The 'Boxing' Thread

Alright, I'm a big anime fan and a big boxing fan. I'd be interested to see if there's anyone else out there who is both a hardcore boxing fan and also a hardcore anime fan. It's a strange combo I guess but lets see.

Post it up, whether you're into actually 'doing' boxing or just watching it. Anyone out there know their Calderon's from their Pacquiao's?

I'll start with the most obvious and popular boxing subject from recent months.....Pacquiao/Hatton. Did anyone expect that? I mean, Hatton was expected to lose but like that. Pacquiao's left hook was sensational. One of the best knockouts I've ever seen in recent years. Can the Pac-man keep following in Armstrong's footsteps? We'll see.

Anyone looking forward to Cotto/Clottey & Darchinyan/Agbeko?

Okay, I'll shut up now.

PS, I'll accept a bit of MMA talk. Machida/Evans tonight, CAN'T WAIT!!!

Yes, I am, actually - quite surprised to find someone else who is. :) I don't box myself but I watch as much as I can.

That was the single best KO I can remember at that level of competition, but I wasn't surprised - I didn't think at any stage that Ricky should have taken the fight.

theres an interesting one that chaos got last year at the expo, though i forget what it was called...so give him a buzz

No idea about boxing, but I love Hajime no Ippo (boxing anime) and I've seen a few episodes of Ashita no Joe (another boxing anime, but a really old one).

Ashita no Joe is, imo, the greatest and most iconic sports manga that will ever be written. I see why people like Ippo, but Joe is timeless.

I agree with ilmaestro on ashita no joe. it is ludicrously difficult to get a hold of any of it in english thought.
Never seen a fansub or scan of it in english and I could only find a few eps in italian - as my italian is far from any good, I ended up droppign it.
There are two series of the anime.

A proper boxing anime would be fun but I'm not sure how far they could go with it.

ilmaestro: Not surprising that Hatton lost that fight but yeah, the KO was one of the most vicious you'll ever see in a mega fight. Who you got winning between Cotto & Clottey? Looking forward to that. I wanted Clottey to win before I heard about the prospect of a Pacquiao/Cotto fight. Now I'm kinda leaning towards Cotto. Here's how I see the fight, Cotto will control the early rounds but by the mid-rounds, Clottey will back him up and get to him. However, Clottey being Clottey will fade in the later rounds with Cotto rallying to a UD win. Pacquiao/Cotto sounds great on paper but Pacquiao (even though considered p4p no.1) would be the underdog in my books.

ps off topic, anyone catch Lyoto Machida KO Rashad Evans last night? Machida is the truth when it comes to MMA. No one is touching Machida for a long time. Rampage or Shogun next, both will be taken out. As they said last night "Welcome to the Machida era!".

I'm not a massive MMA fan really, but I might check that fight out if this guy is supposed to be that good.

I think Cotto is a difficult one to weigh up at this stage. I don't think the Jennings fight told us enough about how he will handle a tough fight after the big loss to Margacheato. However, before that fight, I didn't think Cotto was beatable so I probably stick with that idea and see Cotto grinding out a stoppage in the last three rounds. I wouldn't want to see him fight Pacman. I know this seems churlish to say at this stage, but the size difference is just too much. It will be noticable if Pacman fights PBF, it will be silly if he fought Cotto imo.

100% agree with you. Any fight involving Pacquiao sounds great but Mayweather & Cotto are just too big for him. That being said, with boxing being the way it is, Pacquiao/Mayweather will probably happen. But to me, this smells of typical Mayweather match-making. Dude retired when the welterweight division was on fire and it still is but what is he doing? Un-retiring and probably taking on two smaller fighters. God forbid that Mayweather actually take on a legitimate welterweight. I can see him beating Marquez & Pacquiao and then suddenly announcing his retirement again. That being said, I wouldn't rule Pacquiao out completely and my heart will be 100% behind him.

Just read today that Alexander/Witter has been added to the Darchinyan/Agbeko card. This card looks as great as the Marquez/Diaz & John/Juarez card. Looking a lot more forward to this in July than Mayweather/Marquez.

Again, it's worth checking out Lyoto Machida's fights. He's a breath of fresh air when it comes to MMA. Dude is about the only fighter in MMA who fights out of a karate stance. When it comes to UFC, most of these guys use a muay thai stance, meaning they have to stay alot closer to their opponent. Whereas, Machida fights from a few paces back and uses his karate along with the normal MMA practices to the point that he is probably the most elusive but dangerous fighter you'll ever see. He's about as excited a boxing fan can get with MMA.

That does sound worth checking out, I'll definitely hit up some vids of him if I can find them.

The Witter fight should be exciting. I was super disappointed with him against Bradley - but then I was super disappointed with Holt against Bradley too so maybe I'm selling Bradley a bit short - so I really hope he's on top form.

Witter is one of the more under-rated boxers in the UK, mainly because he was always in the shadow of Hatton and his loyal fans. Witter got too much stick for the Judah fight but people should remember that he was a last minute replacement. As for the Bradley fight, I think his father passed away or was ill so I don't think his head was there. Even so, Bradley was impressive, especially after being knocked down the way he was by Holt. I couldn't believe he got up from that like nothing happened. All credit to him because he was set to fight Guzman but it looks like that's fallen through now. As for Witter, it's pretty much a must-win against Alexander. I hope he does well but we'll have to wait and see. Alexander is a tough prospect, much like Bradley.

ilmaestro: Also, if you got a spare 5 minutes, check out another decent MMA fighter on youtube, the video is called the greatest fighter to have ever lived 2.0. It's about Fedor Emelianenko, dude is an absolute animal.

Guzman is a punk, I can't remember the last fight negotiation involving him that actually went through (although I don't know the specifics this time).

I'll check out that video - I saw Emelianenko on a show called Sports Science the other week, to see how much force he can use when choking someone out, and how little force he actually needs. He did indeed look like quite the animal.

ilmaestro: Such a shame about Guzman, such a wasted talented. He really wasted his career away after the fiasco with Campbell. Although Campbell was just as bad in his next fight with Funeka. I wish Guzman/Campbell had happened. Would have been a great fight. Guzman, if he wants to continue, has to work his way through the ranks again. Not just expect another world title shot.

Did you manage to check out any vids?

You looking forward to this weekend's slugfest, involving Valuev/Chagaev. I hope Chagaev takes Valuez to school again.

Aaron: Indeed he was. Machida is definately someone to look out for from now on. His speech was great also. Came across as a decent guy and I'm surprised how much he won the crowd over during the fight.

Hehe, Heavyweight boxing these days... I'm pretty much only looking forward to Haye KOing the Klitschkos, but I will watch that fight.

I just saw Machida's win over Evans on Setanta. He ****ed him up good! Great finish, although as usual with MMA it was a little bit sickening the way Evans went down (not that this doesn't happen with boxing, of course, as the Pacman/Hatton fight showed) which is one of the things that puts me off.

Haye KOing the Klitschkos,
Seriously?
Did anyone catch Chisora's interview on Bunce's setanta show the other day? My word that guy is full of himself!

I don't think anyone really knows how those Haye/Kiltschko fights will go down. What I do know is that Wladimir won't be able to pussyfoot around like he usually does, because Haye's too quick, and hits too hard.

ilmaestro: You don't like the brutality of MMA? Man, wait till you see the Fedor video on youtube, if you haven't already seen it. He makes Tyson look like a school girl. In Japan, they allow 'soccer kicks'. You'll see what I mean when you see the video. I guess that's why MMA is becoming the most popular combat sport these days. It's pretty much where boxing was in the early to mid 1900's. I personally prefer the sweet science. MMA can be too much about cheap thrills, whereas it'll never compare to an epic contest like Corrales/Castillo. That fight is so great that it brings a tear to my eye.

Lyoto did a great job, I like him because he actually shows great skill, not just the brutal street fight aspect of MMA. I don't think anyone expected him to do that to also undefeated Evans. It's weird how he's suddenly become a knockout artist. 2 fights ago he was content with going to the scorecards.

As for Vlad/Haye, Dizzae, I wouldn't count Haye out. There's too many unknown factors going into this fight. Vlad should be considered the favourite for sure but if Haye manages to get in there (which he should with his kind of speed) & tap that chin then it could be over. But then we all know what Haye's chin is like too, no doubt he'll get knocked down at some point but he's shown the cool before to get up from a knockdown and win the fight. Plus if he does get in trouble, Vlad is a bit of a plodder so Haye should have the speed and angles to give Vlad real big problems in this fight. Neither fighter has ever fought anyone like eachother so it's gonna be real interesting to see.
