New Code Geass side story

Read this on sankaku, i'm excited being a fan of geass, it's the only mecha i enjoyed.

I think the thing is, the mecha element isn't what the show revolves around. It's character driven and just happens to have mecha. The manga doesn't have any mecha.

I mean I like mecha, and I think the mecha stuff in Geass is fantastic, but it's more about the struggle between the characters and the knightmares are just means to an end and are used more or less like tanks, rather than something like gundam where a great deal of the show depends on the mobile suits doing battle.

I think it's a pretty cool way of doing it, I hope this Akito is a cool protagonist =3

Uh, guys... isn't that how most mecha shows work?

I don't think so. Compare Geass with something like Gundam and Gurren Lagann and the mecha is key to the protagonists winning. Without the Gundams or Gurrens they are rather worthless, but CG is all about mind games and strategy, the knightmares are just elaborate pawns.

I understand where you're coming from but CG is very different from most straight mecha shows.

It's a mecha show in the same way Full Metal Panic is, the plot gets along fine without the mecha. If you take the mecha away from Gurren Lagann or Gundam, then there's not much left. Yes they're character driven too, but the focal point is the mecha element. Whereas both Geass and FMP get along fine without them as Fumoffu and the Geass manga prove.

N.b.: I feel I should say I'm not trying to start an argument here, or say that Geass is the best anime EVAR that involves mecha, I'm just saying its treatment is different from most "pure" mecha shows.

Hey, nobody's arguing here. :)

I kinda get what you're saying, and I also sorta disagree - I mean, for example, I think there are broader themes in Gundam (depending on the series). Look at something like War In The Pocket.

But I'm obliged to state that I haven't seen any Code Geass at all - what you say about it being a 'different treatment' piques my curiosity. It initially didn't look like a show I would get into at all, hence I never checked it out. But if there's something a bit more original going on than I first assumed, it might just warrant my checking it out.

Oh I agree. There are definitely broader themes in the shows, I'm not denying that, but I think the mechs tie it together.

And yeah, CG is worth a look. The best analogy (though not a perfect one) is to say it's "Death Note with added mecha" but it's not quite as simple as that.

Oh, definitely!

That's what I like about mecha anime as a sub-genre. There's actually a fair bit of diversity in the way they're employed. I like Gundam because - well, I like my big robots front and centre! But I also enjoy something like RahXephon, where the approach to the mecha is nicely alternative and takes a back seat from the story and characters.

Geass may just float my boat after all - I'm not keen on the 'Death Note' comparison, though - I'm not a fan of anything too supernatural.

It's not really supernatural, I meant more in the mind games, battle of wits sense.

And Ryo, I wouldn' hold your breath =P It could just be the franchise name to show it's linked, like Death Note Another Note had no Death Note in it.

More Gundam with Yu-Gi-Oh characters? AOTY confirmed.
Genre show in some elements superficially resemble genre progenitor shocker? Your trolling either needs to be more biting, or more insightful, or you'll never catch up to Aion. :p

i dunno, it may have geass

Akito of the ruined nation seems to emply it's a citizen or prince of a nation that was destroyed by Britannia and his rebel fight to free them

ohhhh it's Cagalli all over again

Yeah that's what I was thinking, and it may have Geass, maybe even C.C. but I suspect it may be early on in Britannia's domination of the world.
