Where do you go for your Gundam news these days, kupocake?
Not very far :p I lurk the mahq.net forums (heaven forbid you say too much there. Some of their users are bizarrely full of themselves) and keep a weary eye on ngeekhiong, though he does tend to post a little too much 2chan runoff.

Neither are regular stops for me. We're lost without Gunota Headlines :p But then, I'm not exactly scrambling for Gundam news (I haven't purchased models in a while and I was always an avid window-shopper rather than a collector) and in the 30th Anniversary year, it's been difficult to not hear about the major news from more generalised anime news sites. It was nearly impossible to not hear about the full-scale Gundam on most non-anime news sites!
Yeah, since Gunota Headlines was finished up I've been very much behind the times, far too lazy to search for my own news. ^^; I already had Ngee Khiong bookmarked, too, guess there are no real hidden treasures of Gundam fansites that have taken over the mantle from Gunota. :/ Thanks for the reply.

Reading an interview with Yoshiyuki Tomino over at ANN. My favourite quotes:

"regarding these children who have no training, how are they suddenly able to operate these huge complex pieces of equipment, whether they are robots or tanks or weaponry? It's because we had to come up with some kind of explanation."

The explanation is... because you had to come up with an explanation? [WTF smiley goes here]

"I would again like to stress that you must not compare Gundam to anything else. It is not simply a robot story. It is not simply an anime..." (anime ja nai!) "...It is much deeper and much more valuable than that. Despite the modest tone I've taken until now, it is pretty awesome."

"I have been fortunate enough to have lived a very long life. I am now old enough to be able to say I feel free to be able to use any means of expression available to me. I want to be able to express all these ideas I feel very strongly about. I'm not ashamed or embarrassed to use any tools at my disposal. I am eager and very full of ambition wanting to use the robot anime genre, and even cute characters. I want to use all these things that are available in this field to tell the kinds of stories that I want. I am full of ambition. This is the Tomino you see before you today."

Go, go Tomino-san! He actually talks a lot of sense about society in the middle somewhere as well. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.

Tomino's press release did shed a lot of light on his methods, especially the differences between himself and his contemporary, Miyazaki. The principle of not 'hiding' anything from one's audiences -including young ones- explains a lot about the former director's notoriety, and possible his fame as well.

*Revives Thread Frankenstein Style*

Thought it would be a good idea to bring this back to page one since there's been a lot of gundam talk going on, far better to talk here then clog up the thread focusing on the first 7 mins of unicorn.

Ahh, it is revived. Hoorah!

After watching Unicorn and adoring it, i've moved onto Zeta Gundam now. I'm only 11 episodes into it so far, but i do find it quite enjoyable. Kamille is an interesting lead, he's willing to fight, but seems wary when it comes to actually killing. How he changes whilst being a mobile suit pilot will be one to watch as well, will he eventually change, or will something else happen. Of course, there was no real need to guess as to who Quattro is either.

With regards to Quattro:

I wish we could get the other shows over here though, ZZ, Victory and Turn A Gundam mainly, although if Beez did it right i would get a G Gundam boxset, i would even blindly buy Gundam X since i know it can't be the worst gundam show ever made.

Is it too much to ask for as well that we get more of the manga as well? I would love to re-read Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Astray Destiny, and of course the Crossbone Gundam manga.

lol at the comic :)

Zeta is very good and it definetly get's better and more fleshed out as it progresses, I'd love to see a release of ZZ just so we have the majority of back story set out for the films and the Unicorn series.

So then Blackwolf why the aversion to SEED??

Woop =3 I'm just getting in to Gundam to be honest, I've only fully seen Gundam 00, made a few eps into SEED and Wing (liked wing, SEED not really so far) and am currently watching the old school Gundam, which I am enjoying more than I expected =)

Where to start...Okay. First up the storyline, I knew from reading online and from the gundamoffical forums as the show was airing in the States that it was a re-imagining of the original series. What with the boy finding gundam scenario, aided by the destruction of the colony, then the legged ship (trojan horse in the original series). Of course the big changes was the fact there was now more then one gundam, something which all series G onward have had (Turn A is the exception but i think Tomino was able to stop people wanting it full of gundams, he never did care too much for the toy side of things afterall), the storyline between Kira and Athrun and the masked character being a genocidal manic.

Now I don't mind re-imaginings or remakes...as long as they are good and can prove their worth over the original. The only plot line that they did add that that i liked really was the whole rivalry between Kira and Athrun, which ended in one of the best fights of the whole series (including Destiny). My main problems would have to be they didn't do enough different and a lot of it was cliched (or at least i thought so) half the time i knew what was going to happen and when people were going to die. The whole Rau thing as well i just thought it was silly, his motivation for destroying eveything? because he was a clone wow that sure beats everyone else's motivations, I mean how can Char's stack up to that, or even Ulube from G Gundam?

Another thing is n-jammers, a very poor plot device, they seemed to be SEEDs answer to minkosy particles from the original series and the way of stopping nukes and long range combat and what have you. That would be find if it wasn't for the fact that they are then underminned by having N-Jammer cancellers, which only serves as another plot device (oh look we can use nukes again! we're going to nuke ZAFT while they use their Gigantic Space Weapon(c) on us). It would of been far better if they just took the minkosy particles wholly from the original series and just left it by that.

The characters didn't help matters either, Kira was just a big doormat who kept sprouting the same nonsense towards the end, is it so wrong to expect another Kamille or even Loran? You can see why he gained the nickname "Jesus" since he's managed to pull off some serious miracles thanks to plot holes (Really I'll buy the Astray explanation of Kira's survival from his fight with Athrun, that's far more likely then anything else)

Lacus...was just too...fantastical? I like my female leads strong for the first part of the show she just came off annoying and then in the latter half I didn't buy her at all as the leader of any sort of group. Also i know this isn't the show's fault but it always irked me that they had two voice actresses for the english dub of her, it couldn't of been that hard to just get one who could sing as well.

Flay, I already named her as one of my most annoying characters so i'm leaving it there.

Athrun, a likeable character, more likeable then the main star. He also had the best pairing on the show, shame the director didn't like it since it was sadly crushed in Destiny.

Cagali, a better female lead then Lacus....You know what i would of liked SEED a lot better if Athrun and Cagali were the stars and Kira and Lacus were supporting them.

with regards to the animation, I found the mix of CGI mech and traditional stuff to be jarring especially on some of the archangel shorts, and the character designs were not my cup of tea, but that's something this shares with S-cry-ed. Also i disliked the heavy use of flashbacks which grew more commonplace as the series got on (Yes i get it, Nicol and Tolle are dead, i don't need to be told a hundred times!)

Music wasn't too bad but wasn't anything to write home about in the wake of more recent efforts (like the first two Gundam 00 ops)

Now onto the most important aspect:

The mechanical designs

Strike was a nice design on its own, although the pack system did mess things up, seemed like from that point on all the backpacks could only get bigger.

The other four gundams to start off with had some nice aspects, Blitz mainly, Aegis looked a mess and for a transformable one, a poor effort compared to designs like Zeta and Wing Gundam.

Justice looked, to me at least, plain and bland the backpack (again far too big) didn't look right to me. Freedom on the other hand, I confess this is my favourite design from SEED and in face it ranks in my top 10 designs of all time, it looks nice with its wings spread out and the colour scheme suits it well. Sadly they had to turn it into Strike Freedom but oh well.

I think that wraps up my comments on SEED, I won't bore you with my critisms of SEED Destiny but i can sum them up for you: Flashbacks, Main Character Swapping, Finale, Co-ordinator favourtism and stupid pairing choices

Of course i should probably add this disclaimer to that little rant:
These are my opinions, i'm not saying they are fact, this is just what i believe.

EDIT: Maybe i should read through it next time to make sure that spoilers aren't in full view -_-

Wow :)

Honestly though I do see where you are coming from on all of it, however I still really love SEED (Destiny not as much due to as you state some dodgy plot mechanics and character choices, though I do love some of the nods to Zeta).

I love the mecha designs in SEED, I am a big fan of the Duel with its Assault Shroud upgrade and yes I think the Freedom is way up there with the best of the best for design, I also enjoyed Providence.

The animation I know exactly what you mean on the CGI blend with the Archangel, it was dodgy, but it's something I've seen used before and seem's to be getting more and more familiar in some anime.

Oh and yes Athrun is by far the best character in the series (Destiny could of been a whole lot better had they worked out what they wanted to do in advance with him).

Personally the only series (that I've seen) that really didn't agree with me was G-Gundam... I can't even really argue why other than it just felt wrong, I'd kill though to see an English dub of After War.

I was rooting for Yzak x Athrun too ;(

It's weird that I didn't actually hate Lacus at all. She was a very odd character but her unearthliness came off quite well. My favourite female character overall was probably Murrue (Cagalli seemed to swap personalities every few arcs whereas Murrue was pretty consistent and warm).

After all of the silliness in Destiny in general I prefer to think of that show as an alternate universe spin-off a la Tenchi Muyou/Pretty Sammy.

Actually, Gundam X is easily one of the least watchable in my opinion. You're right that it's not 'the worst gundam show ever made', but both of those were at least direct sequels to worthwhile series, and at least had some kind of sideshow value in how frequently rubbish they were. Gundam X is just a humming fridge of absolute tedium. Just about every aspect of it failed to register any kind of feeling at all, though I do at least remember that at least the characters being notably terrible.

But then it's Gundam. Terrible is plentiful.

Really? I've heard some good reviews for it, although they say its only good and not great.

Izekiel@ I loved G Gundam, it was my third Gundam show I watched, I knew there was a lot of hate for it, because it was so un-gundam like, and un-real robot like it was. Didn't lessen it for me, I actually thought it had strong characters and a decent enough plot for what it was. It certainly wasn't the worst thing ever. The designs were pretty outlandish across the board but i get the feeling that was the point. Although God Gundam is a nice piece of work, as was Master Gundam. Devil Gundam could of spent a few more months being worked on though.

Oh. My. God.

Ep 1 of Unicorn is *the business*.

If I didn't have to go to bed right now, I'd be rewatching it straight away. I'll probably get a chance to watch it again tonight and form some thoughts other than sitting there dribbling in a state of ecstasy. I feel like once I get past the "wow" factor of how beautiful it is, I might have one or two small problems with the pacing, but meh.
