I think monster is a brilliant choice for adults who likes drama and horror.....I stand by this
 
Dragon Ball (Z), Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon, Robotech, Starblazers would be something like the top five. After that the cutoff is... steep.
 
I meant in terms of proven, historical shows that introduced the most people to anime. If someone wanted to try watching some anime these days there are so many options that you could tailor it their individual tastes a lot better than you could at any other time in the past, so I wouldn't have a "general recommendation".
