New Anime Releases - 04/10/2015

Already own Railgun Blu-Ray from Funimation.
Jojo's arrived yesterday.
Tokyo Ghoul arrived a few weeks back from AlltheAnime.

Magi I will pick up when it drops in price a bit.
Captain Earth I may get as a complete collection.

No interest in YuGiOh

Nothing for me this week.

I'll try Index at some point and if I like it will get Railgun.
I'll get Ghoul at some point, though it will probably be a standard edition by then.
I might get Yu-Gi-Oh sometime, if only for nostalgia's sake.
Don't care about the rest.

Have A Certain Scientific Railgun Blu-ray pre-ordered at UP1.

Will pick up the Captain Earth Blu-rays at a later date.

Received Tokyo Ghoul CE Blu-ray a couple of weeks ago.

Not interested in anything else.

Received my copy of Tokyo Ghoul last week.
Already have Funi's Railgun BD and I'm not interested in YGO or Captain Earth.
I am interested in Magi but >Khazi. I'm hoping AniplexUSA releases it on BD at some point.

I also really want Jojo but there's so many things wrong with the release that it feels like buying it would be doing a complete disservice to anime buyers in general. Warner have shown that they just don't get the anime release format. Buying this cheap, shoddy, borderline bootleg DVD set missing something as basic as a proper translation for the Japanese track (which already exists might I add) sends the message that this sort of release is okay, and I'm not okay with supporting that.

Warner Bros. don't see this as an anime release, to them this is no different than Scooby-Doo Meets Kiss. In fact I'd argue we're quite lucky they didn't pull an Adventure Time and actively pursue a lower rating by cutting/dropping episodes. And to be honest, no matter what anime fans do, it will probably be in the top selling releases of the year.

As I've said, the best solution for us as anime fans is to wait until the US release drops in price (I'd suggest it'll probably be on sale on Black Friday), import it and then accidentally remux Crunchyroll's subtitles in for the Japanese language track.

Let's be honest here too - hundreds of people will buy this DVD and not give a crap about the quality issues. We're the hardcore that care about that stuff. Just as there's probably people out there that have been buying Manga's Naruto DVDs since 2006 and probably only ever watch it dubbed, there'll be people who see this and just think it's a bargain.

Also, the U.S. Release is identical, no? So not sure where the value would come there? Well, aside from the PAL speedup I suppose.

PAL speed-up was the big one for me. I'm used to hearing JoJo's in a certain way, it would probably do my nut in to hear it sped up, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the video quality/compression complaints were introduced from the PAL speed-up process. Also, all of the less than legitimate subtitle sources will be synced to the NTSC version, so it would be a lot harder to create a "fixed" version of the release.

The one other place the release is not identical is in the price. The US release is more than double the price of the UK version and that's before you add shipping and tax in, hence the "waiting for a sale" part of the plan.

Not getting Railgun because I didn't enjoy Index.
As I understand it, Railgun is a bit different to Index. Depending on what you didn't like about Index, you might find Railgun more enjoyable. I don't know how likely that is though, it might be worth checking some reviews to see what the differences are likely to be.

I'll be getting Railgun but I probably won't be getting any of the other releases (for now, at least).

I was going to get Tokyo Ghoul but I don't have a lot of room in my budget just now so I decided to leave it, it wasn't a high priority anyway so I may just wait for a standard edition or not bother.

I'm interested in Magi but the whole Kaze thing is kind of annoying. I might pick it up later if it's not too bad a release.

I haven't tried any JoJo yet and it doesn't look like this release would be a good place to start. I might try it on Crunchyroll at some point but I do have a pretty big backlog as it is and it's a long show so it's tough to decide when to try and fit it in. Maybe it's better to not have watched it since the options for a good release are limited anyway.

Regrettably what I disliked about Index was 'everything' - I didn't like a single character. So I doubt that Railgun could save it for me even if it has a considerably better set of theme songs :(

(I was pretty disappointed since the series had a great reputation and I bought the BD sets. Oh well.)

There is so much anime out there that you cannot be expected to like everything regardless of quality. For my sins I have watched one episode each of Gankutsouo and Bakemonogatari. I did not really enjoy them so I have not watched any more of either of them.

The JoJo cover makes all the others on the page look amateur. Very tempted to buy on the strength of that alone. Yu Gi isn't too shabby either, but Yu Gi can never look shabby, probably in the top 3 most stylish anime of all time for me,

Tokyo Ghoul. Which outside of the US One Piece volumes I have been getting is the first anime I've purchased in well over six months. This is down to there being so little of interest to me that has been released over here this year.
