Optimum plan UK Ghibli extravaganza

NEO Magazine are reporting that Optimum have lined up Hayao Miyazaki's latest record breaking movie, Howl's Moving Castle, for an Autumn UK theatrical release, preceded by limited theatrical runs for six other (as yet un-named) Studio Ghibli movies.

Also, The Cat Returns has been penned in for a UK DVD release in May.

In other related Miyazaki news- one of his previous films, Kiki's Delivery Service, is apparently being adapted into a live-action film by Disney.

I'm interested to see which Ghibli movies they pick; would be quite a shock to see Grave of the Fireflies up on the big screen. Really though, virtually all Ghibli efforts deserve theatrical success and I would love to get a chance to see the likes of 'Castle in the Sky' in a cinema.

Great news indeed. although the autumn seems a while away now, it sure will be amazing to see them on the big screen at last. as long as it isn't confined to one or two screens in central London or something...

I'd be surprised if Grave of The Fireflies didn't make it into the theatrical cut, since Optimum already have the rights for it. I've got my fingers crossed for Porco Rosso (since I've not seen it yet), Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle In The Sky. It would be nice to see Spirited Away get another theatrical run, although I'd probably prefer to see another film get the spotlight for a bit.

Grave of the Fireflies is my favourite. Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away will likely be screened, as they are the most popular. Laputa, Porco Rosso or Nausicaa would be nice.

It will depend whether the theatrical run is only instigated by Optimum, if it is I can't see Disney giving them the rights to show Mononoke, Laputa and Kiki.
Still, in the spirit of Ghibli they may get together, I hope so!

I'd love to see The Cat Returns and Whisper of the Heart on the big screen but I guess it'll be Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away etc.

Not sure I fancy a live action Kiki's Delivery Service, Jiji will probably be played by Salem of Sabrina the Teenage Witch fame  It takes a lot for me to want to watch live action versions of anything, I'm a nutty Sailor Moon fan but it still took many months before I would watch the live TV show.

I'm hoping that Howl's Moving Castle is shown late autumn as the older my daughter is the better, as at at least 2 years old she may be quiet through-out an entire movie :?:

They seriously need to do that!!!

Kikis was the last VA role by the late, great Phill Hartman BTW (he done a few different voices in the Simpsons, like Lionel Hutz)

I decided to explore enemy teritory and look for info on Nausicaa and the other Ghibli DVD releases and this is what i found:
http://disneyvideos.disney.go.com/moviefinder/products/2534403.html

To tell you the truth, i don't know what to make of it really. the fact that they're being released in the USA next week suggests a region 2 DVD release in the near future, but the whole thing is so...disneyfied. still, if that's what it takes to get the likes of 'Nausicaa' and 'Porco Rosso' to our shores, i suppose we have to accept it.

i meant the way the trailer was presented, and the dub. it's inevitable i guess, but at least the original Japanese dub is on the DVD as well.

Amen to that.

That's not to say I have anything against the english dub for those who like that.

Phew! Gotta cover your tracks some times otherwise some people may start hating you for it! Oh, you hate me already? That's okay then.

 :D

I liked the Castle in the Sky dub....

And as i said on another forum, people are saying how good the dubs on the new releases are (cat returns, Nasuica and Porco Rosso)

I'm not sure I could physically bear to watch Grave of the Fireflies on a full cinema screen. Previously I only saw a low quality version on a PC screen (before it came out on dvd) and that almost broke me. :(

It was the only time I've experienced in the cinema where everyone was sobbing or on the verge of tears, apart from Dancer in the Dark.
I'm still trying to get my girlfriend to watch it to see the true power of anime.
