The trailer for a new anime series called '<em><strong>First-Squad</strong></em>' was recently published online, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_90iFLjdqQ">via YouTube</a>. What is interesting about this particular production is that, despite being animated at the acclaimed <em>Studio 4C</em> (Tekkonkinkreet, Batman: Gotham Knight, Animatrix), it is actually being financed by a Russian / Canadian company called <em>Molot Entertainment</em>. The story is set in the old Soviet Union during the Second World War, with a group of "Soviet teenagers" having to fight off the invading hordes of Nazi Germany. I'm also intrigued. It does look very exciting! It's nice to see that anime is becoming so popular that companies in other countries are commissioning it :]

This looks SERIOUSLY incredible. I wonder when it will be out on DVD, and surely as it's a part Canadian production it will have English subtitles/dub maybe, and maybe even a French dub/sub, along with the Russian dub/sub. Very exciting.

I also wonder what language the lip-sync is doen to, whatever it is that's the language I'll be watching it in.

The way Paul described it... I expected more, it looks alright, the music was pretty cool though. Might look into it. Might be surprised.

Pauls description made me think it was a realistic approach in a similar vein to that of Grave of the Fireflies or Barefoot Gen and my interest peaked but after watching that it looks more like another fantasy action show. Interest lowered.

Ditto. If this was a realistic depiction of war in animated form (like GotF) then I'd be very interested, but it looks like a standard action flick with nothing special going for it.

It'd be nice if more anime films didn't try to cram 20 volumes into 2 hours and, instead of making everything over-complicated with little to no explanations, kept it simple. I'd like to see more realistic anime fioms/series like GotF.

:? You really thought they could somehow make that realistic?

Yes. Just because they try to fight off an invading army doesn't mean they should be successful. A story about a group of teengers who fight for their freedom despite it being ultimately futile. Now I'd be interested in that.

Ah, fair enough.
Personally. I saw a synopsis about an anime [italics for importance  ] with the words; "teenager" "fight" "horde" and "nazi", and thought, "So they find a giant robot or something then?"

If you guys are looking for serious WWII-era anime, I'd suggest taking a look at the trailer for The Sky Crawlers, which is precisely a bunch of teenagers fighting off 'invaders' in a very realistic, WWII-era style.

Sky Crawlers does look very good. Been looking forward to it.
Though i hope it still has some nice steampunk stuff in it, despite being realistic :)
