Tetsuya Nakashima, director of "<a href="http://thirdwindowfilms.com/films/kamikaze-girls">Kamikaze Girls</a>" and the critically lauded film &ldquo;<a href="http://thirdwindowfilms.com/films/confessions">Confessions</a>&rdquo; is set to direct an anime adaptation of the manga "Attack of the Giants" (Shingeki no Kyojin).

This award-winning manga was originally serialised in Kodansha's Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine in 2009. The story begins with the human race on the brink of extinction brought on by a sudden attack from wave upon wave of man-eating giants. Mankind only survived because it sealed itself in a city with 50 metre-high walls. 100 years later and people live in peace until a new, even larger giant appears and threatens to destroy the wall.

According to Anime News Network there was a casting call on the official website for Itako City in Ibaraki Prefecture. They asked for 80 extras, "healthy male and female to play people fleeing in panic from 'giants' who suddenly appear in a peaceful shopping district."

The manga has been compared to Devilman and Eden: It&rsquo;s an Endless World! Strong stuff indeed! The film is expected to hit Japanese theatres in the second half of 2013.
