Suggestions - Good anime before 2000

Pokémon Master
I like old anime but not that old, between 90 and 99 is ok. Older than that just if is a must see. I feel more than ever that old anime has a different feeling from the one nowadays, which is obvious of course due to a lot of things. I do enjoy some of the nowadays anime but still, i cant find good stuff like i did between 2002 and 2009 maybe.

So regarding before 2000, I've seen, Akira, Gits, Ninja Scroll, GTO, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon Ball (obvious), Rurouni Kenshin, Evangelion, Golden Boy, Initial D first stage, Grave of the fireflies, Barefoot Gen 1 and 2, Jin-Roh, Perfect Blue,Spriggan and I'm currently watching Outlaw Star and i still have to see Berserk. Yes i know i should have already seen this one.

So can anyone give me good classic names to watch please? (before 2000)

any Studio Ghibli stuff from before 2000 will probly be ok some of my stuff has already been list but some has not ;P

I highly recommend El Hazard - The Magnificent World. An example of a "travel-to-another-world-fantasy" done right, with a proper romance at its core, lots of comedy and one of the most ridiculously satisfying endings ever. Ignore El-Hazard 2 and Alternative World though, they can't live up to it. There's a retelling called The Wanderers which is pretty good though.

DNA^2 is a lot of fun as well, it was popular enough to inspire the infamous SimGirls flash game on Newgrounds ;) Video Girl Ai from the same author is one of the best romances out there as well.

For a proper Sci-Fi/Space Opera, go for Crest of the Stars and its follow up Banner of the Stars. Great atmosphere, some wonderful dialogue and a terrific central pair of protagonists.

I can't recommend Now and Then, Here and There enough as well, it's one of the most harrowing shows I've ever watched, but I'm so glad I watched it. The main character's relentless determination got me through it.

Martian Successor Nadesico for sure, it's easily one of my favourites. The way it switches from comedy to drama is excellent and it has some really interesting things to say. GEKIGAN FLARE!!!!!! Ignore the movie though.

Finally, any of the old MangaUK stuff will usually be worth a watch for the dub alone. I'm talking Angel Cop, Mad Bull 34, AD Police files etc. Angel Cop even manages to quote Ian Hislop! (If that's justice then I'm a banana), you won't get that in dubs nowadays ;)

Wow a lof of sugestions! Thanks!!

Yeah i forgot to mention that i would prefer action/violence/sci-fi but its ok. I know the name of a lot of them but never got around to see them. Tonight i will see all of your sugestions and see what are the ones that might interest me.

If anyone thinks that that great title has not been mentioned yet, just feel free to share with us.

By the way, this thread could almost work out as an important thread for anime before 2000 I guess.

Most of the OOP anime is Pre Millenia. Not strictly but mostly. I was just thinking that (with a bit of a bend of the rules as it were) that info contained in one can answer questions in the other. Just a thought though.

Some lesser known, though no less brilliant titles for your consideration:

Photon: The Idiot Adventures
Dog Warriors: The Hakkenden
The Wanderers: El Hazard
Gokudo
Phantom Quest Corporation
Tsukikage Ran

@Yakumo

Thanks for those names.

I only heard about Hakkenden and Tsukikage Ran and as a samurai fan, i should have watched those two long time ago. I'll try them soon. Thanks

I've started Roujin Z the other day but I've stopped in the middle cause I was falling asleep. I still have around 20/30 minutes to watch but I dont feel like it.

Im planning to watch in the next days Riding Bean. I've seen some trailers and it seems ok.

I've seen Black Magic M66 and it was fun.

Love riding bean, but its only short. I found Roujin Z a little dull tbh.

I think all the titles I am gonna suggest are pre 2000 but sure somebody will be kind enough to point out if not

Knowing you like action & violence
Devil Man
Demon City Shinjuku
Ninja Scroll
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
Samurai X (although I can't remember it much, I seem to remember really liking it)
Street Fighter II: the Movie (might wanna wait for the Blu-ray release coming soon)
Battle Angel Lita
Goku Midnight Eye
Spriggan
Akira
AD Police
Cyber City Oedo 808
Angel Cop
Red Hawk
Berserk (Series)

Not sure i liked these but
Armitage III: Poly Matrix
Armitage Dual Matrix
Doomed Megalopolis
Black Lion
Pet Shop of Horrors

Others (not violent as far as I can remember):
Patlabor 1&2
Vampire Princess Miyu OVA (could be violent, I can't remember)
Mega zone 23
8 Man After
Black Jack OVA
Venus Wars
Darkeside Blues
City Hunter (I only like The Motion Picture but there are others and a series)

I've seen a few from that list and I already have a big list to see at the momen but Im gonna check some of those titles and add them to the list if I like them from what im gonna see through trailers.

Let me know what you think, when you watch them.

From your list I've watched Akira, Spriggan,Samurai X and Ninja scroll. Not much but I want to watch some in the over the next weeks.

Just saw Bio Hunter. A bit too much of monsters but it was ok overall.

My preferences are more like "real" things with action and blood.
