Otaku Question

How you know someone is Otaku ?

Someone is really Otaku who watch to anime everyday and not care about real life world or Someone only buy figure, anime, manga and anime video game collection. Otaku is same as geek or nerd ?

I'am not Otaku. Anime is my little hobbies. I'am like various video game and tv show.

I always thought that an otaku is the anime equivalent of what we would call an anorak. I don't think your sole interest would have to be anime to be an otaku - it just has to be one of them. You could have a deep interest in other subjects as well (for example I have a deep interest in comedy and I think still be an otaku).

In terms of otaku questions, does anyone know what the collective noun for otaku is? I think I read somewhere that "otaku" itself was the word.

You could always be a comedy otaku :)

The strict use of 'otaku' as a synonym for 'geek' (only with an anime focus specifically) is a western invention. And the word 'geek' itself nowadays seems to mean anyone who has seen Star Wars once in their life rather than someone deeply committed to the lifestyle of a devotee.

An "Otaku" is someone who has no other interest outside Japanese stuff.

If you feel the need to say that liking Japanese animation is a big part of who you are.. then that's rather sad, IMO.

This is precisely why I hate Big Bang Theory. It made being a nerd the "in thing", so not-even-remotely-nerdy stuff (like owning an iPhone) makes people proclaim "OH I AM SUCH A NERD LOL". Nerds do not call themselves nerds ironically. That is just a hipster.

That's a weeaboo.

Perhaps, but then again I would have trouble trying to name Japanese comedians. The only ones I can name are the double act Gamarjobat (who are unknown in Japan) and Hiroshi Shimizu who performed at this year's Edinburgh Fringe.

i watch anime everyday so i guess that makes me an otaku. and i find reality cruel and sad so yeah im an otaku. some people might find it sad but i dont think so cause anime is about the stories, the animation, the kick ass action and the ecchi. i really find my self lost with out watching anime but dont get me wrong i do get out and about and such.

I would say that I'm more like an otaku now since I've been on this website. I watch anime and read manga a lot more than I did before.

Same thing, really. Except they call themselves Otaku and consider Weeaboo an insult.

I think my interest in anime is a fairly big part of who I am. It's one of my main hobbies and brings me enjoyment, so I don't see why it's sad to say that. So what is it *not* sad to say is a big part of who you are? And sad by who's standards, People who spend their evenings watching X-Factor and Strictly Come Dancing? I think I can live with their disapproval.

As this thread already shows, labels like this are sort of useless when everyone defines them in radically different ways. There's also the matter of some anime viewers who seem to believe females cannot be otaku at all, only fujoshi (heaven forbid they might not actually be into that). Then the non-word weeaboo seems to be applied to anyone and everyone who expresses some positive opinion of Japan without being cool enough to justify it. Labels are a nuisance.

I've been called a nerd/anorak/whatever (in the most pejorative sense) all my life, and I'll be one until I die, so I don't mind being called an otaku at all. Ultimately, I'm the kind of person who spends all her free income on anime-related goods, played FOTNS music at her wedding and honeymooned at Comiket. It may make me a tragic human being, but I'm having a whole lot of fun being tragic.

I would personally have less respect for people who felt that they desperately had to earn the approval of others by being into 'accepted' forms of entertainment against their desires. So in other words, more hip people might think I am a loser, but chances are I think they are losers too. It all works out in the end.

Incidentally I like otaku of all kinds. My father-in-law is a bus nerd and I get along with him like a house on fire, because he has the same kind of personality as me even if the actual hobby is completely different. Ayase's car thrills in the other thread are cool even though I don't know a bonnet from an exhaust pipe.

@Paradox295 thats worse tv is terrible theres nothing on there but reality tv shows, vampire, wearwolf series, soaps, the news, there all terrible and boring.

i find watching anime more enjoyable, fun, funny, heart throbbing, i just love to watch them.

@RUI i agree with you. something you enjoy is part of who you are and there are people who likes other things like x factor, get me outa here ect and its something they enjoy.

You played FOTNS music at your wedding!! I am in awe of you Rui (good awe that is).

Anyway I agree with Rui, labels on the whole are simply a nuisance and I ignore them completely. Due to this and the fact I don't know what many labels even mean (For example anorak? I thought that was a rain jacket?) I don't think I would care very much if any one did call me one of these names, I'm just so beyond caring to be honest.

Also, this thread is too wide for my screen lol.

I'm more talking about the type of people who won't shut up about it. Everything they do involves anime etc.

Yeah, uh.. that's a double standard.

You insult TV by saying it's all "terrible and boring", but if someone said the same thing about anime, you'd flip your **** and say they're chavs and haters.

Also, I'll agree with Reality TV and Soaps sucking.. but Vampires.. not so much. Buffy's friggen awesome ;D

Hehe... This actually makes me wonder if the whole idea of what constitutes "accepted" or "normal" pastimes has become a lot more narrow and rigid. My Grandad loved trains to the point that would probably considered pretty sad these days, but I think everybody who knew him just accepted that as a part of who he was. It seems people have a far greater desire now to ridicule and victimise people whose interests fall outside the norm.

Not to mention AF you friggin loved the **** out of Vampire Knight so I don't think you can rag on True Blood and the like :p. Not that I watch it I'm just noting the hypocrisy.

IMO an otaku, like previous posters have said, is someone who takes their enjoyment of anime to an extreme level tothe exclusion of most other things. Although people who identify themselves as otaku do not always fit this description.

I am definitely not an otaku, never been to a con, never cosplayed (except for fancy-dress parties which isn't the same) and I own a patheticly small anime collection as evidenced by the anime collection thread :p

I would however call myself a geek since I'm into a lot of typically "geek" things and have a greater knowledge of them than the average member of the general public. However there's little I know truly in-depth except perhaps Star Wars, for example, though I read comics and have a fair knowledge of the characters, I don't buy them regularly and only know about a select few characters like Spider-man and Batman. I guess basically that though I have a wide range of geek interest, I'm quite selective about what I am REALLY interested in.

It doesn't help when even people in this thread are giving themselves labels. Some people are just so desperate to belong to a clique instead of being a person.

You aren't a fujoshi? That's news to me! :D
