My thoughts on Outlaw Star

sanji no 1

Vampire Ninja
Outlaw Star
4/10
(spoilers)
Now i know alot of you haters are gonna be like: "WHAT!?!?! OUTLAW STAR A 4/10!?!?! DIE!!! YOUR NOT A TRUE ANIME FAN BLAH BLAH BLAH" Just hear me out. And this is my personal oppinion.

I was so hyped up for this show! i even pre orderd it which i rarely do for anime DVDs. I had heard how good it is and had never watched it back when it was on cartoon network. Only to find out it was BOOOOOOOOOORING!!!

I didnt like ANY of the characters. They had little to no back story at all. and this made them boring for me. Especially the samurai woman. Plus some of them were pointless! I mean, who was that gwen khan guy? he kept popping up in the series and at the end he just kind of vanished! Gene Starwind is one of the worst main characters ive seen. he had no pernoality that made made him stand out to other anime characters like Spike Spiegel. I cared more about the Mcdougal brothers more than him!

The story didnt pick up untill the last disc in the boxset, which is when they get to they galactic layline or whatever. Before all that they were doing nothing!! they were just wondering around!

The animation, compared with other of sunrises work, was average. sometimes it was a bit choppy and the characters were badly drawn. I only complain about the animation because i had heard it was great. No it wasnt!!! I admit sometimes it was pretty good, most times it wasnt.

Despite all this, i admit there was some decent action, especially towards the end.

Overall, i thought it was dull and boring. Plus i didnt like a single character! I realize some of you may like the show, and i apologize. But i just couldnt get into this show.

A huge disappointment

Oh sorry mate. Not trying to put you off. You might like it more than me.

Err.. na it didnt seem much like trigun to me. However it has a slight western feel to it like trigun. Plus Gene Starwind has a big gun like vash has.

I thought Bebop was the one that gets praised for animation? Also, this should be in that anime rating thread dude.

I really hope this isn't true, I've been rather looking forward to getting this. Is it not Trigun-ish at all?

I really enjoyed it; but it seems we may have differening tastes (What with Confessions n all ;) )

when i was younger it felt like it was a long series

See I was in a slightly different situation.

I watched it, decided it was rubbish (I also gave it 4/10). A year or so later I discovered, to my surprise, that a lot of people really liked it and it had a bit of hype.

Honestly I think my most major issue was the plot. It was one of those series I felt pretended to have a plot, whilst actually being episodic.

Samurai Champloo, so far (I'm on episode 18 ), has also been guilty of this.

I hate to ask this, but is there any chance of a little more effort regarding grammar and punctuation? You're generating a lot of discussion, which is great. But I'm finding myself incredible put off reading a lot of the topics because of your posting style.

It's a personal favourite of mine, but that could be because I loved watching it on CNX all those years ago. I'll be picking up the boxset next week, when I get paid.

The nostalgia factor does seem to play a role in Outlaw Star's enduring popularity. I watched it fairly recently and, eh, it was fun but certainly nothing exceptional.

I won't have nobody dissing Samurai Champloo, though. That's just not on.

who'd diss Samurai Champlo its a fun series

No love for the theme tune yet? I think it may have been the best part of the show. Actually, I quite like the style of the art too.

I've never really liked Outlaw Star, but I've also never liked Trigun, so take that as you will :)

We have the R1s of both. And the CD single for the Outlaw Star opening, of course >_>;

Oh, they exist. But you don't hear much from them because they're quickly rounded up and held in a secure location.

Outlaw Star's opening is cool, yeah, and I like the art style too. Problem is the animation quality of the show itself is... variable, shall we say. And while we're on the subject, what's up with the ending? I actually like the song but the tone of the music and visuals always seemed so incongruous after spending 25 minutes following the crazy adventures of a space pervert and his band of misfits.

Ah yeah, I'd completely forgotten what the ED was like. The illustrations look more like the cover for a book to me, so I originally thought they were a reference back to a source novel, but apparently the light novels only came after the anime.

Some of the staff must have been yearning to make a more serious show...

The ED felt really out of place I agree, but it's a lovely song to put on for background music while drawing or whatnot.

Uhhm Outlaw Star was the first anime I ever watched and I'll always love it, if not just for that. Although I can't remember there ever being a weak point in the anime when it came to animation, it was all pretty solid. Also I thought Gene, Jim and Aisha were all pretty likeable, and the villains were badass ('cept Harry Mcdougal)

It'll always be something I would recommend anyway
