Super Robot Shows

Godhand
Okay first when i started watching anime, mecha anime in particular i was only intrested in shows like Gundam and then that splintered off into shows like Macross, Evangelion and Rahxephon (though on the last two i'm not sure whether or not they are super robot type shows when thinkign about it).

Though lately i've become more intrested in seeing what the Super Robot side of the genre has to offer, so what good shows (or movies/OVAs) are there to watch?

examples i've already seen is King of Braves GaoGaiGar (full series and i've seen the GaoGaiGar FINAL OVA) and i've got plans to watch the Mazinger line of shows. But these can't be the only ones so any suggestions would be greatly apperciated :)

I've never seen it, but that is the first show [and opening] that came into my head.

Aint seen many Super Robot shows, assuming super robot is what I think it is...

It aint an Anime, but is still very good and I would say up to Anime standard, Megas XLR. Very, very good and funny.

FMP is very much a real robot show.

But you know what's a Gundam that's totaly super Robot?
G Gundam.

You know i completely forgot about G Gundam when i made the inital post :p strange since i actually quite enjoyed it, I would of said FMP! was a real robot show as well, so far Overman looks pretty cool, thanks Jayme,

@Megagold5: Used to watch MegasXLR all the time while it was being broadcast on toonami, shame they never made any more but i guess you could of had too much of a good thing

Aim for the Top! GunBuster and Aim for the Top! 2 DieBuster...?
I dunno, Gunbuster is (albeit comedically) explained by the science lessons, and is there any difference between made-up scientific theories in Gunbuster and made up scientific theories in Gundam, for example? That said, Diebuster does have much more super-robot tendancies than Gunbuster.

I've always been a little sketchy on the Real/Super Robot details, but it seems to me that if the robots and their abilities are explained in something resembling a logical fashion then that's a real robot, and if no real explanation is given for how the robots work or their abilites then that's a super robot.

Staying on topic - Sorry Black, Mazinger's on my to watch list too but Mazinkaiser's all I've seen so far.

Awesome Engrish Mazinger op/ed to whet your appetite:

Are we talking giant robot like shows or just shows where the robots seem to have superpowers of some kind. Like where they can fly around like planes when you just know they can't carry enough fuel to do stuff like that.

the latter kind really, like the aforementioned Mazinger and its more recent Mazinkaiser OVA, Gunbuster looks promising though Ayase has confused as to if its super robot type or real robot type :p

Well if Gunbuster is a Real Robot, and if Uncyclopedia is reliable*, then "Any sufficiently advanced Real Robot is indistinguishable from a Super Robot" so the robots in Diebuster are still Real Robots, but so advanced they seem like Super robots.

There ya go. :p Gunbuster's worth watching either way like.

*yes, I do know.

Would Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagen be classed as a Super Robot anime? I'm assuming like. Very VERY good imo if you haven't already seen it Black! Kept me pinned all the way to the end. ^_^

Full Metal Panic comes to mind, though the robots in that aren't exactly 'super' (well, perhaps the Arbalest).
Anything that uses the Lambda Driver is a Super Robot, and since there are a handful in FMP that do, FMP is technically a super robot show. It's just not a traditional super robot show.

Actually...

Gainer isn't really a Super Robot Show... the whole genre is very retro. Think 'Gekigangar'. The closest I've seen is probably Ideon, but I never really enjoyed that.

Isn't GekiGangar getto robo?

As a sight tangent, one could watch the Nanoha Trillogy, it's very much a "What would happen if a super robot director did a magical girl series" series.

Well, the action is very Super Robot (even more so in Strikers if you catch my drift) but the underlying drama is very down to Earth.

Oh god, the English Mazinger Opening.
Riding from his little ply-bot, Koji can protect the PEASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

If you can find it, try GEKIGANGAR III. It's an over dramatic OVA taken from a TV show shown in Nadesico, really funny stuff.

Andddd... whilst I'm here, try Nadesico aswell.
