New Virus pretending to be an Anti-Virus, and how to fix it.

I have just encountered an annoying virus on my computer that is pretending to be an anti-virus. It calls itself 'Vista Antivirus Pro' and it makes a good effort to look genuine, but I still thought it didn't look right.

This is how you remove it.

Lols, I disconnected the infected computer from the internet 15 mins ago and the fake antivirus just gave me a popup saying I am under attack right now. XD Way to blow your cover, virus.

These sort of things are old. Did you get it via drive-by-download? shouldn't be on the dodgy german midget porn sites. tsk tsk... :p

What the heck is 'drive-by-download'?

Also I will have to take your word for it that it is also on dodgy German midget porn sites. I am also intrigued that you seem to draw a distinction from 'legit' German midget porn sites by claiming it is only on the dodgy ones. Are you a connoisseur of German midget porn, my good sir?

Cardybean, it's not something that could have been easily avoided - I got the same ******** "antispyware 2010" virus from the same website Mutsu did (ThePiratBay right? I know, Karma), it infected the computer the moment I entered said URL.

SpyBot and a couple of virus scans done the job and cleaned my laptop :D

Rather common really, if you visit dodgy pages on the internet, some infect your pc with crap. The ones i've seen are things like "antivirus scanner" where it looks like an online antivirus scanner. However in some cases it's actually asking you to accept it downloading a virus into your pc. Or scan your pc with password breakers and IP configs to hack your system (usually backed up with a tracking cookie)

Worst cases are: you get hit by a Trojan that infects your registry/corrupts IRQ's or your hit by a phishing virus that gives all your banking details you may have submitted to amazon (example) and then you'll be rather annoyed when your bank account is emptied.

If you have a fairly decent antivirus of your own, it'll pick it up and delete it appropriately. My main bit of advice is to steer away from dodgy sites (Pirate Bay, Some Torrent download pages and ofc anything involving p0rN.)

Thing is, ThePirateBay is hardly a dodgy site. It is to torrents what Google is to searches. Still, I'll just go to Isohunt now if I feel the need to download something.

German? Does our friend Mutsumi consider himself a consumer worthy of nothing but the finest quality entertainment?

You'd be surprised to learn the degree to which a bit of DIY passes muster.

, and you have protection.

...always use protection. And yes, you just need a bit of savvy, I've never ever came across anything like this, and I download quite a bit of stuff. Even some dodgy stuff.

EDIT: Sorry to sound completely unsympathetic, but I'm not. Imagine the tone I say my above sentance in to be a hands-and-shoulders-and-right-cheek-slightly-raised one. Do it, and you'll see what I mean :p.
