Well... I have to say Ayato would whip Shinji pretty easy...
RahXaphon can fly, it doesn't run out of ammo (though apparently an anime rule is guns dont run outta ammo :? ) and... well, it doesn't need a weapon in the 1st place.

So Ayato wins for me...
 
Ayato is definitely the most likeable, there's no question there. however, Shinji is the much more memorable character and says more about human nature so my vote is on the whiney git this time.

of course NOTHING can stand in the way of unit 01 in berserk mode...
