As the title says I'd like recommondations for a reliable and reasonably priced multi-region blu ray player. Went to use mine tonight and it just won't turn on. Tried unplugging and then plugging it back in and nothing.

I'm not sure what to recommend, but wanted to offer my commiserations, that sucks, and I hope you find a good replacement!

Of the two I have I'd say the better is the Sony BDP-17000, which I bought modded for all region playback in 2021, it's never refused to play anything and has a decently uncomplicated remote, because it is modded you can't connect to the internet on it, and I can't comment on current pricing, mine was £139, might help others in making recommendations if you give a price range?

I purchased a multi-region player just last year. Based on my research, Panasonic players are generally seen as the more reliable player compared to a Sony player (not to say that the Sony players aren't good, but I've read a number of cases where people have experienced freezes and skips on certain Sony models with some discs).
I ended up going for a Panasonic DMP-BDT180EB from The Perfect Signal, which was £169 (brand new). There are cheaper models, and I think the cheapest your bog standard multi-region Blu-ray player will run you is around £130-£170.
Are you needing one that will play 4K discs too? If so, the Panasonic DP-UB450 is probably the best value for your money.

Had a Toshiba which was software modded. Ultimately got tired of having to go through multiple steps every time I wanted to change region.
Followed that up with an ICOS chipped Sony which served me well for years until it started disagreeing with my HDMI switch.
Using an ICOS LG model now and I miss the Sony. The range of the remote is pitiful and I don't get along with it. Functionally the player is perfectly fine but I can't recommend it.
As for recommendations I'd say Sony or Panasonic and I'd check out mrmdvd.com though TPS is decent enough too.

Not fussed about 4K as the only 4K disc I have are UK bought ones and I have my PS5 for that.
The one I currently have is an LG one I got from Amazon about 5 years ago.

I also use the Sony BDP-S1700, but I bought two players, both a US and UK model. This solution isn't for everyone as not everyone would want two players, but in terms of cost it can be the same or less than what the region-modded players cost, and there's never any question that it won't work with some disc or that a firmware update will mess with a region modification (though these days these players aren't getting new updates anyway).
There is a new version of the BDP-S1700 coming out in a month or so. All it appears to change is the removal of all the streaming apps, and in conjunction with that, no more giant NETFLIX button on the remote that is far too easy to accidentally press when intending to do something else.

If you can't trust a company called Multi Region Magic to sell decent Multi-Region players then I don't think you can trust anything. They are selling Sony models on there website too.

That's the model I bought from them at the start of the year and I've been very happy with it.
Panasonic players are very solid - I have the UB820 which I purchased from a TPS.
