My concerns for the 'Anime Series'

And I'm talking about the current ones that are 'being' licensed, already are for about a year and the one that are coming out in Japan.

The reason however I'm being concerned is that my sudden 'interest' in anime is starting to wane. Mostly in the series department... Every series I turn to, wherever it's Fansub... or sometimes DVD, I can't help myself to absorb myself into it.

I'd even traded in my 2 last exile DVD because all they did was gathering dust. It was an excellent anime, but I couldn't watch it over and over again. But most of the anime that is coming from Japan are utter crap.

Soul Eater, a good anime imo, already lost my interest ages ago. Good start with humour, but quickly switches me off. I dunno if I can actually have the patience to watch a series to the end. Bleach is definitley one example that really lost my patience ages ago... 'especially' when the Fillers kick in.

But OVA, short series and some films managed to keep me interested and become attached to my brain for a long time. 'The girl who leapt through time' is one that I will remember for a long time. Even now I am becoming more interested in 'short series' and 'OVA' than the main series. 5 centimeter per second is one that grabbing my interest...

I dunno... But I'm starting to realise that 'Anime' is showing it's true colours, well the modern one that's being released in Japan as we know. It's basically crap, uninspiring and is ruining 'what' made it great in the first place. All I can see is uninspiring stories, slutty characters, generic characters and sometimes... unappealing animation.

I think from now on, I'm sticking to the chosen three...

Maybe you just need to take a break for a while and then just come back to some series you thought had potential. Lots of people tend to burn themselves out by simply watching too much and then they start to lose interest in the entire medium for some odd reason.

To be honest I haven't really had the time or the patience to sit through a whole series lately and finding that watching the odd movie or more episodic series now and then is a lot more enjoyable than feeling I have to keep up with an ongoing plot of the typical anime for 26 episodes or so.

That's the problem though...

I 'haven't' watched that much anime compared to most of the people on the site. In my time on anime UK news, I have watched at least... 14 anime.

Less compared to all the anime fan nuts here and they still have love for the anime medium. Me on the other hand, is becoming rather concerned that I'm losing interest everyday.

I understand what your saying. I've given up on a few series and lost potential interest in series and i'm consistently looking out for my shorts, OVAs and films. The same with manga though. Longer series have really lost my interest and i'm more interested in shorter and more original mangas.

Its about what takes your fancy at the moment though i suppose. I've got the Excell Saga series on my shelf but i've not been in the mood to watch it since i bourght it. I've been taking a lot more notice to films.

Don't think it's anime that's changing, more that one you and you expecations are changing, and that yo have gotten over the hump.
When most people start watching anime one of the things that attracts a lot of people is that it is new and different from anything they have seen before. And you lap the stuff up. After a while you get to know they tropes, the cliche's and the standard plots and twists. While this knowledge can help you understand more of certain aspects of the shows, it does wear away at the newness and shineyness of anime. Shows you may have enjoyed seem dull and new shows seem just bad. This doesn't mean all anime is bad just that you are getting more choosy and more critical of shows. Also remeber for all the good shows from the past you remeber there where hundreds if not thousands of mediorce and crap ones you either don't remember or have never even heard about.
Advice to help you get over this hump? Take a break from anime, don't give it up, but go off and watch western shows and moives, games. Or any media that isn't Japanese. Try Bollywood (differnent from ANYTHING western or eastern). Also try stuff you may have dismissed due to age, genre etc. Gave a show from 80's a shot (normally don't give older anime much thought) and think I have found the one of the best anime going.

I read the MVM guy said he was suprized by the high sales figures of FLCL....and that happens to be a 6 episode. Afro samurai made a shed load of money for funimation and thats 5 episodes. So maybe people like shorter series or movies I dunno.

Well it's not a big deal really. Just take a break like I said and come back with a fresh perspective at some point in the future when you feel like it. You don't have to watch anime and after all there's plenty of other types of entertainment out there. :p

I took a break for about two months (as in I haven't watched it)

I guess I need a longer break. But other than that, thanks for the advices. I just watch more Family Guy >.>

I remember hitting this point after about a year of working on AUKN. I wanted to watch everything being released in the UK, but ended up feeling so jaded that I nearly quit. As people have suggested above, best thing to do is to take a break from anime for few weeks. hopeful_monster has some good advise on trying to watch some more live action movies or taking a look at an American TV series (I recommend The Wire, or may be Battlestar Galactica), that often works for me. Also, try to avoid constantly watching anime that's repetitive, I mean, I love watching anime like One Piece, Soul Eater and Naruto, but I can't take one after the other, it just gets predictable. Besides, there's some great, unique, different anime out there, you just need to look beyond what's popular.

Judging from that above message, you've been trying to watch too much shonen anime like Bleach and Soul Eater, yet seem to be enjoying slice of life stuff like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. With that in mind, if you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend you have a look at Honey & Clover, which is a wonderful slice of life anime TV series much like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Martin seemed to love Eve no Jikan, which is often compared to 5 centimeter per second. Nodame Cantabile is very good too. Only problem is that most of this slice of life stuff isn't often released outside of Japan.

American TV is exactly what's distracted me lately. I haven't been watching that much anime. I do think its happened for the good and the bad, though.

(...I can't write this post, This is probably my fifth time and I can't find the write words to say what I want to say so I won't say any more...)

over the last 3/4 months ive fallen out of anime completely. I dont know whats in, whats out, whats cool. i've got a bunch (and i mean a bunch) of dvds out of my own personal collection to watch but i'm not going to. i would rather wait until i actually want to watch something rather than watching it for the hell of it.

I used to do that, which is probably the reason i have seen some jaw droppingly crap series since i picked anime up again last year. I guess my standards have went up with watching shows like Black Lagoon, Ergo Proxy etc from 2006. Those set the bar really high and now, when i watch a crap show, i feel like im wasting my time.

I ran an anime society, I reviewed for a website, I wrote articles for conbooks, and I downloaded or bought as much as I could.....then I got anime burnout. For 18 months I watched almost nothing. Largely because nothing interested me any more, and I got tired of the shows I was watching (Believe me, dumping Naruto after 240 eps was a bit disheartening).

After 18 months I decided "Oh sod it, might as well finish Black Lagoon. I've already downloaded it, so what the hell". From then on I've slowly eased myself back in. I'm not as fanatical as I was, and frankly I'm more likely to pick up a classic title than a new one, but by being very choosy with what I watch I find I'm really enjoying it again.

So yeah, we all get burnout, it's mainly from overwatching, overanalysing, and talking too much about anime...there's only so much the brain can take before it goes "No, not doing that any more".

I used to care what was hot and what wasn't....not so much now. I generally just go on what one or two select friends tell me about, and maybe the odd retro unlicenced thing.

I can't really add much more than the sound advice already given apart from reiterating the fact that you're not alone. I'd recommend checking out other OAVs or movies by the same staff or with a similar theme or 'feel' (try something like Only Yesterday, or one of the movies by Satoshi Kon perhaps) and avoid longer TV shows.

Burnout happens to us all, but something will turn up at the most surprising times - I was all for giving up on new fansubbed shows until I stumbled on Eve no Jikan and got back into Macross Frontier...and now I can remember what made me enjoy this stuff in the first place.

Don't feel entirely put off, but don't feel compelled to completely immerse yourself in it either. I think you'll find most people here are into other interests as well as anime anyway so maybe spending more time gaming, playing sports or watching other kinds of TV will give you a well-needed but temporary break.

Sorry, what exactly is a "Slice of life" anime??
animes based on life experiences such as whisper of the heart, only yesterday and many others... these are the ones I remember from the top of my head, both ghibli.
I don't think you would enjoy any slice of life, based on your list of likes...

OT - I've felt burnt out of games as of late. I'm a guy who spent more than 60 hours playing a game non-stop and I gave up on most of it. Currently, I'm dragging to finish some pretty easy games and I've also noticed that I'm getting into the casual gaming more and more.

And also, you're not supposed to like everything as well... maybe you will find one you enjoy in another year or maybe it will pick your attention again in a month....
