The General Conversation Area

Following on from the volunteering I am starting soon, I went to a meeting about local public transport accessibility today too, there are some really good things happening to make buses and trains better in our community for everyone. It's great to see how much is being considered, from hosting bus boarding events to making literature in 'easy read' formats and employing people to show transport users which of the new bus stops in the new bus station they need to use. People do seem to get listened to in this area which is great. There are so many groups keeping the pressure on the local authority!

If anyone is heading to MCM this weekend if you can take pics of the Banpresto booth I would appreciate it as Bandai said they'll show off new DB, OP & Naruto figures!

Living one's best life moment! 🥰 The first wardrobe arrived today and it's really lovely, now to sort out the other rly big one I wanna get :) Here's a couple of pics of the first one that arrived today! :)

I definitely feel the popularity of Halloween is increasing. I had 49 Trick-or-treaters today and that's only counting the children dressed up in costumes asking for candy.

One of the earliest was a young girl as dressed up as Billy the Puppet from the Saw movies. She had the tricycle, outfit and makeup, etc. I can't imagine she has actually seen the movies her costume was based on.

Zero here, I think that's the first time I haven't even heard the doorbell chime once. Though I do probably live in the sort of area you don't want your kids going out after dark.

I'm currently on holiday in America. It's hard to find stores that sell blu-rays again so I might order some stuff from Amazon.Com and bring it back with me.If any with the UK users want me to pick them something up, stuff it in a suitcase, send it to them to skip customs charges then let me in the next day or so. I need to order quickly.

By the way: Publics is identical to Sainsbury's. Walgreens is like some unholy fusion of a B&Q and Waitrose. It's a really off-putting.

I can't even remember the last time I walked into a brick and mortar store here in the US and actually bought an anime release off the shelf. The last anime I even ordered on-line and then picked up at a local store was at a Best Buy before they completely dropped Blu-rays - and that was a copy of Studio Ghibli's The Wind Rises back in September of 2020. I could probably count on my 10 fingers the number of Blu-rays I actually purchased in-store off the shelf since I started collecting anime 12 yeas ago. Walmart, Target, and maybe Barnes & Noble book stores are probably the only places in the US that may carry any anime in-store at all anymore.

I wonder, does the US have any kind of CeX equivalent or don't you really do second-hand media retail any more? I haven't been state-side in many years, but I did manage to visit all three Amoeba Music stores in California (back when the LA one was like a warehouse, it's relocated since then apparently) and thought they were pretty fantastic.

Not that I am aware of, at least in my area of the country. I only know of FYE (For Your Entertainment) that did carry used anime releases years ago, but they still sold the used stuff at close to new retail prices, so not too many bargains. I guess some of their stores are still around, but I haven't visited one for probably 10 years. There used to be a fairly big chain store that specialized in used media and had a big online presence, I believe it was based in the western part of the US, but I can't even remember their store name anymore - they went out of business about 4-5 years ago.

Still doing a bigg hecccin' flat sort, this has finally spurred me on to get rid of lots of stuff I have that I don't want, am just giving a lot of things away at this point tbh cuz it's generous and also quicker than selling it, it's been quite eye-opening in a way as to just how much junk one person can accumulate, like I think I have a whole friggin' 4-shelf racking unit thats 90cmx60cm180cm full of things I don't want and that's not even including all the old papers I need to go through on a different storage rack that I can't just give away!! XP

Well, the Mormons have my DNA now. Don’t go cloning me or anything, believe me, you don’t want that. Fascinating stuff, where do I apply for Scottish citizenship? Ancestry DNA got my father’s maternal (East Yorkshire) and mother’s paternal line (West Cornwall) down with pinpoint accuracy when I zoom in, quite impressed with that. I’m a little disappointed it wasn’t able to be more specific wrt Scottish regions, but I suspect the fact my father’s paternal line is from the Glasgow area and my mother’s maternal line from the Edinburgh area may have confused things. That or they don’t want to offend any Scots by suggesting their ancestors were from the other side.

I’d be interested to know (if anyone else has done Ancestry DNA, perhaps) whether the maps are generic or individual, it doesn’t seem to offer any hints in this regard. For instance whether that glob of green over Normandy actually suggests Norman ancestry or if it just forms part of the generic “England & Northwestern Europe” region for everyone. The “Germanic Europe” region seems very broad and generic, but then it is also accurate enough to be able to discern my lack of Welsh ancestry…

It’s been really interesting learning more about how genetics works. Like I would honestly have expected more Irish than that but if genes don’t get passed on, it seems that’s pretty much it for them and you can end up with very little genetic material in common with even relatively recent ancestors. Life on Earth is basically RNG.
