Name anime series/movies with next to no fan-service

Ok I was watching This video by giggeuk http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=5xTKO4EhapQ this guys videos are freaking LOOL funny, anyways if youv seen the video you know what im going to talk about.

Fan service is talking over more and more anime which is very distracting at times and it annoys me alot when a good story gets interrupted by fan service. And like he says in the video trying to get others and newbies in to more anime is kinda hard because fan service anime really doesn't put you in a dignified position unless the nudity is apart of the series like basilisk,* so basically I'm asking you all to name anime with out fan service or has a lil bit,

If it's been named by others don't put it down

Please name as many anime with next to no fan servies, unless it's part of the story like basilisk, * preferably with a good story*

Giant robo
Romeo x Juliet
Baccano
Moribito
Death note
Trigun
cowboy bepop

This threads a good idea if you looking for something for new people

P.S no moe either

I'd agree with Death Note and Trigun. Misa has a few moments, but not many, and they're generally not played up, and while Vash lusts after a few women, the only instance I'd quantify as fanservice would be when he pops the buttons off Dominique the Cyclops' shirt.

I'd say "Paranoia Agent" has none pretty much. There's one instance of nudity, but not played for fanservice and one of a girl undressing which is so far beyond not being fanservice that if you think it is then I have no idea what to say to you.

Oh, I suppose there's also a couple of prostitute scenes, but again they're not really played as fanservice. I guess it's important what constitutes fanservice. Lingering butt shots with no nudity is still fanservice, but not all nudity is fanservice, so it's worth remembering that.

I don't recall any fanservice in "Bakuman" and there's none in "Tokyo Godfathers" or "Millennium Actress", I think.

It's probably not a very encouraging thing to say, but if you look up sales charts the things lingering right at the bottom which don't sell well are generally also the same series which don't have much/any fan service. There are a few exceptions, such as series with terrible fan service.

I'm assuming your definition of fan service is strictly sticking to saucy content and not fan service in a broader sense. Most series aimed (accidentally or intentionally) at female viewers tends to be extremely low on visual fan service for obvious reasons.

Hmm, if I start suggesting specific titles there's a lot of crossover with the "anime for my mum" thread.

R

Your a female and you like fan service if I remember right?

Well technically no, the thing is that if you watched the video and youv thought about how fan service has effected anime so much.

You cant even watch a anime without fan service being present, oki like fan service but if I'm watch a series with a good good story and I'm enjoying this series then out of nowhere there a naked chick or a hot hunk for the girls, this has happened to me before, I was enjoying a few series before and then out of no where boobs, inside I was *yay* but at the same time I was *oh come on was there any need for that* ok fine if nudity is part of the series then fine but if it's there just for just being there for the fans then it gets annoying.

Come on RUI you know what I'm talking about,
I just want to name all the anime that has next to no fan service or moe, nothings wrong with fan service or moe

I didn't watch the video beyond the screen where it told me I had to verify my age. I'm not keen on YouTube.

If you think about it, the fan service in a series aimed at females and one aimed at guys is worlds apart. That's not because girls aren't perverts too (they most certainly are); it's just because a picture of guys bending over in loincloths isn't as universally appealing as a cute girl bouncing around in a skimpy swimsuit. It seems to be true that service aimed at males is more direct and visual in nature.

Service aimed at girls tends to be silly stuff like guys embracing (fully clothed is fine), or pressing someone against a wall, or a butler helping his master do up a tie, or making a male character dress in drag. While they all launch their fair share of torrid fanfiction spin-offs, it's hard to say that those things can be classed as nudity. Therefore, if you're talking about saucy content, I stand by my point that female-orientated anime will usually safely pass the test since nudity or sexual content tends to be plot-related. If I think about it, most relatively detailed male nudity in anime is in series aimed at men, or shows which appeal to both sexes.

It's true that I'm female and watch blokey fan service shows, but they're still aimed at men regardless of my own personal perversion ;p

(Someone is going to bring up FREE!, but as it doesn't yet exist we can't say for sure how lewd it's going to be!)

Nothing wrong with being a perv either your a boy or a girl and the fan service is fine. And plot related nudity is fine too.

By the way if ya don't mind answering this, what's your preferable fan service in both genders, I would assume it would be something like black butler and for the other Id say queens blade,

Anyways do you get pissed off when there's unnecessary fan servies. Give the video a look when you get chance.

My two cents on it is

You know HOTD I thought the fan service mixed well with this series because of-

1 blood and violence
2 guns and swords
3 zombie and survival
4 chicks and boobs

This series is 100% perfect it's everything a hard core gore fan wants babes with blood and surviving attacks from zombies and it is awesome * praying for season 2 *

I wish FREE! hadn't already been brought up :( I knew I shouldn't have done it, but I went and typed FREE! anime into google images..it's already too lewd for me, and unfortunately the search also threw up some seemingly completely unrelated anime images of a much much worse lewd content. I really hope no one ever sees my internet history and gets the wrong idea about me...

Service aimed at girls tends to be silly stuff like guys embracing (fully clothed is fine), or pressing someone against a wall

Its hard to actually categorize this stuff as "fan-service" isn't it though? My definition of fan service is something that has no artistic value and is included for the sole purpose of titillating a specific demographic in order to increase profits. Something that is inherently gratuitous, and often incongruous with the rest of the show. A prime example of this being Makoto from SAC. But your examples (aside from the Butler one maybe :s) would seem hard to place in that category for me, as they could equally be a legitimate part of the story. Unless there's a way to gratuitously embrace

I don't consider stuff that's in things like High school of the Dead or whatever to be fan service, as those shows' sole appeal seems to be sexual titillation of some kind. So it's pretty much just soft porn.

If say someone came along and said to you that someone told them that all anime is porn or weird naked Chinese girls in them but said they wasn't, which 10- 20 anime would you choose * with dignity* for them to watch,

And you wouldnt show a friend or a family member a fan service show like heavens lost property or HOTD or anything like that would ya, it's about the story at the end of the day and the eye candy is a bonus

Just to say again I'm a fan of fan service but id lik to watch a anime without the fan service once and a while.

If someone came up to me saying that I'd more than likely sigh and decide not to talk to them in the first place. If it was someone I had to be nice to against my will I'd probably start with the family-friendly movies people were listing in the other thread, though.

I like fan service, but I haven't found it especially difficult to avoid it when needed (which is pretty much never).

I guess it depends on how strict you are with the definition.

Most highschool based series feature girls depicted in the zettai ryouiki style but is this enough to be classed as fan service? Angelic Layer springs to mind in which the lead character is 12 and dresses like this but I'd never class that as a FS series or in any way dubious.

Looking at my own collection it's surprising how few I'd actually say were FS maybe because I've been collecting for 10 years or so and FS was less prevelant in older series that were released over here?

Anyway assuming we're talking boobs, panties and nudity and that a little bit of jiggling isn't sufficient and not including extras, Mai-Hime, then as a subset from my series I'd say:

Definitely contain FS:

Burst Angel
Corpse Princess
Dirty Pair Flash
Elfen Lied
Gun Sword
H.O.T.D
Ikki Tousen
Najica Blitz Tactics
Negima Spring & Summer but not the main series 1&2
Project A-Ko
Samurai Girls
Strike Witches
Tenjho Tenge
This Ugly Yet beautiful World

Most of the rest of my list I wouldn't class as FS but rather than list all of them these are some examples that have none:

Angelic Layer
Azumanga Daioh
Bamboo Blade
Claymore
Ergo Proxy
Ghost Hunt
Gunslinger Girls
Haibane Renmei
Kino's Journey
K-ON!
Last Exile
Mushi-Shi
Noein
Noir
Otogi Zoshi
Rozen Maiden
SE Lain
Witch Hunter Robin
xxxHOLIC

Perhaps surprisingly I wouldn't class Negima as FS, other than the OVAs, as despite its reputation there's only a very small amount in series 1 and next to none series 2.

Ergo Proxy
It does have Re-l changing and taking a shower in the first episode.

Haibane Renmei
Rakka is naked in the OP. While it is "innocent" nudity (I never understood why in the actual show she was "born" in a smock) if you equate fanservice with flesh, it may still be a problem.

Again, not "fanservice" per se, but Lain is nude in the ED and there's a scene of Alice masturbating.

Witch Hunter Robin
Robin sleeps in the nude. They don't show much as a recall, but enough to know that this is a fact.

Never got more than a few episodes into the second series.
The first series was aired on TV Tokyo which frowns on fanservice. IIRC there were two brief pantyshots added for the DVDs and definition was added to the closeup of Asuna's kuma pantsu (which was just a pink screen with a bear in the middle for the TV version).

Ok I didn't include opening/end sequences and the Arisu scene in Lain is a key part of the plot as is Re-l being in the shower in Ergo Proxy. Robin sleeps in the nude but you don't see anything so that's not a problem I think.

As I say it depends on what you regard as fan service. If you're including any nudity at all then:

In Totoro, one of the best family animes made, there's the bathing sequence where we have the father in the tub with his 2 daughters which is in no way offensive.
In Claymore Clare is briefly shown in just pants but it's not sexual.
How many magical girl transformation sequences have nudity? Quite a few I think.

Negima series1 has only 2 sequences I would raise an eyebrow at. The obligatory communal bathing/comparing vital statistics episode and the let's make a homepage episode which takes it a little close to the edge given the ages of the characters. Other than that apart from the pink panties shot there's no FS at all as I remember. Negima in the barrel with Kaede which while on the face of it may seem odd was more like brother and sister than anything inappropriate.

Negima series2. I really didn't like the 1st disk but if you give it a chance then it's a wonderful series. It's more adult in its humour than series1, not in a vulgar way, and once you get past the fast that it's very different to series1 then for me it's much better. I've heard the English dub is awful but as I watch subs I can't comment on that.

I view FS as being there specifically as titilation rather than as any attempt to pretend it's part of the plot :)

@Shiroi

The thing is if it's it's part of the story then fine like basilisk Or rin, and I don't think those are classed as fan service, I mean yeah you have a bit of a shirt off or a bit of a panty shot or someone's in the bath,

Romeo x juliet Juliet is in the bath but we don't see anything you get what I'm getting at,

Doesn't hurt to be fully informed. If one was using the list to pick, say, something non fanservice-ey to Watch with Mother then nudity of kids may be out entirely.

Magical Girl transformation sequences depend on the title and who it is aimed at. Puni Puni Poemy is a different kettle of fish to Sailor Moon, and I find it hard to view the nudey bit of the Madoka OP as being 'innocent' give the target audience and, well, Shinbo.

This is actually a good question. I think fanservice is perceived differently for individual differences though.

Rose of Versailles (so far, I've only watched five episodes)
Oniisama e - There is a bath scene but it's not done in a fanservice way
Aura Battler Dunbine - As far as I can remember
Millennium Actress

Strictly speaking, there is that (non-explicit) nude shot of Oscar in the opening. I wouldn't call it fan-service, but looking back over what else has come up in the thread, I guess it's still worth mentioning.
