Already been done, in the form of a game: Operation Darkness.

But I'll probably end up watching Sky Crawlers in favour of this.

Agreed...

Even though this looks different and a nice change of theme and environment, it's basically a WW2 anime with teenagers kicking ass unlike any other anime.

I would be very intrigued and very interested if there is a anime based on Anne Frank and her Diary. That would be a very interesting approach to WW2 imo
 
It definitely looks like my kind of thing from the trailer and description. Studio 4Cs involvement and the inclusion of nazi zombies sounds promising. The whole Russian/Canadian financing is unexpected though, I'm curious about their motivations.

Anyway, I'll eagerly look forward to it :)
