Trailer Madness

There's no way I'm watching the Yogi movie after seeing the (real) trailer - maybe I'm just idealizing the cartoon, but Yogi's voice for the film is an absolute abomination.

I saw the trailer for Yogi and was not surprised by my lack of enthusiasm. I have the book On Strange Tides so I'm going into this Pirates movie with an open mind (even though I found the every previous one entirely dull).

The Fighter

Rango looks good... well... better than other animation due out like Rio and Animals United. Maybe I'm being unfair but neither trailer grabbed me and Rango gave me a good chuckle.

Tree of Life directed by Terrence Malick - I really liked The New World so I'm hoping his latest is as visually sumptuous.

I'm not sure how genuinely excited for it you are, Gen, but a couple of (imo, respected) people's first impressions of The Cape are... not great. It is campy (well, duh) and has way to much exposition. Makes No Ordinary Family look great in comparison. NBC have also shoe-horned the first two episodes together which, and they don't narratively flow together, making it quite cringey to view.

This isn't terribly surprising. I'll probably still watch the first couple for Summer then leave it. I doubt it'll get any more than the 13 already filmed episodes. Esp. with new NBC Pres, who'll want to introduce their own shows.

In better super-hero TV news, FX's Powers by Brian M Bendis seems to be gaining a lot of traction. Not sure exactly where it is in production. Best keep an eye out for for it.

And, here's Paul:

I was looking forward to something along the lines of Kick Ass (real people in a real situation trying to be super heroes) but toned down for television. I'm not really surprised at the mixed reactions. Thanks for the update.

Here are more trailers for things you might be watching in 2011.

Wait, surely there have been more than five seaons of Dr. Who already? I mean, I don't actually watch it because it's total crap, but still. :p

This is Nu Who after the Russel T. Davies (Queer as Folk) reboot. The latest producer is Moffat and is taking Who into dark fairytale world (fantastically creepy and melancholy) and the latest season has people like Gaiman writing for it.

You've lost me there somewhat as I haven't really paid much attention to the good Dr. since... about five minutes after I first saw any of it, but can I take that to mean this is season 6 of some new version of the show?

Now this interests me. I was quite intrigued initially, several years ago when I first heard they had decided to resurrect Doctor Who. Then the initial Christopher Eccleston episodes disapointed me (especially after Richard E. Grant being in that animated webisode - an f'ing perfect Doctor if ever there was one) and I stopped watching. I have seen a fair few of the David Tennant episodes due to other people I know being fans, but it all seemed a bit too kiddy for me (sells merchandise I guess) and the "special effects" cheap-arse BBC tat which just made me cringe even worse than some of the horrendously clichéd writing. As a result I have seen none of the Matt Smith episodes at all. But perhaps that's been a mistake.

If there's anything I'd love, it would be for the BBC to cancel their next big-budget natural world filming exercise ("Life of Nature on the Blue Planet Earth" or some-such*) pump every penny of that cash into a more grown-up Doctor Who and finally give Britain a contemporary sci-fi show to be proud of.

*Don't get me wrong, I love David Attenborough, but I swear every time I turn one of these programmes on it's Wildebeest traversing a river. Plus there have been enough of these kind of programmes now. Seriously, stop.

My two cents: I absolutely abhor Davies' writing style. He throws ideas, plot points and characterisation at a wall and see's what sticks. There's never any structure or real charm to it, and that's why I struggled to watch Doctor Who for five years. I love love love Moffat though. If anyone has indeed jumped ship due to the previous writing style, give him a go. Even his first episode, by the end, you should be in love with him and the new series. If you don't want to judge him on Doctor Who, the BBC's recent Sherlock series was one of the best shows on TV this year. A very smart update, especially compared to the other recent adaptation of Holmes.

ayase: There's fairly good special effects this year, too. When its there, it's probably on-par with what Stargate put out (or did put out) every episode.

ilmaestro: the Doctor is never cheap. So, here and here.

If the Christmas special is still on the iPlayer, it is fairly accessible to newcomers. I mean, I wasn't focusing and found it confusing as hell but everyone else says its a fantastic episode that everyone can enjoy.

What Jayme said.

Seriously, New Doctor Who has some of the sharpest writing in British television and the special effects are good. I'm a big fan of Steven Moffat and his episodes were always the highlights of the previous seasons (Blink, anyone?).

The last season had some of the best episodes yet and I am looking forward to season 6.

Superbowl Madness! First two are Avengers, third is Pirates, fourth is Transformers, fifth is Super 8 (woo!) and sixth is FOX's new Spielberg produced dinosaur show.

Captain America and Thor look good. Transformers and POTC? Swerve dat. Super 8 I know nothing about and I'm interested in Terra Nova.
