Live-Action Akira given goahead

So, the live action Hollywood remake of Akira is to go ahead. For me this can only go one way - badly. I just know the Yanks are going to cock it up in some way.

Surely this is a rum-

I just hope they actually make it this time so we can finally, finally laugh at it, ignore it, or whatever it takes for Hollywood to leave anime alone forever and ever.

akira should be made by the same people who made live gantz.
hollywood screwed over
dragonball z
astro boy
guyver
and now akira.
i could pull a better movie out of my ass then what hollywood can do.

also there remakes are 120% s*** the originals are 120% better, il never forgive them what they did to halloween

As long as Warner Bros. don't green light Bleach...now that would be an even bigger travesty xD

Still, wish they didn't have to relocate the story to New Manhattan xD

I'm seriously considering boycotting it. Akira belongs in Tokyo. Jesus, will it even still be called 'Akira'? You know, on account of it not being Japanese and all anymore.

How involved is Katsuhiro Otomo in this project? Because that might swing my vote one way or another. EDIT: Just read it thoroughly. Otomo is executive producer. Could mean something. Could mean nothing. The worrying part is the meh director.

Animefreak's right. The Japanese are pretty good at doing live action anime films, they should be the ones doing it.Well at least Keanu Reeves is nowhere near it..... :D

@devilrules666 hollywood dont give a rats as about the fans there in it for the money.

£2000 wouldn't get them anywhere though; would probably cost more than that just to get a replica bike xD

Variety reports that Warner Brothers has given the green-light to the live-action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otmo’s Akira manga.

Warner Brothers first acquired the rights to Akira back in 2008 and the project has had a pretty torrid time getting this far. It was originally set to be directed by Ruairi Robinson who intended to make two films before Albert Hughes (From Hell, The Book of Eli) replaced him earlier this year. Then Hughes left due to creative differences with Warner Brothers. The project is now being handled by Jaume Collet-Serra (Orphan, Unknown). The budget is set at a modest ninety million dollars and the project has been reduced to one film. Fans will also be unimpressed by the fact that the script transposes the action from neo-Tokyo to New Manhattan, although a lot of other details like biker gangs and psychic powers remain the same.

Katsuhiro Otomo is getting the Executive Producer credit with Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way producing the film. The lead is expected to go to Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund.

If I remember correctly Astro Boy was a Hong Kong/UK co-production. I was a bit too harsh in my review because the film is pretty decent.

Akira does sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Live action adaptations of Anime fill me with dread. The end results usually make me feel embarrassed for being associated with the thing. They dont satisfy anime fans and the average film watcher will just think its rubbish, and thus anime is rubbish.

The original film is a beautiful thing to watch. Before the blu-ray was out here my BF downloaded a blu-ray rip of the film for us to watch. It turned out to be in japanese with no subs. We were just going to watch the first few minutes to see what it would look like, but the music and visuals sucked me in and before we realised we had watched almost the first hour of the film like that. The sound and visuals are such a big part of my enjoyment of Akira, I dont think a live action version would capture that.
