Official Foreign Imports

Ok, you asked for it - now here it is!

This thread is for posting info on officially released foreign import DVDs. My primary aim in creating this thread is to enable people to avoid bootleg foreign DVDs and buy offical ones with English subs before their release in the US / UK. While rare, they do exist - Studio Ghibli's Japanese releases for example, and some Hong Kong and South Korean editions.

In order to avoid bootlegs, please post a link to the product page of a reputable seller such as:
YesAsia: http://www.yesasia.com
Play-Asia: http://www.play-asia.com
CD Japan: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp

Examples:

Evangelion 1.0 HK R3 - English Subs:
http://www.yesasia.com/global/evang...itled-hong-kong/1011401655-0-0-0-en/info.html
5 Centimetres Per Second HK R3 - English Subs:
http://www.yesasia.com/global/5-cen...ng-kong-version/1005118197-0-0-0-en/info.html
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time HK R3 - English Subs:
http://www.yesasia.com/global/the-g...ng-kong-version/1005058577-0-0-0-en/info.html

I would be grateful if a Mod could sticky this to avoid it falling off the page into oblivion.

Good idea for thread! :]

It's a pity all HK stuff is R3 - I don't have the enthusiasm or the know-how to make my DVD player (which is about 5 years old) region free. And that €12 Evangelion looks so good, too :/

there are official ones with english subs? that aren't R1's?
Yep. :D

CG, just google your player name and "region free" - It's usually just a code you tap into the remote.

Chances are, it's very simple. Mine is about four years old...all it took to make it region-free was about 10 button presses on the remote control.

If you know your model make and number (probably on the casing anyway), you can check it against lists online to get the code. Reallty simple stuff.

I just did that, ayase, and found out that my DVD player is multiregion out of the box ^__^

I think I shall definitely have to order that Evangelion DVD now :] Though, I'd like to get some more opinions about the release and the quality of the English subs first. Has anyone else, among the AUKN crowd, imported this release?

That's even easier then!

Well I have "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" and it's fine. The only difference I found is that it tended to use the Japanese way of using names to address people,
eg: "Can Mokoto leap through time?" rather than "Can you leap through time?" which is a just a more literal translation.

I have Eva and 5cm on order though, so I'll take the risk for all of us (how selfless of me  ) and tell you what they're like when they arrive.

Just realised I made a typo it the sub quote. Corrected.

CG I recommend you get a DVD not from Region 2 to test. The info on the web might be related a certain batch / series of your player. But, I'm almost 100% sure that if newer players are region free, yours should be or should be unlockable by some code you tap into the remote.

OT - very good stuff Ayase =) I'll get 5cm and the girl. The Eva is also very tempting...

The 5CM HK LE also has eng subs, i believe. Still available on YesAsia.
I'm considering it to go a long with my LE japanese which is subless.
Also very tempted 'The Girl...' but with the impending uk releasing...not so certain.

I'm seriously considering studying japanese again. I can understand bits and pieces, but not enough to watch it without subs though. this way I could get my anime from wherever comes out first / cheaper / whichever other criteria I have.

Yep, I think I will try that out. Not sure how easy it'll be to find an R1 or an R3 DVD around here, though :/

Awesome! I'm looking forward to seeing how Hong Kong treated Eva :]

If you have a few minutes to spare simply read off the make and code on the player and google it and you should find a code that unlocks the player.

I'm no expert about unlocking players, but this pageseems to be your best bet.

Very well, apparently.

The R2J release of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence has a variety of subtitle tracks, including English.

I also know the R2J release of Saikano has English subs, but I can't seem to find it :/

EDIT: I managed to find both volumes of the Saikano OVA (Another Love Song), but still no luck with the TV series.

(She, the Ultimate Weapon) - Another love song mission1
(She, the Ultimate Weapon) - Another love song mission2

The R2J release of Appleseed Ex Machina also has English subtitles. The premium edition also includes them.

Good stuff ryuzaki & melonpan. :thumb:

Any sign of Lupin with English subs at all? :(
Not that I'm aware of. Someone really could do to licence at least the newer Specials. Episode 0: First Contact is probably one of the best Lupins ever. I guess the movies / older specials didn't sell that well for Funi, or you'd think they would have.

That's the only way I'm ever going to be able to watch the Dirty Pair TV series I think.

Incedentally, anyone who found that with English subs would have my undying loyalty.
