SD, HD, BR?

You could put an entire SD series on one BD, but then where is the gain? And you can get very pretty pretty BD menus BUT the moment they use Java you've lost the resume function. Any BD with a Java based menu resumes from the start next time you power the player on.

Ahh....fair enough WRT the java menu's.

An entire series in BR on a BR disc would also work, even with the upscaling to 1080p would still have space to have menu's and things. and instead of having 3 discs to a series you can have a full series on 1 disc. therefore utilising more space in your collection. I've recently had a tidy round in my storage and have learnt that since i've made extra space.....its still not enough because thats now filled with more anime.

Its common knowledge that anime is a expensive hobby to have, the shadow to that could be said that its also a very space consuming hobby.

See melonpan's post about quality. Cramming a series into 1 BD will not give you better quality over DVDs.

Eva came on 7 dual layer discs, thats 63GB. Ghost Hunt comes on 4 dual layer discs, thats 36GB. And the difference is noticable.

A BD is 50GB. You won't get Eva in SD form into that without either chopping all the extras (which is a bad thing) or cutting the quality (also bad).

Sure its a pain having 7 full size DVD cases on the shelf, but then you buy more shelves :) Or wait for thinpacks. (and the shelves cost less than buying Eva at £15/disc  )

I think smaller series would work. there's no reason why they couldn't split that 63gig into 2 BR dvds with 31 and 32gig. It won't be too bad that way. thats 7 full dvd cases blocked down to 2 BR disc cases (which are smaller ofcorse) and you have that extra 5 dvd spaces :)

Funimation currently split 26 episodes over 3 discs over 2 bd cases - see Burst Angel, Basilisk & Samurai Champloo (some of the dvd extras are missing from these releases such as the radio dramas from Burst Angel)

Yeah, but they'd still be in standard definition... so in a way what's the point? Would anyone re-buy at the same quality, just to have less discs? Unlikely. And bringing out standard definition on Blu-ray... can you imagine how confusing that could get for the average consumer?

Customer: "Excuse me, this is on Blu-ray, so it's high definition, right?"
Assistant: "No, that's the series on two BDs at standard definition, the same quality as the set of six DVDs. This is the series on six BDs at high definition"
::Customer's head explodes::

Most generous assessment of anything happening, ever. :p

The moon exploding is "unlikely". People rebuying series on BD just to save space is some kind of negative possibility.

I'm not sure the BDA will even allow SD features to be released on Blu-ray. Extras can be, but I don't think they want any main features to be SD.

Certain boxsets amongst my collection fit six discs into the shelf space of two standard DVD cases. Shelf space is an issue of packaging rather than the actual number of discs in my opinion.

Absolutely. There's plenty of space saving packaging and I do dislike when each disc gets its own full size case. Tsubasa Season 1 fits 6 discs in a single standard size case, never mind two.

Now thats a fair point. if they revamp the packaging. They could have boxsets cut down tremendously. don't get me wrong, i enjoy boxsets because overall their cheaper than buying each vol with 4 eps on it at £10 a pop....FMA cost me over £100 easily simply by buying it disc by disc.

Having the set up like BBB has. 3 discs in 1 case would make a 6 disc boxset like the cowboy bebop remix which was released in october. could be smaller. a 2 dvds with a sleeve like they have for Naruto would make so much more space on shelves.
Yeah there's always the "just put up another shelf" but i can't....in my room there's just no space, So trying to utilize all possible space is the only option left. Surely the companies know that anime is a large area consuming hobby, then if they thought about it they could make it easier for us all by producing it in a different way.

Vintage animation can look pretty stunning on Blu-ray (have the 3x Disney films that have made it so far, two of which are the very oldest), but I'm only ever going to be after the odd specifically HD animated series and the feature films on what is ultimately an enthusiast's media.

As an aside, doesn't anyone else wish that now the format war is over, they would rename 'Blu-Ray' to 'HD DVD'? I still think the name sucks :p

I just wish stores wouldn't confuse things by calling it "Blu-ray DVD".

I wish they'd change the case colour from kiddie-appealing blue to a nice stylish black or charcoal grey.

Just start calling it BD. Sounds a bit like VD, which is slightly unsettling, but it saves a few milliseconds typing.

And how much $$ and time do Disney spend on the transfers? Somewhere I have a link to how they did the Sleeping beauty transfer. It was actually shot on B&W film, each frame shot 3 times through different filters to get the colour effect.

I hated the 'HD DVD' name, it sounds so much more low-tech, & more like a DVD but with an HD video on it than a new type of disc altogether, which is what Blu-Ray is.

As for abbreviations, I imagine Blu-Ray will only be commonly abbreviated to 'BD' in the context of 'BD-ROM', because 'Blu-Ray ROM' doesn't sound right. In normal use it'll stay as Blu-Ray when spoken because you cannot shorten the number of syllables any further, though people may type BD rather than Blu-Ray because people of the internet are lazy typists.

BD = Blu-ray Disc just as DVD = Digital Versatile Disc (no capital R on 'ray'). I don't see any difference really.

Isn't Blu-ray DVD technically correct, though? It's a digital disc that's versatile.
People could start calling it "those little round things that play movies on my high def telly", which would also be "correct". Still wouldn't be what they're actually called, however. "Blu-ray" and "DVD" are stand-alone nouns, really, not simply adjectives.

Over and above that semi-facetious argument, "Blu-ray DVD" is needlessly confusing. You can only imagine how many people will have bought a film under that heading, and expected it to play in their regular DVD player.
