New Guy - Which series should I start

Hi Everyone, im new to this forum so I would just like to Introduce myself, ive been into anime for about 10 years, but not actually a real fan until about 6 months ago, previously I just watched the commercial movies such as Akira, Ninja Scroll etc.

But since having more money and more time on my hands ive developed my interest far deeper. Now I buy about 5 DVD's per month and my collection is growing fast :) I hope I can fit in here :)

Just a starter question to get me warmed up, which series shall I start next, please give honest answers and reviews. Either :-

Divergence Eve
Burst Angel
Gantz (watched Vol.1 and thought it was fantastic)
Tenjho Tenge

Thanks everyone

Tough choice... although not because of excellence. I haven't seen Divergence Eve so I can't comment on that.

Personally I loved Burst Angel, but I appear to be the only on on the planet. It's a Charlie's Angels meets Bubblegum Crisis vibe with a spaghetti western taint. It's shallow, it's full of fan service, it's definitely not meant to be taken seriously. But I found it to be a lot of fun. It's your typical Gonzo futuristic sci-fi action show, with a dark conspiracy and a main character with a hidden past. Just like all the others really. But I found the characters to be really likeable, and the cliches to be charming. Also, if extras are your thing, the discs are loaded.

Tenjho Tenge is a school combat tournament show. It's like a high class Ikki Tousen, fan servicey and lots of training, posturing and expressing oneself through violence. It's fun at times, tiresome at others. It also doesn't get a proper ending.

Gantz is a hard one. I enjoy it, but I enjoy it despite its many shortcomings, not for it's excellence. The premise is awesome, but the execution is lacking. None of the characters are particularly likeable. The pacing is shot to hell, there are plenty of scenes where the characters stand around and debate when they should be doing something. But, it's sexy, edgy and pretty gory for a television show (it was edited for broadcast in Japan). And despite all the criticisms of the show that I have, it's one I'll return to before the others for a rewatch. Again, the discs come with some decent extras as well. Since you liked disc one of this, I'd say stick with Gantz and see it through.

The Gantz boxset is currently £35.93 from Asda online
Burst Angel boxset is £29.93 from Asda, although it doesn't have the new Infinity OVA
Tenjho Tenge is £35.99 from Play
The Divergence Eve volumes are a fiver each from Play

Thanks for the great feedback. I agree tehre was one point on Vol.1 of Gantz where I swear they were running from the alien for at least 10minutes haha, but it was the same shot. But as I say, really enjoyable. I'll stick to Gantz I think and maybe check out Divergence Eve beings as they're cheap and only 3 vol.'s.

I will wait for Burst Angel, I honestly think im gonna really like it, plus Tenjho Tenge has caught my interest through the trailors, but that can wait.

Oh right. That's how it got me. They use the opening sequence for the trailer, all breakdancing and cool animation right?

The series is nothing like that.

Thats Asda Price!!! ha unbelievable.

Yeah Ive heard great things about Black Lagoon. Trouble is Im watching about 5 series at once at the moment. Currently:-

Chrono Crusade
Rune Soldier
Bleach
Fullmetal Alchemist

Ok so thats 4 ha

In all honestly I love the Full Metal Panic! series and Fumoffu. I think they're brilliant, slick and funny.

But yeah, thats the only kind of mech series ive seen but alot of people dont regard FMP! as a proper mech? Is taht true?

That is true, i love FMP! as well (i really need to see FMP!: The Second Raid) but you can't really class it as a mech along the likes of Mobile Suit Gundam

I must also say you have at ermmmmmm a very interesting time in the anime industery.

If you want to watch a couple of episodes and see if there any good or not Funimation have set up there own channel here.

http://www.youtube.com/user/FUNimation
Oh wow I didn't know about that. Thanks.

They set it up about a month ago. I notice they are showing episodes 1-4 of kiddygrade and blue gender this week followed by 5-8 next week.

Are they showing entire series for free and legally? lol

My list of must watch series... ( Or at least the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. )

Azumanga Daioh

Bubblegum Crisis ( Either version, original or remake. )

Excel Saga ( Watch out though, it's a Marmite series - You either love it or hate it. )

Full Metal Panic
Full Metal Panic - FUMOFFU
Full Metal Panic - The Second Raid ( Unfortunatly only available as Region 1 )

Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex - Second Gig
Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society

Hellsing

Kiddie Grade

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi
Martian Successor Nadesico ( If you can still get it, but be warned, it ends in anticipation of a second series which was never made. )

Neon Genesis Evangelion ( Had to put this really, it's a classic. But again, it's a Marmite series. )

If you do get Divergance Eve, be warned, it's plot is very weird, it has some crappy CG in it, all the girls seem to have balloons for breast and unless you import the second series - Misaki Chronicles - you'll have no idea how it ends.

Oh, be careful watching Chrono Crusade, the story turns very dark towards the end.

Do you buy anime in boxset form? or single volumes? Im just asking because recent events have put me (and i suspect many others) off buying single volumes thats all..........but by all means buy anime.

I tend to buy single Volumes as I like the different artwork etc. The only boxset I own is the Elfen Lied boxset, the rest are all single volume.

I see well just a few pointers box sets are cheaper than buying the series in single volumes... The single volumes also take up mch more shelf space.

And be carefull when buying single volumes because recently a company realeased like the first 2 volumes of an anime then cancelled the rest.

If anyone disagrees with me feel free to say so.
