Review of Buso Renkin #1

The series is very close to the manga and the manga got cancelled in JP. The author had to resort to another publication to finish it and on top of that, he admittedly finished it in a hurry.

With these details you can pass a judgement if you want to watch it or not. I've seen that anyway and enjoyed. While the mains characters were particularly plain, Papillon was an extremely enjoyable villain =)

I would not rate the show as low as Sy did, but I wouldn't rate the show more than average. Maybe a 6.

Dave, I may not like shonen titles generally but as I also said in the review I can also see the appeal that they have. Other shonen titles however have something that this one does not, they have something that makes them stand out as something unique, perhaps that playful energy and distinctive look of One Piece or just a great atmosphere and design like Bleach.

For me this series was lazy, the background characters seemed like a bunch of props, the villains were confused as to if they were meant to pose a threat or not and everything else looked like it was borrowed. It's forgettable. The connection to Bleach was to highlight just how unoriginal it seemed.

Also Dave, don't take reviews so seriously, it's just my opinion and I'm not forcing people to agree with it. Though I still think it's bull that you need that length of a series to 'build up' to an epic climax.

A good review should not just mirror your own view but the enjoyment for the people it intend for and would like to buy the title in question. No form of entertainment is universally liked by anyone, there people who don't like films like Shawshank Redemption which is considered classic.

It their choice to have that view, but the point of the review is to give fair reflection of content for it intend audience. With the review 3 out 10 its not giving a fair reflection for it buy public a score suggest 6-7 out 10 probably close to the mark.

I was deeply disappointed with Cowboy Bebop TV Series for example but not going create a bad review for it as I know people would like this show and my opinion is in minority.

There are so many fighting shonen it near impossible to not notice similarities. Just today noticed while reading Rurouni Kenshin how quite similar personality wise Sagara Sanosuke was to Zoro in One Piece for example.

Bleach is not that inherently more original than Buso Renkin very far from it. Bleach to start with at least is very similar to Yu Yu Hakusho it does not affect people enjoyment these 2 shows.

Series length does not matter in other types of anime, but shonen fighting anime length is incredibly important. The way shonen are done they need more time to bulid. If you consider the best shonen fighting animes they always are long affair, imagine something like one piece or bleach cut down to 26 episode. They would be nowhere near as good, they need the time to nurture. Buso Renkin with 26 Episode it never going to be in their league.

One Piece would be even better if it didn't have all the long, and I mean long moving pictures and scans of faces, ships and scenery. There is a reason a lot of that is pure fluff and not in the manga. It doesn't add anything to anything, and honestly, as pretty as some of it looks, the music is what carries scenes like that. One Piece comes with a lot of baggage which over time, you fall for, and it becomes hard to be objective about it.

Bleach was good around episode 50. It jumped the shark there, seriously.

Why the hell not? I know this is going to sound like a broken record, but this is the internet. Why not voice your opinion? We aren't [m]ad men, we don't need to sell anything. I know I'd be more than happy to see why someone didn't like Bebop.

Go to ANN, their reviews are still heavily based upon personal preferences. One writer might like the moé in snow aspects of Kanon, whilst others might puke at the idea of watching girls with big eyes and rather watch Berserk.

I wonder if this argument would have even started if Sy gave Buso Renkin a 10/10.

Dave, I wrote a review of what I thought was a badly executed TV series in largely all respects and I'll rate the series as I see fit. Thank you.

Reviews are about opinion, positive or negative. If you want a review to lack all of that, and just be positive and optimistic about a show without having personal opinion come into it, then you might as well sack all the reviewers and just print the blurb on the back of the DVD case.

I liked Buso Renkin, but I think any reviewer would be amiss in not pointing out its plentiful deficiencies. It's cliched and derivative as hell, characterisation sucks, and there are plenty of decent alternative options out there, Bleach, Full Metal Alchemist, and Shakugan no Shana, all of which it gleefully pilfers from for ideas.
