New Anime Releases 17/06/2013

I was going to get Bakuman, but after hearing about all of the problems it has, I'm going to hope they put out a corrected version, or wait till it becomes extraordinarily cheap.

My Bakemonogatari P1 DVD order arrived today and had the incorrect discs in the box.

From MVM

Unfortunately our manufacturers packed the wrong discs into the Bakemonogatari box.
This was spotted a week before release date but some stock had already shipped to major retailers.
Even so a product recall was sent out and it shouldn't have despatched to you.

Bakemononogatari Pt 1 will now be released on 1st July with new barcode and catalogue number (MVD2324).
This is the only way to ensure bad stock does not get mixed with new good stock.

Poor MVM, that must be a nightmare to sort out. I'll put it in the defective discs thread to warn people and because I rarely get to use my green pen to describe a problem with a fix :D

Make sure the release has the product code "MVD2324", which is at the foot of the spine. If so, that's the correct version.

Last Exile - still not sure whether to buy it or not. Anyone here recommend it?

Yes, I can recommend it thoroughly.

It's a superb little steampunk / fantasy show, with some excellent story development and GORGEOUS visuals. A good example of Gonzo at their best.

The ending seems to frustrate people, though I personally don't have a problem with it. However you feel by the end of it, I imagine you'll be glad you saw it.

Bakemonogatari and Bakuman would have been definites for me...but without dubs, I'm not interested. Oh well.
Whilst I actively encourage people to avoid Khazi releases (Especially Bakuman, sounds like it's a complete mess), why the hell would you completely disregard a great show like Bakemonogatari just because it doesn't have a dub? The only good excuse for not buying it is if you are waiting for the Bluray. Unlike a lot of other shows an English dub just would not work for the Monogatari series. Can people stop being silly and buy it?

On a separate note, I don't have high hopes for Bakemonogatari sales wise. Splitting the DVD/BD release dates only hurts it more. I wouldn't be surprised if it sold like ****, knowing what the majority of UK audience is like. Unfortunately for MVM I'm not willing to double dip on this series for the BDs over two full price sets, having already paid £127 and £111 for Aniplex's Bakemono/Nisemono sets (And they were worth every penny. EVERY. PENNY.).

I'm honestly unsure about how well bakemonogatari will do for MVM, it's not a large scale show, i mean compared to quite a few other anime, it belongs to more of a niche market. Although i do believe that the very high price of aniplex USA product is definitely in MVM's favour, people are not as quick to import a show that has such a high price tag. the separation of the DVD and the BLU-RAY won't really harm the sales either, DVD sales still largely dominate and if people were really interested in getting the BD then they would most likely wait. Quite a few of mvm's releases sell poorly in comparison the manga, kaze or studio canal, so i hope bakemonogatari at least does well for them.

I actually thought it was a pretty huge steampunk/fantasy show, that had no lack of hype and a massive budget to go with it. ^^;

Thanks for the response. I can't afford it yet, so might add it to my Christmas list and let someone else get me it. I need something on there after all :D

It was their Anniversary title so got a lot of hype and budget and was well received.

It was one of, if not the best selling TV anime in Japan in recent years.

He's still correct. The anime buying market is not the same in Japan as it is in the West, and the monogatari series is nothing if not niche over here, imo. It is one of the most otaku-focused series I can think of.

edit: whoa, GirlPan.

I'm waiting for Bakemonogatari's blu-ray release, but I admit that I'm not optimistic about it selling well here either. I mean, the title itself "Bakemonogatari" will probably disconnect a lot of the casual audience from the get-go, due to it well...being long and Japanese. I feel that it might have had more of a chance if the title was translated (although not directly because, as much as I would like to see Ghost Stories released here, it isn't that).

I wonder about that; for every person a translated title attracts, there have to be some who can no longer find it and don't realise it came out. I don't think I've ever bought/not bought a title on the basis of its title, especially when so many great series have names which make no sense when a person is flipping through a DVD rack. But I have missed out on buying western manga before when they've changed the title and I haven't realised something was licensed.

(Not saying you're wrong, just that translated titles can sometimes be problematic.)

Yup, I have had the same issue come up more than once where I didn't even think a series was licensed over here because I'd never seen it under a name I recognized.

A distributor could always add the Japanese title as a tag for online retailers. For example, if I go on Amazon and search "Sora no Woto", the first result is "Sound of the Sky" or have it as a subtitle, such as "[Translated Title]: Bakemonogatari", just with the translated title being larger on the cover (For example, Aniplex USA's "Oreimo" DVDs have Oreimo as the title, but the full title on the top of the cover).
