Non-Convention events?

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any Japanese related events going on that aren’t conventions? Maybe a J-pop gig or something to that effect.

I'm a little too old (23) to go to the 'glomp fest' that is London Expo, so anything that caters to the same audience, albeit a little older, would be much appreciated. something like a 18/21 over event.

Cheers

I don't get the "I'm a little too old (23)" thing....
Same here... I've never been to one, but I'm pretty sure they dont invite guest VAs so the little kids can go "Who's he?" :D

I'm sure Expo's and conventions can still be up your ally if your still interested. Otherwise, there are Re-cons plotted around the UK at random times (Tokyopop events), one you've just recently missed.
Apart from that, not a clue.

Too old to go to MCM London Expo at 23? Apparently I've passed my sell-by-date at 24 then.

Seriously though, London/Telford Expo are about the only things I know of that are coming up any time soon.

Wow, i didn't mean to offend all 23 and over's, i just was wanted to know if there were any non-convention events that are linked to anime/manga/jpop/ etc.

Something like the Japan Foundation's anime lectures of last November. I've been to the London Expo and i simply didn't like it, that's all.

I have nothing against the people who go, i just felt that it was a little immature for me as it is clearly aimed at a younger demographic.

Haha, apparently sarcasm doesn't work over the internet for me, oh well.

Thinking about it, your best bets might be at cinemas doing "seasons" of anime and such, I believe there's one in Manchester at the moment....cinema screenings usually draw out the more serious crowd...usually....

No offence taken =) I just happen to like events such as the London expo and I've just been to Amecon and loved it as well.
I agree with MrChom as well, you might be better going to seasons and such. There is one I want to go called "How manga took over the world" at the Urbis in Manchester.

Anyway, don't take these things too seriously ;)

How many 23 year olds are there around here anyway!?

Did something happen between 1984 and 1986 that caused everyone born to have a pre determined destiny as an otaku?

January 19 1983 - Hikaru Utada, Japanese singer and songwriter

There was also a seiyuu on the Wiki list I had a look at, but that was the only thing that could be counted at least as a coincidence

I still reckon the amount of 20 something geeks was influenced by fallout from Chernobyl, but that's just me :p

makes sence, America Nukes Japan, Anime takes a huge rise in popularity.

We get the aftereffects of a nuke, and anime fans start to appear here....

coincidence?

There are no such thing as a coincidence... that's destiny! =D

You'll have to try a LOT harder to troll round here ;)

If you want to see people really up in arms just try typing in badly spelled stuff with broken grammar, no carriage returns, AND ALL IN CAPS. Bonus points for a lack of punctuation...

...that or starting 20 topics a week on how much you hate one show....then saying you think you might leave because no one likes you.

Anyway, I like being an old fogey, it gives me an excuse to eat liquorice, drink ale, and talk to people about "The good old days".

I guess you scared him away... :p
Anyway, I'm understand where he was coming from. I do want to meet more over 20 yo anime fans around as well. Is always great fun to talk to anime with 14 yo kids, but I can't actually invite them for a pint.
I believe what go most people on his case were the "serious" business as most people around here tends to take things seriously like.... never!

Too old??? that is sooooo funny I am 27 and I love going to con's if your after a japan event rather than an anime con mate keep an eye on www.londonexpo.com as there is the Japan Expo every year or the Media Expo which is on in October

No, i'm still here, i just wasn't bothered to reply. I didn't get the point he/she (?) was making so I’d thought I’d leave it at that. Plus, I have no idea what troll means : ) (please don’t tell me, the fun is never knowing)

I didn't want to say it, but your point about hanging out with 14 year olds was pretty much what i as alluding to.

Troll is someone who post things in a forum for the sake of flaming.

I'm going, still deciding which movies, but surely I'll see hi no tori (both) and possibly something else. These events at barbican no one speaks to no one.... or else, they don't speak to strangers, but if you fancy going to any and want some company let me know. Also on convention and such, you can always find people who you can speak to. At Amecon I've hang out with Hopeful monster and McIcy a lot, but I think our group of over 20's must grow so you're welcome if you feel like joining us =)
