The Gaming News Thread (for news that doesn't need a thread)

Heads up for anyone planning to watch the Summer Game Fest stream this evening: adblockers are currently preventing the Youtube website from loading. It doesn't appear to affect Youtube videos embedded on other sites, so here's a link. Also I'm seeing some places saying it starts at 10pm GMT, but the video placard says 9pm. Is there usually a pre-show or something?

I think it's just the countdown, not too sure how SGF do it.

Looking forward to what gets announced here, I really enjoyed the State of Play a few days ago so I'm hoping this will be great too.

Absolute two hour slog fest for me and endless bait and tease. However, that surprise at the end made it totally worth to endure. Very lucky for Geoff as I was gonna snatch his banana trainers if he did not reveal RE9. He panicked knowing this and gave in 😅

It was just about worth sitting through two hours of copy-pasted dark fantasy soulslikes to get trolled and then untrolled by Capcom for the new Resident Evil.

Aside from that, a few things looked semi-interesting, but nothing else had me massively excited. Felt That Boxing looks entertaining, but it seems to be PC-only. Atomic Heart II looks good, but so did the first one until the reviews landed. Infinitesimals seems promising, but I could do without the giant spiders.

Also most trailers fell into the usual Summer Game Fest routine of too many cinematics, not enough gameplay.

Day of the Devs was underwhelming. Photography heist-planning game Snap and Grab was the only exception, but it implies that you don't get to play the actual heists aside from planning out instructions for your crew on a noticeboard.

Caught up with sony's from other day, seems underwhelming to say the least, not sure due to getting old😅silent hill f did look good those

The Expanse is getting an action RPG that's looking very Mass Effect. I wonder which will take longer to be released: this or Mass Effect 5...

That trailer was pretty much the highlight of the Future Games Showcase. There was also a release date reveal for surprisingly impressive-looking indie stealth game Eriksholm (15th July) and a summer release window reveal for fantasy herding game Herdling. There were a few other inventive indie games among the roguelike mulch, but nothing that appealed to me.

The Xbox showcase put up a solid fight in this week's trailer wars. Fortunately most of the interesting stuff is coming to PS5 too.

Here's Game Freak (yes, the Pokemon developer) showing that their games don't have to look 25 years old if they have more than 12 months development time and aren't running on a potato.

Korean SF shooter/stealth game that looks flashy and quite promising.

I was startled when this cyberpunk trailer turned out to be Call of Duty. Unfortunately that probably means the campaign will be over in 3-4 hours.

And here are a couple that sadly aren't coming to PS5.

And here's some stuff I ran into while skimming through some of the dozen other trailer reels from this weekend.

High Times is a dating sim/cooking game set in a doughnut cafe, but I can't find a separate upload of the trailer.

And this...this...uh...words fail me.

There was that store listing for a Xillia remake before the Graces f one was announced which has led to Xillia being rumored as an upcoming game; perhaps there was more than that to it though.

I'll take either one. Abyss has the advantage that with being an older game from an older console, has the potential for more of an upgrade, though also the possibility of a disappointing rerelease as with Symphonia. The Xillia games would be more like Graces f where they will be not as much of a change since they're from PS3 and already quite nice there. But as someone that kind of despises English dubs, having Xillia 1 & 2 with the Japanese voice acting available will be a big upgrade for me personally, just as it was for Graces f.

Whatever it is, I hope it is still released for PS4, as I don't have anything newer and can't justify a newer console due to the high costs of them now.

I could see them announcing Person 6 for the anniversary, but there's not a chance they're releasing P4R in early 2026, given we've seen absolutely nothing so far and it's already June. More chance that P4R is mid-late 2026 and P6 is late 2027 or even 2028.

Persona 3 reload was announced June 2023 and released Feb 2024 so not out of the realms of possibility.
I'd also argue they're far further on than it seems as the amount of assets they'll reuse must be numerous.

You have the character models you can reuse from the dancing games, but I can't imagine there's a great deal P4-wise that can be used again at this point and possibly not a lot from 3's which fits the bill.

I do see your point re: P3 tho, and I am hoping that will be the case here, although what might throw a spanner into those works is if they decide to launch P3R on Switch 2 later in the year / early next and use that as an excuse to push out P4R. They're not going to want all these things out that close together, after all, since it risks oversaturating the market.

Finally. Clear River Games have announced pre-orders for Sky 1st Chapter! Some nice looking goodies in there too for the special editions.

Defo pre-ordered the Bracer Edition if I can. I'm guessing it will be exclusive to their own website.
