Ok here's the scoop. Over the last couple of days at college I've heard a few people talking about this show and they are getting the wrong impression of Japanese culture seeing them as simply perverts, weird angry animation freaks with no sense of humour.
One guy actually approached me today about the book I was reading ('Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End Of the World' by Haruki Murakami) and stated 'Oh you're into that pervert **** an'all'. Confused I replied '..what?' to which he responded 'all that japanese crap, didn't you see that Kelly Osbourne show with her showin' stuff about Japanese culture? They're all perverts'. Well what could say except 'If you think Kelly Osbourne is the leading expert on on other cultures then you must be on twice the dosage of whatever her dad's on'. Now of course this guy is an ignorant idiot who obviously believes only whatever he sees on TV but idiocy spreads and if enough people say something it becomes fact.
It's rather frustrating that just when anime is slowly creeping it's way into being more well know in this country that it could be potentially kicked down a hill by these so called documentaries about Japan. Entertaining as they are people seem to be taking them as fact.
Just my thoughts...
