Overseas The Aniplex Thread

Aniplex of America is a company that have released quality products at controversial prices. Many people hate them, but others like them. It all depends on whether the customer is willing to spend that much for these titles. The company started off with a strange line-up of Baccano!, Oreimo, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, R.O.D. (Read or Die) and Rurouni Kenshin OVA/Film Imports. All of which did really well for them and as time passes, more and more Aniplex titles have been picked up and released in similar fashion, though recent titles are not as packaged well in contrast to the ones released in 2013.

As of Summer 2015, Aniplex of America are no longer bound to just Aniplex-related titles as they have now licensed a non-Aniplex title; GOD EATER.

This thread will pretty much be both a discussion on the company's titles as well as a guide for those who want to pickup their titles. The spreadsheet below will also include Aniplex of Japan products that contain English subtitles that were once released by AoA themselves.

Are Aniplex of America sets region free?

With the exception of Kiznaiver as that title belongs to Crunchyroll, the rest of the Blu-ray releases are all region.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba does utilise a geolocking method but it will still work on PlayStation and Xbox consoles that support Blu-ray discs.

Are there any faults with these Aniplex sets?

A majority of the Aniplex releases have no technical issues. Some titles did use a lossy Dolby Digital audio on the Blu-ray disc but is still watchable (the UK & Australian releases use an Linear PCM audio option instead). Translation for newer titles has dropped in quality but it is highly unlikely the UK & Australian would improve on it unless they had the funds or talent to make the changes, so in the end I would argue it would make little difference in the decision making unless it's a series or film you aren't a massive fan of owning.

How long does a limited edition last in stock?

This varies with certain titles and the availability of other English friendly releases. Fate, Monogatari and Sword Art Online are the three main franchises likely to stick around the most, but overall I suggest you acquire the specific show or film within 30 months (2.5 years) after it has been released on home video.

I want to buy an Aniplex of America set but have no idea where to look! (UPDATED)

You have two methods to pick up Aniplex releases. The first is Rightstuf which is Aniplex's main go-to for their releases as the retailer has an exclusivity deal. They lower the prices slightly (and a bit more during Christmas season) but you will have to deal with both the postage and VAT & Customs clearance i.e. 20% of the package price and postage cost. Starting 2021, thanks to the UK's Brexit transition period, every international retailer has to provide VAT upfront so it's basically similar to how Amazon handles their Global shipping system. However, there have been no tests to see if orders priced over £135 maintain the VAT upfront.

The second approach is through United Publications. Usually the UK community would make use of their US site, but because of the VAT changes, it's now cheaper to use their UK site instead. The site takes care of the customs clearance for you which leaves you with the item price and postage cost.

I love owning music on CD and I'm afraid of skipping out on the Aniplex sets, should I force myself to grab them asap?

In recent years we have seen popular soundtracks from Aniplex's catalogue get re-released in Japan as a standalone product including music songs that were initially exclusive to a limited edition Blu-ray. So if you are a Demon Slayer fan and wanted to own the music on CD, I do recommend you relax and simply wait for Aniplex Japan to make it happen because the chances are higher than you think.

This logic is also why it's worth looking at the UK & Australian releases if they replicate everything except the soundtrack for their sets as you can save money. It's weird saying that because this is an Aniplex thread, but there's no harm mentioning it if you want to save additional funds and reduce stress.

Is Aniplex and Funimation one entity? Are Funimation going to dub all of Aniplex's titles?

A popular question by many anime fans throughout. The simple question is no, they are not merging whatsoever.

Sony does technically own both Aniplex and Funimation, but it's a lot more complicated that it sounds. While Aniplex does have an exclusivity deal for Funimation in terms of streaming, they have no intention on making all of their titles go through Funimation's home video authoring process. For instance Demon Slayer, which is the first title Funimation was able to offer a standard for, still uses Aniplex's discs but they stripped out the on-disc extras and added geolocking.

Manga Entertainment will be distributing Demon Slayer: Mugen Train for the UK & Ireland but this is currently a one-off case and does not suggest they will take over the franchise in the meantime.

On the plus side, Aniplex is perfectly fine with letting Funimation dub their titles if they want to, but currently the newer shows at the moment. Funimation have dubbed Darwin's Game, The Day I Became a God, Horimiya, SK8 the Infinity, SUPER HXEROS and Warlords of Sigrdrifa so far. Funimation could dub older Aniplex titles but for now there are no plans or confirmation that would suggest otherwise.
