Installing windows to it is just a waste. Why buy the overpriced machine to install windows to it instead?
Agree. I just mentioned that if I wanted, I could, not that I'm willing or would do it.

As for cost on maintenance, i've not had to pay for any maintenance on my PC. It depends on the user. Changes person to person.
For cost of maintenance I consider the time I spent troubleshooting windows. XP after sp2 got decent enough and I've seen less reformatting going on after it. But, I was already on Linux when it got out. Even now, I'd say I've spent two or three days troubleshooting issues on windows if I sum up everything on the last two years at my current job.

Macs will only ever be a machine for graphics.
Sound editing as well. Windows came a long way, and it's pretty decent now, but I don't know if they are there yet. Until a few years ago, Macs were popular at studios.

Besides the internet, the thing I use the most on my computer are development tools such as eclipse, svn, xcode, etc.

I sense neither of us will back down here though. Out of interest, could you tell me more about Linux? Im thinking of dual booting with Linux myself.
Not a matter of backing down. Like I mentioned earlier, the best machine is the one that suits your needs.

Then again, linux is great server side. Not sure how good it is on a desktop. I use it for a long time now, but I hardly ever use it on graphic mode.

Man what i'm saying is; you're gonna defend Macs, because that's what suits you. I'm gonna defend Windows cause they suit me. Neither of us are gonna change our opinions on what suits us best, are we?

I've heard Linux is a good desktop btw... How were your experiences?

Er, what can't my Mac do that your Windows PC can? The only difference that matters is pretty much games. Most of which, other than the cutting edge ones, can be run in Crossover (Wine) without having to install Windows at all. That's how I played through Portal a while back ;p

It's awfully unfair to act like one is better than the other just because of what effectively boils down to a few games, when I prefer to do my gaming on my PS3/DS/PSP anyway! We don't all have the same priorities and my Mac doesn't stress me out and waste my time like a Windows PC (I use them 40 hours a week and have been with them since Windows 3.1, so it's not like this is a completely blind opinion).

Just because a Mac is known as a good platform for high end graphics work doesn't mean that's all they can do. This is a solid Unix-based operating system on solid components. It's not a toy or a Photoshop-dedicated workstation.

By the way, I don't care what people choose to use - my house contains Windows PCs, Macs and a Debian box. I will only use the Macs, but that's out of considered choice and not for a second have I ever felt limited or cheated by this decision. OSX perfectly suits my needs (which are to get things done with as little tinkering as possible, most of the time, and when I do want to seriously tinker I have a nice clean terminal to hand which is far better suited to me than some of the alternatives).

Sorry, I was going to sit this out but loaded statements like that really get my attention...;)

I happily used cent OS , red hat and gemtoo for a while. All of them were good. If you think about editing schoolwork on it, I recommend you to install open office and see what you think of it. For me it was great as all I ever needed were development tools.

Actually, this was a bet between me and Spyro to see when you would jump in this thread ;)

I have Ubuntu on my netbook and love it. Easy to install, easy to use. Not memory hogging bloatware. Ubuntu>>>Windows. The only thing stopping my from switching my main Laptop over is that I love my games too much and have a lot of stuff stored on my now NTFS formatted external HDD. Really I suppose it's just too much bother. Maybe next time I need a new computer. ;)

When on linux I used Wine to play games. No idea how good / bad that is now though.

The NTFS is mountable on Linux. As long as you can find a driver for it, you're able to use it with linux as well.

So would you all say Ubuntu is a good OS to use? I'm thinking of putting it on my second hard drive in a week or so.
Go for it. Ubuntu is a solid OS and it have a history of fast development and good user support., which is something most linux distros lack.

I understand that Photoshop CS4 etc. aren't compatible so my gaming and art will need to stick to XP, but whats it like for my music? Can I use a nice looking version of Messenger on it? I understand Firefox is the browser too :)

check gimp on linux, blender for animations, music I 've heard good things about audacity.

you won't use messenger per se, but you can use trillian or some other IM "Aggregator". one nice thing about these aggregators is the possibility to login to multiple accounts at the same time.

I don't use GIMP  I hate the program.

Have you used these Messenger programs before? I just don't want something horribly ugly like the default Windows Messenger *Shudder*

I've used trillian for a very long time. the only thing msn had trillian didn't back then was those games - It had skins, so you could choose the one you like. It has a windows version as well, so you can check it out anyway.

GIMP on linux is worth a look at least. It looks much better under X than it does on windows, the windows version sued to be always behind the linux one as well.

Also i'm looking around on youtube/wikipedia at various bits, is it hard to set up these nice Desktop environments? I noticed some guy had a cube desktop, water falling on the screen and windows burn when closed.

There is a desktop manager that does unimaginable things .
I think it's called matisse. There is a tutorial of it on youtube, I'll check it out once I'm home. search for it.

One of these things were cutting a window on a random program, so you can peek the window behind it.

From the demo, it actually looked even better than Mac OS.

Go for it. Just make a 10gb or so logical partition to test ubuntu out on, if you don't like it you could just delete the partition.

Ubuntu is ultra fast, and there are some really awesome features like how you can have two desktops. It's just annoying to me that loads of programs don't work in it and I have to dual boot up vista or whatever if I need one of them. Also, I had to type in this huge command in the terminal just to get my modem to connect to the internet. If it wasn't for that I'd use it. It has some really awesome effects, too.

Through general browsing i've noticed connecting to the internet to be a huge problem for quite a few people who are on a Wireless network

I'm not trailing an ethernet cable from my bedroom, downstairs and through the living room just for Ubuntu either
