Scotland Loves Anime 2025

I would rate this year as a C+, ultimately placing the Lupin OVAs the wrong way around was not great. The Last Blossom was the only "must buy on home release". I wonder if All You Need is Kill is hurt by presenting itself visually as dynamic and exciting but its lead protagonist is quite self-reliant and closed off. It means out 'in' to both the universe and plot can feel a little cold and pessimistic which isn't a common pairing for the visual presentation. Once Rita starts working with Keiji it feels the like the feel actually starts moving and this is quite far into the film.

I really enjoyed JUNK WORLD and with its switch up to add dialog and even more humour it was a fun ride but it lost something along the way compared to JUNKHEAD. I really hope this team move onto something new next.

Yeah I'm definitely in agreement re the ordering of the showings with the Lupin OVAs at Edinbrugh. One of the big reasons I didn't write about it in the article is that the OVAs and new film were my first time watching Lupin in general, and I think I came away with a worse impression of the newer film just because of not having had the opportunity to watch those OVAs first.

I appreciate that they wouldn't have wanted to show the new film late on the Sunday since you're potentially losing a lot of ticket sales, but it would have been helpful if the OVAs were on the Friday evening or sandwiched in somewhere on Saturday instead. Although there were so many problems with scheduling this year in general that it's hard to complain when they had to rework so much. 😓

Personally I think they were hampered by the curated weekday programming, leaving them no wriggle room for scheduling the other films. I really liked what they did last year for showing Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture, splitting the episodes across 2 nights. I think they could have done the same with Lupin here, say, showing OVAs 1 & 2 on the Wednesday then 3 & 4 on the Thursday. I would have preferred that myself as other than Project A-Ko, the curated films weren't great (Golgo 13 is one of the worst anime I have ever seen). I think if they try a curated block again, I think they need to place more restrictions on the curator.

To be fair on the SLA crew, I'd largely blame the Picturehouse for this, as I think they were trying to plug in their usual programming around the festival (there were a number of films in Screen 1 before the SLA films) and it not working very well.

They're doing a sequel to Junk Head to finish off the story. They are really good stop motion animators though so I would be up for anything they decide to do after that!

Do we think its back to the Filmhouse next year?

I'd say it's unlikely. Being at the special Chao screening, I prefer the Filmhouse to the Cameo as they've done a great job with the refurb, but the screen has lost a lot of seats, and when it's bums on seats that the organisers are looking for, it doesn't make financial sense to make a permanent move back there. I think you could do the one off or have overflow screenings there, but I think all the main films will continue to be shown at The Cameo.

The "Robots in London" Strand (working title) was also by Kambole Campbell, which was better - although any festival strand showing Promare will get my approval.

I really liked this year's festival - I didn't have much of an opinion either way going in to it but I thought the competition films were stronger than last year and much stronger than 2023. 100 Meters was my favourite, and I can't wait to rewatch it when it comes on Netflix. I wasn't expecting much from The Last Blossom but thought it was also fantastic. ChaO and All You Need is Kill were good too but not my favourite things ever. As for the out-of-competition stuff, Labyrinth was insane, Redline was less good.

I would like to see more done at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh but yeah, I doubt it will happen but it'll be interesting to see nevertheless. It was a shame that Angel's Egg couldn't have been slotted in some time at the weekend in Glasgow - the 11am starts are maybe more of an east coast thing (not that I can imagine it's an 11am type of film ) :D

I’ve appreciated the curated blocks as a chance for older films which would be unlikely to come up otherwise to get an airing, but my objection is purely practical - I can’t afford (both time wise and monetarily) to repeatedly travel to Edinburgh for one film each night. If we could have had two or three on one day, I’d have gone to more of them.

Or, y’know, show ‘em in Glasgow…

Post covid I think my train and hotel costs for SLA have basically doubled. It really shouldn't be £500 to get to and sleep in a city in my own country for between 2-4 days.

It's pretty ridiculous in Edinburgh at this point. I think I costed out that three days in London (including BA flights) were cheaper than trains to Edinburgh and an equivalent hotel. Plus the additional cinema costs over Glasgow, I like the Cameo but not £12 a ticket like.

It's funny that my annual Cineworld membership is almost the same as the Picturehouse Membership (which I gte to use the 10 free tickets at SLA because its cheaper, even though my nearest PH is over an hour away) and they part of the same group. I've seen 66 films at the cinema this year, 9 being at SLA.

The membership is a good strategy, the Cameo would be my nearest picturehouse - not that it is particularly close at over three hours away lol. They do have good deals on memberships but nothing really beats unlimited. £12.99 a month and 35 films with unlimited this year, I've been slacking.

You've beaten the 3 a month films needed to 'justify' it and ultimately you have to value your time. I don't go see films for the sake of it with Unlimited. My friends were very surprised during my biggest year when I hit 95 that I didn't 'go for the 100' but that beats the point because I'd be seeing films that would have held zero interest. The other thing I love with Unlimited is you can see something more than once if you really love it which would feel bad if you paid per ticket.

I'm hoping SLA clarify the future of Edinburgh fairly early, a worst of both worlds would be splitting screenings across the Cameo and the Filmhouse. Shuffling between cinemas would be a pain and losing the membership option would also suck!

The Cineworld prices here in Dublin are so high that you break even with one film and buying popcorn, €18 a month for Unlimited or €14-16 per standard screening. Popcorn and a drink is €12, less 25%(€3) for the unlimited card.

Group 1 cinema kings rise up!
Unfortunately that doesn't apply for the Dublin cinema, it's €18 for Unlimited here and they only have 1 cinema in the country and it's a rundown pos. It was in the middle of getting renovated before Covid and was never finished with only 4 screens completed and the biggest non Imax screen left unfinished and closed since then.

At least you can use the Unlimited card from here in any UK Cineworld without having to worry about that group stuff as I was able to use it at the Birmingham NEC location without issue, which is a group 3 location.

It's been a bad year for me and Cineworld, I have been cheating on it quite often because they don't show Anime Limited releases anymore! I'm trying to go for 80 films this in the cinema this year but I'm only at 66 so it's looking unlikely. Although, with the Vue shutting down here next month there'll be less (read: no) competition for my cinema-goings next year. I do sometimes go for the sake of it, it's good to get out and watch more stuff and I like to double up on films when I go to the cinema - saves time getting to the cinema and back.

Filmhouse have a membership that is broadly equivalent to the Picturehouse one (and slightly cheaper), but obviously it can't be used anywhere else other than the Filmhouse.

Of the 3 non-SLA anime I've seen at the cinema this year I had to cheat twice. The Colors Within I had to drive an hour to Leeds Showcase, COLORFUL STAGE! The Movie: A Miku Who Can't Sing was at my local Odeon and Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze Arc was at CW (but in 4DX and it was a nightmare!). We didn't even get The Boy and the Heron in 2023 between CW, Odeon and Vue. It's a real nightmare for anime fans in Hull, guess there aren't many of us!

I don't like our local Cineworld anyway as when you get past the foyer it's run down and the screens are really bad. The screenings at Vue are good, and the smaller screens are perfectly sized for most anime screenings. Odeon is fine, but I find the screens to be a tad small for the room so you get that viewing a TV from the opposite end of the dining room effect.
