The great Best Girl debate

You'd think this would be a tough question, but it isn't

Kanako Oono from Genshiken.

I'm in awe of just how diverse everyone's choices are. Here's an interesting question:

How much do your favourite anime girls mirror your real-life preferences? (In terms of either physical characteristics or personality traits.)

Is there any overlap? Or are they two completely separate things?

I'm not exactly the target audience of this thread but it's difficult to say, mainly owing to the tragic lack of homocidal, sexually aggressive demon women or sadists with silver hair and glasses in my everyday life; nobody can come close enough to approaching the perfection of my favourite characters to make a fair comparison. On second thoughts it's probably best to say that my real life preferences are completely different to avoid any awkward questions.

Seriously though, I don't really have a 'type' in reality. It's more of a blacklist than a whitelist once the basic intelligence requirement has been met.

I chose Oono because she mirrors real life preference. :-D

For me the two are pretty much exactly the same. I've always liked strong women. By which I mean strong in the traditional sense. By which I mean can bring a swift death to their enemies. I don't have the manga to hand, but I recall in an interview in one of the Black Lagoon volumes Rei Hiroe is discussing the female characters of the series like Revy and Balalaika, and says something along the lines of "Women like Margaret Thatcher, that's what I like" and while I wasn't a particular fan of her politics, in terms of pure sink-your-Belgrano nerves of steel I can certainly see the attraction.

I have my particular kinks in terms of appearances too, and they kind of shine through with a preference towards short haired and even androgynous tomboys on my chart, but honestly this has a bit more flexibility when it comes to real life. Really, both areas have to because in terms of both appearance and personality my favourite kinds of women are very, very rare.

Honestly I think this is a better question than the original one.

Unfortunately, my answer will have to remain in the "not really sure" category. There are certainly characters that I like that would annoy me to no end in reality (or that I would dislike for other reasons), but like them as characters either because I like their interactions with other characters, or because I get to understand them better than I would ever understand a real person, or simply because their quirkiness adds to the series/franchise. Such characters tend to not be my absolute favourites as a whole but can be my favourite characters from their individual series. Yaya from Machine Doll, Akabane Eiri from PsyCome and Kawakaze from KanColle are notable examples of each of these three respectively (although the third is far from my favourite character in the franchise in question).

Meanwhile there are other characters that I'd never get to know in practice but if I did I'd probably like them. Quite a lot of my favourite characters are the type who are very much devoted to one other character and thus wouldn't even look at me, or wouldn't care about me if they did. Others reject socialising in general, which would also fall into this category. In these cases I suppose it would be right to say that there is an overlap in my likes. After all, I guess in a hypothetical situation in which we were forced together then there would be... shall we say, interest... there.

There are so many variants of this second group, which can thus be extended to cover so many characters, that the third grouping, that of characters that I would be likely to actually socialise with and that are my favourite characters and that I would get on with is actually rather small. Perhaps that's why I don't have any friends. Ah, well.

As for appearance... I'm really not fussed about such things, and it's so rare for anime characters to be outright unattractive that there are very few that don't meet my low standards in this regard (and those few that there are are usually minor/background characters or characters that exist for a single gag or a fetish that I don't have anyway and thus wouldn't be characters that I liked a lot no matter what their appearance).

Did someone mention breast girl? Surely that would be...

Shizune Fuutou from some hentai game called Oshioki Sweetie.

I remember seeing a picture of that figure in an issue of Hobby Japan some years ago. Crikey.

Yeah, but the waters become muddied on breast girl as soon as you start including hentai. Or so I've been told. From a friend. Yes, a friend told me.

I have some things to delete. Completely unrelated.

Yep, muddied with filth. :p

Would any of the things you have to delete be in any way related to this, by any chance?

That's some specialist merchandise right there. Could you imagine going into PC World and asking the staff, "Excuse me, do you sell mouse mats with boobs?"

I believe that's Nitro+'s buxom mascot Super Sonico. So classy. The cream really elevates it.

If that type of thing shocks you, then I advise you never to go to the J-list website. Seriously, don't go there. Even if I have a specific item in mind that neccessitates going there, it's still not a place I like to hang around too long. :D

Oh, I see... Is that who it is? I was wondering because, uh, I'd seen that picture somewhere ages ago and, like, you know, I could not for the life of me place exactly where I'd...

Okay, fine: I have a copy of the Sonicomi art book. The picture's in there. Happy now? :p

Why settle for a book, when you can communicate with Sonico? :D

Sonicomi: Communication with Sonico

This thread has been derailed. It's something else now. I blame Watanabe Ken.

Gah! Blocked. That'll have to wait until I'm not using a PC in a public library, then. :p
Ha, that was perfectly safe for work. (Such dependable smut peddlers.) :D

You know, I can't comment on the game, but my favourite character in the Sonico anime is actually her manager! He's got a similar kind of bland, business-like politeness going on as Sonico herself, but that hannya mask just makes him so much more interesting. And funny.

I guess the fact that my favourite character is a guy rather than any of the girls kinda means I'm missing the point, eh?

Come to think of it, who is my favourite anime girl in terms of personality, I wonder...
