Manga Entertainment discusses Freedom OVA release plans

Combat Butler
One of the big license announcements unveiled at this May's MCM London Expo came courtesy of Manga Entertainment, who confirmed that they will be re-releasing the Freedom OVA which was previously only available as a limited release from Beez Entertainment.

This seven-part OVA series, designed and commissioned by Katsuhiro Otomo (of Akira fame), has now had its release plans extrapolated upon somewhat courtesy of the distributor's Twitter feed, which has confirmed that Manga Entertainment are currently planning a "DoublePlay" release of this OVA containing the series on both DVD and Blu-Ray, together with a set of art cards and a slip cover to round off the package.

There's no confirmed release date at this point in time, but we'll keep you posted once we have one.

Oh because the demand for this must be sky high.

What the hell is with the trend towards these "double-plays"? I'd be willing to bet that no-one who owns a BD player is ever going to watch the DVDs contained within them, and that no-one who doesn't own a BD player is going to buy them in the first place. BD players are hardly so expensive any more that people feel the need to invest in the discs before they purchase a player. I'm going to stick all my "double play" DVD discs up on eBay soon in paper sleeves. But whatever, I have the Beez/Bandai version anyway.

And devilrules, do you have to keep linking to UKA in news stories? It makes us seem inadequate. Just steal their content instead.

Funimation have gone on record to explain that from their perspective it pretty much costs just as much to stick a free extra copy of the show in as it does to warehouse and stock two different products per show, and it gives them better coverage in brick and mortar stores which are finicky about how they categorise things (whether they go in the anime section or putting them in the general blu section). I didn't like it at first but I have come to like it now since the prices are so low that it isn't costing me anything and it makes decision making easier for my weary, overtaxed brain. It's also handy in cases where one version is messed up in some way to hedge your bets (e.g. forced subtitles on a blu, or missing extras on a DVD).

Makes lending stuff to my friends who don't have blu easier too.

Manga Entertainment do have Ouran High School Host Club and Fullmetal Alchemist (well, Brotherhood). Beez have Gurren Lagann and Cowboy Bebop.

That's my twitter account they were responding to! Really looking forward to this, can't find the Bandai set for anywhere under £100 so i've given up on buying that.

In a further question I asked if they had any plans for the other OOP releases like Jin-Roh or Yukikaze, simple "nope" was my answer =[

Friends. Children. I've heard these excuses before. I'm yet to see any conclusive proof that people who have these things invest in home video releases.

Ok ok, I admit it, by lending to friends I actually meant, "I can use them in my old laptop when I'm away from home and don't have net access".

;_;

...none of which emphasises the point that Freedom is actually a pretty darned solid show.

And it has a Rush reference in it! How can you not love a show that reference one of the kickest-assest of kick ass rock bands, eh?

The only BD player in the house is in my room. While it doesn't matter so much for anime since I'm the only one watching it, combos are useful for watching in the other rooms in the house.
When I got Avatar for my sister I got the BD combo so we could watch it in superior quality on BD if I dragged my laptop over and plugged it in, but she could still watch on DVD at any time on the DVD player in her room and the living room.

I sort of never bought this more due to lack of positive opinion on it rather than the price of Bandai's release... so I will probably pass again.

I sometimes lend DVDs to my sister, does that count? ^^; pre-edit edit: Heh, clearly this isn't that rare.

Jin-Roh on Blu-ray would be sweet. Until I checked Amazon just now I had no idea that it'd been released in the US. Must have gone OOP pretty quick.

I wonder how the licensing works in these situations. In the US Freedom on BD is (or was) Bandai Visual, while Freedom on DVD is Bandai Entertainment.
