Official Foreign Imports

Taxes are random. There is huge volumes of mail being delivered so when it enters the EU they generally just pick out some items that can be taxed. If they had to tax everything it would take too long so thus sometimes you get taxed other times you won't.

Though if your getting it delivered by FedEx they like to pay the tax for you but then ask for the tax money later on and an extra €10 admin charge.

That's a more general overview of the tax situation. We were talking specifically about the retailers who actually offer things tax free, such as yesasia. Nothing you order from them will land you with a charge.

While on the subject of random taxation though, anything coming into the UK from the USA over the import limit almost *always* gets taxed.

Well from my experince about half my stuff got taxed from America, and all my orders were €300+

Well if Play Asia say they have paid the tax in advance, then you shouldn't get taxed.

*edit* also for example books are tax free, so maybe they have some way of having your products tax free. *edit*

Maybe I'm just unlucky then. :(

It won't matter come december anyway, as the import limit is going up to about £100. :D

Just so we don't confuse anyone, Play Asia and yesasia are two different companies. yesasia are tax free, Play Asia aren't.

Sorry I'm a bit tired, didn't see the "yes" part.

I believe Yesasia has a UK distribution centre and moves stock there then sends it on, so they'd take care of the taxes on their initial move. I've certainly never been charged and none of their stuff lately has had, that I recall, an international postage label.

Ok, I have just this minute recieved the R3 Evangelion 1.0 & 5cm Per Second.

Initial recation is very good. Both came in nice quality slipcases (the actually useful kind where you slide the disc out of the *side*) with reversible covers! They look better quality than most UK releases...

Will post my reaction to the video / sub quality once I have watched them.

I should've got the R2J of 5cm... in the first place. I've seen images of the video quality on AoD, and I must say it puts the R1's to shame.

If only I knew it had Eng subs back then.

Woops. Must be getting confused with my asian DVD regions. ;p

Either way though, the R1 was the worst of the 3 releases. I'll edit in the comparisons when I've found them in a mo.

EDIT: No credit for the screencaps. But here they are.

It doesnt have english subs. I've got the LE. Its worth it for the extras but i still might get the R3 LE for a subbed version.

Right then. Evangelion 1.0 Hong Kong R3.

A technical summing-up for here, then a proper review coming later. The picture and sound quality is excellent. I might try watching it in Cantonese next time just for kicks. No discernible interlacing. The picture *is* dark though I don't think that's anything to do with the DVD, so watch it at night or at least draw the curtains.

The subs were mostly excellent, the language didn't sound clunky and was obviously done by someone with a good understanding of both languages. However there were two glaring (and fairly unforgivable) errors. Rei is once addressed as Amamiya rather than Ayanami, and when she says "I don't have anything else" the subs read "I have everything else"

As for my opinions of the film itself... :D
