Phone game query help from a non gamer please

Hello, I don't really play games much, but my son does on his phone.
He is at a high level on War Robots and needs a new SIM card because the other tariff was pants and this one is much better.
We are terrified he is going to lose his progress when he switches card, we tried saving via the game to his google play account (he has a Samsung phone) but it just keeps not doing it and I don't know why. I tried getting it to save to a new account (mine) but it kept saying it wanted a school account rather than personal!!? WT heck?

I am utterly clueless, tried Googling, not a great deal of help. I feel that a change of SIM shouldn't affect the game surely but very tentative to change until I know a bit more about it. I literally play a daft little word game and candy crush, I'm an observer not a player lol. Does anyone have any expertise in this area before I have a week's worth of (sizeable) teenager thumping through the house like a grumpy yeti?
 
If you mean Sim card as in the card you get from O2/Vodaphone/Three that has your telephone number, then it shouldnt effect your sons game account as your save should be linked to your Phone/Google Play Account

(You might be getting the school account error as you're trying to move the child game account to an adult Google account and it doesnt like it? I imagine the games already logged into your sons account)

If you're worried loosing the game account and not sure its backed up. Keep a list of the following: (info from the game website)

 
Sorry for double post. Another easy way to check if you're signed in

-From your mobile home screen swipe up
This will bring up all your apps and a search bar
  • Search "Play Games"
  • Open Play Games app
  • Go to Profile (Bottom Right)
Should show you logged into a gmail account and your play account name

If so, then there is a very good chance (still not 100% though) that your account is linked

You can also click the three dots at the top of the screen. Click settings. Click "Change account for games" and see if its on the list DO NOT CLICK ANY BUTTON THAT SAYS "CHANGE" WHILE ON THIS PAGE
 
Thank you! All sorted and thankfully his progress has not been lost. He is getting a little large for me to be able to sit on him when he has meltdowns these days, I'm only little ..
