Manhunt 2 - BANNED

The BBFC has taken another step in banning games instead of violent films, this time its Manhunt 2. However it is only illegal for it to be sold in the UK so you can still import it as its not illegal to own.

Below is taken from Yahoo

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rejected Manhunt 2 on the grounds of its "casual sadism" and "unrelenting focus on stalking and brutal slaying".

Campaigners welcomed the BBFC's decision to ban the sequel to the violent video game Manhunt, which was blamed for the murder of a 14-year-old schoolboy.

The ruling - making Manhunt 2 the first video game to be refused a British classification in a decade - means the game cannot be legally supplied anywhere in the UK. But it will not be illegal to possess a copy and in theory people will be able to buy the game abroad.

BBFC director David Cooke said: "Rejecting a work is a very serious action and one which we do not take lightly. Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board's published guidelines."

The original Manhunt game was given an 18 classification in 2003 and was "at the very top end of what the Board judged to be acceptable at that category", he said.

Rockstar Games, creator of Manhunt 2 for the PS2 and Nintendo Wii consoles, said it "emphatically disagrees" with the decision. The company, which has six weeks to appeal against the decision, stressed the game was not aimed at children.

In a statement Rockstar said: "While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision."

The original Manhunt game caused huge controversy and was blamed for the killing of Stefan Pakeerah, who was stabbed and beaten to death in Leicester in February 2004.

That is just plain funny.
What a stupid decision.
I mean come one, some of the movies that can be bought and there banning this.
Thats what age ratings are for.
And I dont give a damn if Im told kids play games they shouldint.
Thats their stupid parents being completely ignorant.
Its not like kids dont get their hands on movies they shouldint watch. But that wont stop movies being released.

Yes,Im ranting a bit but holy crap this is possibly the stupidist thing Ive ever heard.

Thats because

This is why we need region free gaming, then no one will care what the BBFC decrees as we'll be able to import all our 'must haves' without them ruining our fun.

Also the bans just make people wanna buy it, look what happened after they made that huge fuss about Manhunt and stores pulled the games off the shelves, copies were being sold on ebay for over £40 as people wanted it so badly.

If anything I am seeig a business opportunity, importing manhunt 2 and selling it on ebay for a fortune

Wow how idiotic can people get its a game for gods sake. Kids shouldnt be playing games that are rated 18 anyway. There are movies out there that are way worse than manhunt and they havent been banned.

I have no problems with it. The game obviously had extremely grizzly stuff. The BBFC are probably well aware that parents think little of game ratings. And there have been plenty of banned movies.

If anything, it'll keep the Daily Mail of the industry's back.

Basically, I ain't complaining... Because I am against most rockstar games anyhow...

So wahoo, Rockstar can get screwed now. But this is getting ridicolous, Films have no problem whatsoever, while Games get the hassle, just because it is interactive

But wahey *Happy that Rockstar is getting screwed because of Manhunt not being available in most of the world*

finally...a wii game i was looking forward to purchase after its release date of games (i.e Zelda...and..err..thats it ), and it gets banned.....man this pisses me off.

also why is Nintendo so F*****G slow in release PAL games...stupid PAL language -_- i mean the language in the UK is english, so why should we suffer because the rrest of europe has to get translated?...hmmm...they should treat each area individually imo. i want my Super Paper Mario dammit...

Well... considering all the hassle over the first one, I'm not exactly surprised by the news. I never wanted to play it, but I still think the decision to ban it was stupid.

I think the BBFC are pretty sensible. There game must have been way over the top.

Actually from what I've read about it in various mags its nothing like the first one which concentrated on videos grim and gory deaths. This one is more like a mystery horror where you play through the game figuring out how you ended up in an asylum. Tru the action still has the gore but it fluctuates between close kills which from what i have seen resemble Hitman rather than the original Manhunt and full action gun fights we'd expect to see in 1st person shooters like Farcry or doom.

LAWL, read about this earlier; how pathetic can people get.

Was actually going to purchase this game. Oh well; too much hassle importing a game like this anyhow.

Most likely won't play the game, however, I agree it is a bit silly to refuse a game people have a choice to buy.

I've heard Detal have released a Freeloader for the Wii which will play any region game, infact I've had one for my Gamecube couple year back was great playing Japanese Imports.

Still you shouldn't have to go through that trouble just to play a game just for fun? Why doesn't Rockstar rename the game & re-submit, I'm sure enough the BBFC just based it off the name of the game & rejected it.

On their site it lists what they saw:

Just under 35 minutes which ain't a lot! If it's just 35 minutes of solid ultra-violent executions and then no wonder it got banned! @_@

If Rockstar actually let them see how the game plays (maybe a level played through in real time) they'd probably get a bit of context and see if there's more to it or not...

If it wasn't as realistic like God of War with all its monsters or something, then it'd probably get through fine...

I wonder if I killed myself and blamed FF7 that would get banned. [It'd be worth it though, for the lulz.]

But yeah, unless it's been said the rating in US is AO and Nintendo and Sony said they won't have AO games on their consoles.

Probably, after all they have swords in that game and you know how people love a good moral panic

*coughsonyarehypocrites* Its true, why do you think in Japan, they have a lot of Hentai Games O_O unless Hentai aren't AO

The decision was probably made because rather than just seeing the gore like on movies you can actually take on the role. Then again i've never played either game so i'm just going by what i've read.

The BBFC don't seem to have much faith in their own rating system anyway...
