So I was on my way to my favourite cinema when I rounded a corner and saw a big truck. Not just any truck but a rather colourful one. One emblazoned with many colourful images. These images were PlayStation emblems and screenshots from games. This immediately piqued my interest so I wandered over to it.
Now what could Sony be doing… except demonstrating the PlayStation Move!!!
Just to get pictures and a hands on would make my day but alas it was not to be.
I asked a chap in a GAME uniform and he said that it was a press event. With that I departed and watched two films.
Anyway, here's a question for the forum:
Move or Kinect.
I have to say that PlayStation Move impresses me the most. It does what the Wii does but seems to advance on the concepts pioneered by Nintendo.
The controllers for Move, from all reports, seem to be well-designed with buttons and rumble features. Most importantly it is implemented well in the games (the most important part) and what games there are.
It’s got Wii imitations and shovel-ware but it is also being implemented in games being released right now like RUSE (a RTS) where navigating the menu wasn’t as solid as a mouse and keyboard but better than a control-pad.
The fact that the PlayStation Move has controllers is important because it allows developers an easier time developing games and creating game mechanics compared to the controller-less Kinect. For example:
Forza – People who played the game at E3 were impressed that you could imitate driving but were less impressed by the fact that players’ couldn’t control acceleration or deceleration (that was left to the game).
Anyway we’re also looking at Killzone 3, Heavy Rain and SOCOM supporting Move.
The fact that Move has controllers is probably the reason why Kinect hasn't got anything other than party-games and I’m not sure how designers might be able to make Gears of War 3 work.
Overall, Kinect looks like a nice toy but not a serious gaming device.
