Resident Evil 4 - Really That Great?

One thing that has puzzled me is the fact that everyone seems to be making ridiculous claims about Resident Evil 4 being "the best resi ever" etc - For me it was ok but it didnt have that edge to it that most of the others did.
Just to make myself clear I am not one of those people who thought it was crap because of there being different enemies, as the idea behind the enemies was really inventive and similar to the Caliban Cove story in the resident evil novel series.
For me it wasn't a horror game...it was an action game - Also there were little bits missing such as the lack of puzzles seen in the earlier games and those moments that make you jump and think "oh ****!" and it just wasn't scary in any shape or form (especially Salazar who was like a zombified Richie Rich)

(Albert Wesker naked is a much more scary thought than this whole game but mind you what beats that? )

I think the camera angle just annoyed me and it was far too "WOW I JUST JUMPED THROUGH 3 WINDOWS AND KILLED 10 GANADOS BUT LOOK AT MY HAIR!" - Visuals were superb though and the game did have its moments but overall I was disappointed - It just didn't feel like a resi game to me

I wonder what everyone elses thoughts on this are? because none of my friends are big resi fans so I hope that its only the magazines who thinks its such a great revelation

In my opinion, I think that my favourite was the REmake on Gamecube and I also think that the original version of Resi 4 would have been far more entertaining! Oh and by resi games I mean real resi games (no survivor rubbish but i havent played the PS2 ones)
 
I thought it was pretty good first one i ever played reminded me some what of devil may cry.

I'll take it you were a fan of the whole your alone you have to watch you ammo sorta thing.
Resident evil was instead of survival horror it's action horror.

This time you aren't alone and you can fight back with a variety of weapons which takes away the main fear factor.
Action and horror don't work since you feel safe no matter what pops up.
 
Yeah I am a fan of the whole "oh crap, theres zombies down that way and there maybe a couple of hunters down that way but all I have is 3 handgun bullets" - for me the action took away what horror elements were in the game - great game if it were something new, but not a resident evil game
 
Resident Evil 4 is a good game i'll give it that, but if you where looking for a survival horror, this isn't it. Its fun, and its definitely worth a go, but its not going to give you a scare like the original ones could have/would have. There was no eerie atmosphere that the originals had and where good for. I guess for those that are looking for good points compared to the old games, there is no door opening animations at least :p. RE5 will be similar if we can go by the screens we have seen now, but it may bring back some of the horror aspects, we just have to wait and see, still early days for that. UC should be good though.

I like the game in general...just not the setting.

European villages and...fields (?) just does nothing for me. I prefer cities and RE1-style settings.

Still a good game...but nowhere near as good as it's hyped to be.
 
Resi 4 is my favourite Resi game, on the Wii that is, the controller fits it perfectly. I can't imagine playing it on the PS2 or whatever. I hope the PS3 gets something sorted for Resi 5, I wanna have a wii mote for it ;) but sadly thats gonna be impossible.

The PS2 is definately different to the Wii in controlling it but if you have the Chainsaw controller which uses the same technology as the Wii its not so bad
 
I haven't played the Wii version since I have the original (exclusive for about 4 months) Gamecube version - so if the controls are done well I guess it could be even better - I'm from the school of it's a great game but if you are a fan of the style of play that Resi was known for, do not play this game. Unfortunately, I was expecting a traditional resi game or something close to it. I probably won't get Resident Evil 5 because it looks like Resi 4 but in Africa. But I will be keeping a close eye on it as it'll be interesting to see how it turns out - I think this time around I will be getting either Silent Hill 5 (if its on 360) or Alone In The Dark - but Umbrella Chronicles looks good to me as well but I'll see how that turns out as well

i think resident evil 2 was the best one...i thought it was rather scary!(well i'm a wuss)
especially on the 2nd time round when tyrant would burst through the walls!
 
Resident Evil 2 was probably my second favourite! I must've been about 8 or 9 when me and my brother first saw the tyrant burst through the wall! Man that scared the crap out of us!!
 
Resi 4 doesn't scare me the least bit, although the dogs did make me jump occanionally :) but its sooooo much better on the wii, when you jump or just get plain scared, trying to wii mote makes it that much more fun. You need a steady hand, but on the ps2 you can do whatever and still move your gun accuratly if you know what I mean

it's even harder if you shoot the lights out which makes it even scarier!

What kind of game is Umbrella Chronicles by the way? I haven't seen a lot of stuff about it. It isn't like the hideous Gun Survivor games is it?
 
Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, is somewhat like a lightgun game, but its got differences. Its based on The rise and fall of Umbrella told through Wesker, and includes campaigns from RE0, 1 and 3 and new scenarios, one which is in Antartica with Chris and Jill. There is several other scenarios including one for Ada, one for wesker, one for hunk and a new one with Rebecca and Richard Aiken(in the mansion). It should be good, and it should unravel what actually happens to the likes of Rebecca after the events of Racoon city. Just have to wait till the 30th =/

Its not all resident evil games, for starters you don't get to control Claire or Leon, since RE2 isn't really included, but the Claire A Leon B route is mentioned, and thats where the story goes for Ada from what i know. Also all the survivor games, dead aim, code veronica and 4 are not included.
