Golgo 13: The Professional - I'm not into rating with a score so don't expect one from me, hah. I hate the things.
This is a pretty decent film all things considered. It has that bond-like feel to a degree and yet, you never know if golgo is truly good or bad in this film. It's a pretty bleak story as well overall and has a surprising twist at the end which i ended up discussing for a while with Professor Irony. For a film which on the outside is mostly action, there is a fair bit of depth to it which may surprise you.
Also yes, this is the one with the infamous CG, and when you watch it through normally, it's not as abysmal as it looks when you watch it on youtube, specially when you consider when the film was actually made. I do still wonder why Dezaki chose to implement it in the first place, as it didn't feel like it needed it. It was a fairly experimental film though so that would explain it as well. One of the things i did have an issue with in the film was the audio quality. It could easily have been the version i watched, but it doesn't feel to have aged well.

I feel i should note this is my first venture into the world of Golgo 13, so it was an interesting experience, one which i think will lead me to checking out other Golgo works in the future.

Jack and the Beanstalk-A nice enough musical adaption of the classic fairy tale, the move dates back to 1974 and was directed by Gisaburo Sugii,it is entertaining enough and i really enjoyed it,the songs while a bit out of place for the style of story are one of the standout features of the movie as the songs range to upbeat pop tunes to rock and other wide ranges of music and are really fun,no point digging in to much into the story as we all know the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk, there were slight changes like the introduction of the giants mother who is a evil witch who has kidnapped a beautiful princess,in this version jack has a pet dog who serves as the comic relief,a fun little movie that is a must watch, not a classic by any means but still a little gem of a movie.7/10

The Tibetan Dog-A charming movie from 2011,it is a Japanese and Chinese co production from Madhouse and the China Film Group Corporation,it was directed by Masayuki Kojima(Monster,Master Keaton). The film follows the adventures of a young boy called Jiantan who after the death of his mother must go and live with his father who left him and his mother when he was still a infant, his father lives a peaceful life as a doctor and farmer in the Tibetan prairies, his father is cold and distant and Jiantan struggles to form a relationship with his father,he is also bullied by the local kids for being a new face on the Prairie,he finds it hard to adapt to his new life but soon finds friendship in the form of a mysterious dog and quickly become the best of friends, but when local farmers and there cattle are being found dead, fear and desperation soon spread over the Prairie,is Jaintan,s dog, friend or foe as his new best friend gets the blame for the deaths but there are bigger and more evil forces at hand,a beautiful movie with some amazing artwork and detail and a excellent musical score, one of the best films i,ve seen in recent years.9/10.

Kochikame(or to give its full name,Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen Mae Hashutsujo"This is the police station in front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward")movie 1-A little gem of a movie based upon a massive manga/anime franchise, the manga created by Osamu Akimoto started way back in 1976 and in on going even to this day,the anime ran from 1996-2004 and had a massive 373 episodes and 9 specials and two feature movies to it name, sadly not much has been fansubbed,i guess due to the fact that there are so many episodes, but i,m glad i got the chance to see this movie, think of a more slapstick Patlabor and You're Under Arrest and the lead character Kankichi Ryotsu is a blast and even though i,m unfamiliar with the series and its wacky cast of characters i instantly fell in love with them, maybe one day more episodes will be subbed(even just a batch of episodes would be great)or if hell freezes over some company will maybe licence the series or at least release the two movies, anyway the movie is worth checking out just so you can see a small part of one of japans most beloved series.7/10.

Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!!

On the surface this looks like another light, frothy magic girl show with some heavy-ish tendencies towards fanservice. But look a bit deeper and you’ll find some gallows humour designed to challenge your ability to laugh.

How else would you describe it when a lot of the comedy is based around a male character frequently beating two female characters with a baseball bat, and who later in the series seems to be enjoying this act? And what is it exactly with the two leading magical girl characters and their weak bladders...?

Anyway, the plot. Seems there’s this parallel dimension featuring cute girls who for reasons unknown have taken it upon themselves to charge up any humans who are feeling down. Literally too, with massive two-pronged plugs wired to the national grid. Among them is the main character, Plug Cryostat (love that name...) who appears to be her division’s biggest underperformer. She and her kind are supposed to be invisible in the Earth realm, until leading male Sento Oumi proves capable of seeing them and interacting with them. The story itself is episodic in nature: usually there’ll be an afflicted human in need of a boost, and in the process of attending to said human, Plug and co will, with some help from Sento, find a deeper sense of purpose in their jobs. There are some overarching plot points and hints of a more sinister undercurrent, but by the end of the series these are either resolved anticlimactically or left unexplored.

On the plus side, the female designs are gorgeous! Plug in particular is one of the sexiest anime characters I’ve ever seen. To see her jogging in the closing sequence is to understand why I say so; her proportions are oh so perfect. The omake episodes also offer some bawdy fun in which the fanservice is ramped up to ridiculous levels. All I can say is: “BEWARE THE OCTOPUS!!!!

Ultimately this is a fun but shallow series, and how much you enjoy it depends on whether or not you can see the funny side of blunt force trauma and domestic abuse. Put another way, if you get the black humour of Jimmy Carr and Frankie Boyle then you can handle this anime.

As it stands, this deserves 5/10. But Plug is so sexy, so I must amend the score to 6.5/10.

Well, you need to consider what existed in 1983. CGI was more a myth than reality, you could see really few examples in movies, TV shows and so on (I think you could count them on your hands). Quality was total crap if compared to nowadays standards, but with early 80's eyes that stuff looked simply incredible. It was perceived more like science fiction than reality, because computers were still far from being part of everyday life and most people had no real experience about them.
Just think about the movie The Last Starfighter or the music video of "Money for Nothing" by Dire Straits. They made a huge impact on common imaginery, I would say that the sense of wonder raised by "Money for Nothing" had been bigger than the one raised by Avatar. That CGI in the 80's looked simply incredible and sensational, just because they were the first mass examples. "Money for Nothing" was a huge hit, it was on heavy rotations on a lot of TV channels, as I wrote it looked like science fiction became reality. People simply wowed while looking at it.
Back to Golgo 13, using that sequence in 1983 (before than The Last Starfighter and Money for Nothing, same year as Tron) was a huge display of technique that caused an even bigger sense of wonder in the viewers. Put in perspective it had a lot of sense to use that sequence, because it was safe to assume it would have caused a big positive impact to the viewers. I'm pretty sure that (in proportion) those few seconds of CGI costed way more than 5 minutes of CGI with today standards.

Grey: Digital Target

My first instinct was to call this cheesy, only I didn’t quite know what “cheesy” meant. So off to Urban Dictionary I went, where I found this:

<quote on cheesy snipped as this board does not like quotes within quotes>

Now I’m not so sure. It’s not like this is trying too hard to create a desolate hopeless wasteland where people must fight and kill to advance in society. The central messages of war being bad and that authority must never be blindly followed, these are frequently brought forward in a not always very subtle way. There’s violence and destruction aplenty, with no small amount of melodrama added to the mix. But in the end they are drowned out by the sheer pulp entertainment value of the production. Then we must go back to the central messages, which are still as salient today as ever.

Now that I think about it, was I thinking “cheesy” because I went in expecting this to be some meaningful masterpiece? It couldn’t be, because my expectations were already of the aforementioned pulp entertainment, which mbtGrey: Digital Targetg/b did deliver in an erudite fashion. So the argument over its cheesiness is rendered dead in the water and it receives rb]7/10[/b].
The manga is better.

I think what does not help the anime these days is that the story has been copied more than a few times. WHen I first saw it the story was largely original (only thing that came close was Logans Run), but since then we've had The Matrix series, The Hunger Games, Battle Royal, which follow a similar concept, plus stories like this have generally become darker. I think if it had been written in the last 10 years it would be grittier and less 'cheesy' imho

YES! i know! This isn't anime, but the style is slightly anime and i thought it was good enough to review it on here anyway.

This show was amazing! I've been missing out big time!

First of all the characters: They are all very likable and have great development as the series progressed. Katara probably had the best development. The story is also quite engaging as you are eager to know what happens at the end of each episode. The humor is actually very well done, which most shows, western or anime, seem to struggle with. But the three things that were amazing in this show was the animation, fight scenes and the style. The animation was SO well done. The movement was fluid and never looked cheap. Things like facial expressions even had great animation! The fight scenes were epic!!! Seeing as this show is mainly about elements, this sets up the fight scenes to be very creative, and by god they are!

The only bad things i have to say is that the last few episodes are kinda naff compared to the rest of the series. Only a minor flaw

Overall, Avatar is a fantastic cartoon that should be watched by anime fans aswell!

Great show. I absolutely loved it. Looking forward to the follow up too, just waiting for most of it to come out on DVD and I'll rent it from Lovefilm.

Jerome (Manga UK) said on a podcast, he thought it was better than a lot of anime out there. I'd have to agree, the story is brilliant.

Iron man: Rise of the technovore
8/10
A great Marvel movie for fans of the Marvel Universe

The animation for this was great! As to be expected from Madhouse. Also the character designs were cool. I always wondered what the Iron man suit would look like in anime form. The characters themselves were nice. They made the Punisher even MORE BADARSE then he already is! I thought the story was good too. It was simple and sweet. The films biggest strength is the action scenes. There are LOADS of action scenes in this. If your looking for some great fight scenes, this is for you!

The only bad thing i have to say is that the villain was incredibly boring and it wasn't very clear on how he got the Technovores. The technovores itself was kinda complex as to how it works and how its made. I would of given this a higher score if it wasn't for the crappy villain.

Overall, Iron man: Rise of the technovore is a great anime film with great action and characters. If you are into the Marvel Universe, then you should give it a go. If your into anime, then you might like this. Or if your like me and like Marvel and anime, then you should definitely pick this up!!!

Aku no Hana/Flowers of Evil (eps 1-3)

Strange, creepy, angsty school-based SoL. Not your average anime - for a start the rotoscoped animation lends a big chunk of realism and the sound (music, background noise... even the voice cast) add so much to this.

Definitely my pick of the current season.

Black Magic M66 -7/10

I quite enjoyed that, despite quite a poor dub (although to be expected from a lesser known 90's anime). Was like an anime version of The Terminator.

yu yu hakusho

it was a good fighting anime.

but theres a few things thats on my mind about it

1 whats the purpose of pu, yeah hes cute and is the team mascot, and turns in to a bad ass phinoix but what else can he do or has done, i would of thought he would of fused with yusuke or something,

2 sometimes the dubbing is a bit crappy

3 yusuke is suppose to be a detective how the hell did it come to being a fighting anime

4 why have some characters haven't been seen again like hes teachers, mother its like they drop off the face of the earth.

5 the golden seal movie was pointless, they should of added the other movie too.

6 sometimes the series was half assed like near the ending or it took its sweet sweet time * dark tournament * slow passing,

7 when yusuke went to go see the former female detective what was the point of seeing her. in fact theres a few pointless things in this series.

but i guess it was a good fighting series, the story was a lil weak but the characters was llikeable bo-tan is a babe, and it had its funny moments,

but i enjoyed it and i wouldn't mind watching it again

7.5/10

The scene in the lift close to the end remains a masterclass in creating and sustaining suspense. One of my favourite scenes in all of anime.
