Recommend a good Anime?

I'm looking for some anime but i'm not sure what's for me, so heres my top 10 which should give you a good idea of what i'm in to so if anyone can recommend something that would be cool.

1: Ghost in the Shell 2
2: Cowboy Bebop
3: Neon Genesis Evangelion
4: Gungrave
5: Ghost in the Shell
6: Hellsing
7: Ghost in the shell Stand Alone Complex
8: Akira
9: Texhnolyze
10: Patlabour

As you can see i'm into the more realistic looking and serious anime and i quite like sci-fi too.

Anything Gundam related. From that list, you like Mecha... and I see a lack of Gundam, be it Zeta or SEED, ZZ or 0078!

Believe it or not i've actually never seen any Gundam, don't know why but i've always been a bit dubious about it, i suppose it seemed a bit kiddie although since i've not seen any that is completely unfounded.

Judging by your list, you'd probably enjoy Serial Experiments Lain. Many of the creative staff from Texhnolyze were involved and its pretty much a classic cyber punk anime.

Also - if you're looking to branch out, look into Kino's Journey and Haibane Renmei. Both are thoughful, sophisticated anime but aren't as hardcore science fiction.

... yes, one of the biggest series of all time, if not the biggest - is kiddie?

Please, someone help me set the record straight. :(

Sorry Kira, no offence was meant. But Dragonball Z is one of the biggest Anime series of all time too and i'd call that kiddie but thats my opionion and i'm not looking for an arguement.

Thanks Paul, i'll look into those, have to say i've never really heard of any of it apart from Serial Experiments Lain and i didn't know anything about it.

Dragonball Z isn't big, it's mainstream. There's a difference there.

Gundam however is one of the FOUNDING Anime, and is still going strong today - that's what I mean by biggest.

Watch the original, the Zeta, then SEED, then SEED Destiny. Skip Wing, G Gundam and potentially ZZ.

- Crest of the Stars: It starts slow but it really is great, hardcore sci-fi Space Opera. Character based and with good dialogue.

- Haibane Renmei: Difficult to describe, but thoughtful and interesting show. Not sci-fi, but I suppose you could call it more slice-of-life in some ways.

- RahXephon: If you liked NGE you might like this one. It's based more around Mayan mythology than anything else.

- Stand Alone Complex: 2nd Gig: I presume you're already looking into getting this if you haven't already.

- Last Exile: I really liked this show. Set in a steampunk setting of airships and futuristic technology. You'll probably know after the first episode whether this show's for you, but I think you'll like this one.

following the horror lead i'd say elfen lied

following the mecha lead i'd go for Marsian successor Nadesico and Full Metal Panic (if u like comedy too) or perhaps the classics of Macross and Escaflowne

Cheers people for all the recommendations.

I'm now looking thinking of getting Serial Experiments Lain, Last Exile and Macross not sure about the others yet but if anyone has any more recommendations that would be great too.

You could try Mushishi, Utawarerumono, Blood+ or Ergo Proxy.

Mushishi, is about a Mushishi called Ginko thats goes about researching Mushi (A organism below bacteria) and helps people out with their Mushi problems.

Utawarerumono, is about an unknown guy who leads a civil war.

Blood+, is a prequel series to Blood: The Last Vampire.

Ergo Proxy, is a sci-fi series about a Proxy and a woman called Real that get exiled to the wastelands from their dome home.

When you say more realistic, do you mean the character design?
If you do and you don't mind older settings/periods in history, I'd say try out Otogi Zoshi (it's sometimes spelt Otogizoushi). It has far more realistic looking characters, that starts off in the Heian period (972AD) and concludes in the 20th/21st century. It's a very good Samurai anime, with a superntaural element when it changes over to the modern day setting.
If you don't mind much older anime? Try out Doomed Megalopolis, which is a horror based anime, also with a supernatural feel to it.

ok thanks guys.

Miaka-chan - yeah character design is basically what i meant, i prefer the more realistic people like in Ghost in the Shell for instance to the over the top emotions of some anime, thats just personal preference though.

Im pritty much the same, I like some anime with the goofy faces (Bleach, Fullmetal Alchemist) but they're rarely there, but I do think the silly parts like that spoil the serious feel of Fullmetal.

Well actually, as far as i'm concerned, the following Gundam series are "kiddy". They were originally pitched at kids, though some of the elements are perfectly watchable for adults.

- Gundam 0079 Series (not the movies. The series was a bit of a monster of the week toy commericial)
- Gundam Double Zeta (note: "kiddy" not synonym for "crap", it just happens to coincide)
- G Gundam (The series brief was practically "introduce gundam to a new generation". A silly fighting anime.)
- Gundam Wing (Again the brief was to recycle Gundam 0079 for a new generation, Especially a new generation that included Females. The plot totally lacks coherence and logic, because it's just an excuse to have robots beat each other up. Chances are that your perception of Gundam is shaped by Gundam Wing, as it's the only series to be shown on TV here. It's not entirely terrible, but I'd never recommend it to anyone.)
- Gundam X (And the same again, except that it's not available outside Asia)
- Superior Defender Gundam Force (No brainer there, this was aimed squarely at the youngest of kids)

And then you have what I feel are the "Teenager" Gundams, occasionally quite mature in content, but then lacking a certain something
- Gundam Seed (blood gets spilled and so on, but really it's quite an adolescent boy's anime were stuff gets blown up. Yet another "gundam for a new generation")
- Gundam Seed Destiny (as above but with more terribly patronising plot twists and deus ex machinas, and a long line of dribble forming in the mouth of the last 20 episodes).
- Turn A Gundam (Totally different to every other Gundam. Perhaps its lack of straightforward action is a sign of maturity, but there isn't a lot of violence and the death tally barely breaks into double figures)
- Victory Gundam (sure it's "dark" in that there's lots of killing, but 90% of the protagonists are young kids which makes it clear where they're pitching it)

That leaves Zeta Gundam, 08TH MS Team, 0080, 0083, F91, Char's Counterattack... and possibly the original series' movies which cut the flab. These series were largely pitched to exisiting fans who had grown up with the original series, and thus come across as far more mature (sadly, ZZ Gundam was a major blip and kind of ruins the continuity). The first four in that list are IMO where it's at, though I also love Turn A and Victory, and quite like Gundam Seed.

Though this is kind of irrelevent unless you're ok with Importing, since the only Gundam properties worth buying that are available are Gundam Seed and the Gundam 0079 movies (3pc boxset coming soon...)

I also recommend Macross Plus if you haven't seen it. Mecha or no mecha, it's a good anime. Escaflowne gets a nod from me also, as it always does as a decent anime that treads a line between brilliant action and more intimate character-based interactions.

Ugh, don't mention Wing or G Gundam, please. <_<;

I wouldn't put SEED as a teenager one personally, but you're right about the others. Regardless, it's not a kiddy series. :)

WOW! Talk about harsh with nothing to back it up! I suppose that's the blue blooded Gundam fan in you talking
I think Gundam Wing should be watched as a character driven anime and not necessarily just as a Gundam anime. I know I haven't watched it 8 times for the messages and morales on the fruitlessness of war; I watch it for the characters (and before you say anything, no not just the pretty pilots  ). It's an anime filled with people that have taken on dual personalities to cope with all the madness that is going on around them and how they try to take back control of their lives.
If you just want to watch Gundam anime for the mechs and the battles then by all means go for the general consensus of what is a good Gundam anime. If on the other hand you want a character driven storyline, then go for Wing and if you can overlook the overdosing of maniacal frenzied nutters in Seed and maybe the rinse and repeat battles in the first half, Seed is also a very good Gundam for characters.

Gundam Wing a character driven anime? How delightfully absurd! It's an utterly ridiculous show in which straight-faced, 2 dimensional moron children say cold things, blow themselves up, fail to die and come back to repeat the process ad-nauseum. Until they all start blathering about pacifism or the spirit of the warrior instead of just trying too hard to be cool. Or is it all one and the same? What little characterisation there is pales in comparrison to most of the Gundam developed before then, not least because large chunks of it are simply copied verbatim from previous series (so why not just watch Seed, which is the latest reworking?).

It's Mecha for attention deprived tweenagers born in the SUPER BOLD ITALIC UNDERLINE! generation, NOT a rich character driven drama. I think trying claim that it is about characters probably does it more injustice than even my harsh criticisms of what is still a passable show.

Miaka, I will counter your argument with two simple words. Well, one simple person if you want to be accurate - the person who is in my opinion, one of the most annoying characters to EVER come out of Japanese Animation.

Relena Peacecraft.
