Walt Disney Company said Monday it has agreed to buy Marvel Entertainment, the storied comic book company that owns the rights to such popular characters as Spider-Man and and the Fantastic Four, in a cash and stock deal it valued at $4 billion. The deal comes more than 10 years after Marvel was at the center of a bruising and highly public takeover battle between two feisty financiers.

Shareholders at Marvel will need to approve the transaction, which boards of directors at both companies have already approved.

"We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation," Robert Iger, Disney's chief executive, said in a statement announcing the deal.

"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Ike Perlmutter, Marvel's chief executive officer. "This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world."

Disney owns ABC (and ESPN) so long as it doesn't have the proper kid-friendly Walt Disney logo on, it's fine to do what it wants. All this will mean is the money goes into a different account, and hopefully, some more exposure. Could do with some more cartoons and theme park rides.

I'm curious what they are going to do Universal's Marvel Super-Hero Island (in Florida) now that Disney owns it. I'm sure Disney would rather they would stick it in Hollywood Studies.

disney owns miramax... the company that releases tarantino movies, so im guessing as long as the actual name disney isnt attached and it makes money they're cool with it.

Ditto.
I don't beleive Disney will do more than signing the checks or collecting the profits.

Good thing is that now they can sign bigger checks. I just hope they can get anywhere near what DC is doing with Vertigo.

Erm, wow.
I just hope Disney dont start throwing orders over the Marvel staff, as their character styles differ a lot. Disney brings good characters for the younger audience, but Marvel creates superheros that are good for teens/young adults.

I just dont want a Kim Possible side cast being drawn in a Cpt America-esk bodysuit and then making the atmosphere totally dull.

I might aswell sell my soul considering everything else is becoming property of Disney!

Hopefully they'll leave each other alone....their styles are greatly different.
 
And the CGI animal rescue movies are made by a company Disney bought out (Pixar) rather than by Disney Studios.

And on a slight tangent to Kezwick_Osaka; have you heard about the new Dennis The Menace cartoon to be shown on CBBC? From what i've heard, it sounds terrible. They have removed most of the character from Dennis to make him "PC".
 
Well you know, no more violent comics for us then :(. Bye Bye Punisher, you weren't a very good game port..or movie port but you where still en epic character
 
Hasn't the Disney for Marvel scenerio been going for a loong time? I doubt anything will change tbh. Disney wouldn't want Marvel just to change it. It's just something else to stamp their ever increasinng empire name on. If they do change it, for the worse... then I ain't pulling no punches, now matter how much he squeals! Mickey's going down!!
