Regarding Urusei Yatsura I more see your point (though Ataru is still pretty disgusting and I would kick him if he ever came near me because just the drooling (when he's horny) alone is one of my biggest OCD triggers) but most of these films are 18-rated horrors many of which include sexual violence that makes me, a seasoned anime fan who has watched a wide range of things, distinctly uncomfortable, they're not a couple of steps more grownup than the teletubbies they are mostly honestly pretty disturbingly violent, I mean, ya know, just saying, maybe this guy prefers to watch stuff that is somewhere
inbetween these two extremes of "content designed specifically for very young children/toddlers" and "content beloved by disgusting men who want to rape and otherwise abuse women" (I am emphatically not arguing that those are the only people who would watch these things, but it is worth noting that they are popular with these groups because they have what they like in them in spades).
I think A Thousand and One Nights is interesting though dated yes in some ways (certainly kinder in it's outlook than many of the other films mentioned in the article), and Perfect Blue I think the assessment is somewhat unfair (though it is still undeniably brutal both in it's psychological treatment of Mima and in some of the things she dishes out to various unsavoury men in the film
I mean a guy literally gets stabbed in the dick in one scene complete with graphic blood spurt), but most of these films do contain multiple scenes that would be upsetting to say the least to a lot of people, particularly to women and other people who've been victims of sexual violence, and just being like "lol so easily offended" is a really lazy argument.
I'd also note that something being created by a woman does not automatically mean it's completely ok, like I have a lot of respect for Rumiko Takahashi and Ataru is clearly meant to be somewhat of a creepy d-bag so I think the reviewer missed the point somewhat regarding that one, but yeah women can and do write things that make excuses for/romanticise abuse sometimes, like I'm not gonna argue that it doesn't change the context of
some things if you know it was written by a woman rather than a man but it's not an automatic get out of scrutiny free card. And before someone brings up censorship you will note I didn't argue in favour of that, but goddamnit Kawajiri this is why I won't rewatch anything by you apart from Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and Cyber City Oedo 808.
EDIT: I hate to have to point this out but there are
loads of anime out there without (graphic sexualised) rape scenes in them!
