The General Conversation Area

You might get lucky with a supermarket model.

I can remember when the supermarkets started doing cheap DVD players, they came region-free out of the box. Probably my best DVD player buy was a 'Compacks' model which came region free out of the box, £20 and it came with a free DVD of Snakes on a Plane, just under £20 from Amazon. The remote was a bit cheap (and eventually broke), but the player never missed a beat (and was a compact model)

Well I'm getting a bit unlucky. Recalling what I said a while back, I mentioned that Maken-Ki! didn't work on Aiseesoft's BD player so I decided to switch my disc drive to Region 1. Now I'm at home (with a different connection in contrast to the accommodation) and I decided to try and get Power DVD 13 again. I did try the trial and it was very very good to use, but this time it didn't open up for me. I tried PowerDVD 12 and to my surprise I ended up with a purple screen for Blu-rays (DVDs were fine, strangely). So now I'm stuffed for Region A access, since VLC takes care of Region 1 because it's techincally region free for DVDs.

Overall, I have a PS3 for Region B & 2 (with some A titles from Sentai/Viz to use) and VLC for Region 1.

Anywho, one of my presents arrived and it surprised my mum to how big the box was (Hint, it's the One Piece Box Set).

I use VLC for region A blu-rays as I've set the region for the blu-ray drive on the computer to region A.

It's good, but it's annoying as you've got to play a game of finding the title screen as it goes straight into title 1.

I'm pretty sure VLC can't play Blu-rays yet due to the recent updates. I tried it once last year but it only worked with The Inbetweeners Movie.

I believe you can on OSX/Linux, just not on windows unless you use something like AnyDVD HD like I do.

The thing about those is that they rip the discs, I rather just play the disc like I would play the disc on a real player (obvious comeback would be: get a region free BD player).

I'm pretty sure I've explained this to you before.

You run AnyDVD HD which decrypts the disc, nothing more. You CAN rip the disc and play the files but you don't HAVE to.
All you do once the disc is decrypted is navigate to the BDMV folder on the disc and play the files individually in your preferred player (MPC-HC with the Kawaii Codec Pack for me as everything is supported including BD Subtitles), or if you have BD Playback software on your PC just do what you would usually do.

One advantage of running the discs this way is that you can freely change the audio and subtitles at will, even if they are usually locked. You also don't have to deal with region locks.

I guess, but now it's a matter of getting a working BD player on my PC. I re-installed PD12, and while it does play the discs and the sound, the video's are on a purple screen.

Sounds like copyright protection. Try the anydvd hd trial and see if it works afterwards.

Ahh yes, that technique I used for the film last year. I always ended up with the same problem everyone had. AACS Library I think it was.

My task for tomorrow is this: fit a full day's work into four hours, travel by coach up the M1 during what are predicted to be gale-like conditions, and finally wrap presents.

At my calorific disposal I have an apple, a small pie, a nondescript mousse, and a pair of luncheon-meat sandwiches. I can but accept the odds that fate forces upon me.

Or you could just go for a macdonalds, chase it down with a coke and be on your merry way north lol

I'm in work, seems abit surreal being in the office this close to xmas, usually i'd take annual leave for the duration of xmas and come back in the new year. This time around i've taken new years week off and i'm working today, tomorrow and friday.

Have loads of presents to wrap tonight, chances are though that i'll leave it till tomorrow night to sort out as i'd rather play gran turismo 5 (which i picked up for a few quid yesterday)

Have just a few weeks left with my KA, as of feb 1st i hope to have myself a 5 door ford focus mk2, a 2litre engine will be a nice upgrade on my 1.3, sure i'll be spending £5k on a car, but it'll be a family car that retains my love for modification, the bumpers will be replaced with the RS ones and a nice RS spoiler too. twin cherrybomb exhaust and cold air induction will be a welcome upgrade to the stock intake.

If anyone wants to know what the end result will look like, google image "ford focus RS" a lime green monster should be staring back at you :)

I saw something today which made me cry

Heading into town for some last minute shopping, the traffic had stopped near a roundabout, coming closer saw flashing blue lights of a police car & ambulance, with a bent bicycle on the ground :(

I only hope for the sake of the family, the cyclist will make a recovery.

That's sad, the weather is quite dangerous out there. This is probably the worst time for Christmas to happen here in the UK. I'm guessing these heavy rain and wind are supposed to be snow but never gets to it.

It is COLD today. I'm so tired but after work I have to go home and clean the house as the boy's parents are popping over to drop off gifts seeing as he doesn't want to spend christmas with them this year. He's spending it with me and my family instead. After they've f*cked off I then have to bake a cake to last us xmas and boxing day. No rest! lol :p

Is everyone else Christmas prepped?

Does anyone have any NYE plans? This is the first year in a while I don't but I'm surprisingly not arsed. I'm off that day so I'll probably go and see Anchorman 2, Frozen of The Hobbit during the day.

I was watching the news earlier on how some parts have had a months worth of rain fall overnight, rivers breaking their banks, fields and roads turning into lakes.

Lots of trees down in this area, power went off for around 15 minutes last night (just after midnight).

I waited patiently for this moment, I just finished watching The Hangover Part III. I loved it, yes I'm aware that everyone hated it because it was serious and not like the first two. But that's what the director wanted for the second one where he instead decided to take the 'play-it-safe' route with the same concept to ensure he wouldn't alienate fans, and that film did well in the box-office.

I also watched the Time of the Doctor episode, too much filler but it was cool.
