature of the show.

I agree, I was trying to ask you to compare these shows to similar ones that you regard as better, seeing as you weren't happy at being accused of disliking the whole genre. Sorry if I worded it too clumsily.

I guess you have a better idea of it's target market than I do then, but I can't see why you'd label it as loli when it's not sexual in nature. Forgive me if I've completely misunderstood the loli label.

An opinion is open to criticism and I'm not trying to claim Ichigo Mashimaro as a faultless anime show, but I did feel tagging it as loli was unjustified.

Sorry for getting into the reply-breakdown tennis match, I won't do it again

I tend to think people overuse the term loli, they scream it every time they see an anime with a child in it which is just stupid.

Loli is a phrase coined from a famous book called Lolita in which a male character falls in love with a young girl. In anime and manga terms, lolicon is NOT a nice phrase to be throwing around a public forum like this. I haven't seen any of Ichigo Mashimaro myself but it looks like one of those ultra cute, innocent and ditzy series that the Japanese often delight in producing, kind of like Azumanga Daioh, which I thought was really funny and off beat. Ichigo doesn't look like my kind of thing, but it would be nice if people were more careful in their sensationalist generalisations; after all, don't we critisize The Daily Mail for doing exactly the same thing?
