Kara no Kyoukai BD Box Set to be distributed in the USA

I think the DVD quality is too good if they weren't going to sort out the BD that much.
Wow, seriously? Have you got your glasses on? ^^; The quality of the BD pic is up for debate (I am not as much of a hater as some of the upscale technique used for most things in Japan these days, and it's likely that not all the movies will be upscales), but the DVD is pretty bad.

The first pic is from a capture of when it aired on digital satellite, obviously horrible but I think it also shows that the colors were a little wrong on the DVD version (presuming it's not an issue with the setup the caps were taken from), as the skin tone is the same on 1 and 3 but not on 2.

Are you looking at the right picture? Look around Shiki's fringe and forehead, almost all of the artifacting and noise is gone, and the color reproduction is far more convincing. Whether this is worth the trade off of the "blurring" around the tips of her hair, etc, and the other small issues (the CG on her eyes is a bit too "obvious" in the BD picture imo) is a whole other discussion, but in the areas where the DVD picture looks clearly nasty, the BD picture looks clean imo.

I don't like DVDs any more, btw, which could be why I feel so strongly about it - people say you lose the "wow" effect of BD quite quickly, and you just come to take for granted the cleaner nature of the picture, but if you're regularly switching between watching anime on DVD and BD then every time you put a DVD on you think "guh".

No, I would buy the BD if it were me. Absolutely. There is a difference, just not one I find particularly striking. I have a feeling a set of films like this would benefit by the clearer motion high definition brings to the table too. I was never denying the isn't an improvement - that's the least you expect - just not a huge step-up. I wouldn't show that image to someone trying to convince them BD's are the superior format, basically.

My boxset arrived today.

I had to rush out to work, so not been able to watch anything or even look at the packaging too much, but suffice to say it "feels" well worth the money. Gorgeous release.

c-could you post some photos I'm now really curious to see what it looks like now then the one from up's site.

Currently "No longer available for purchase" at TRSI, though it may be a false alarm or people fiddling around with their baskets.

Mine has still not shipped. I miss EMS shipping from my more financially liquid days, from that side of the globe :)

I would have done, but my sister "borrowed" my camera the other day... she may have returned it while I was in work, if so I'll post some in a bit if she has.

edit: Pics will be up in a moment, in the pics thread.

So it looks like the US suppliers are going to sell out of their allocation of this... surprised? Interested for possible future releases?

I think that I would be most pleased if a Bakemonogatari set was next up >_>

Unlikely it's already got BDs, remastering them to have Eng subs is way too much effort.
It has to be BD as boxset only.
Durarara!! would be more likely.

The Baccano! BD set has sold fairly well in Japan (considering the type of release it is), I would be most disappointed if they didn't come through with a DRRR!! set by the end of the year.

I don't think that a US-friendly release of DRRR!! would make a great deal of sense so close to the US DVD release, though of course that doesn't stop them popping subs on a shiny Japanese blu-ray release for importers. I certainly wouldn't buy a KnK-style US release for something I've bought on DVD so recently just for a better picture ^^;

(Maybe if it had had some time to 'rest' I'd be more inclined to consider double dipping.)

I think we have to agree that the potential Japanese release of DRRR!! BD's will not be affected by the releases plans for the US DVDs. DRRR!! (which, let's not forget, was produced in HD and should look amazing on BD. You can already see the screenies comparing Baccano!'s BDs to its US DVD release, and that's enough of an upgrade) looked "likely" as soon as they announced the Baccano! set, I'd say it's set in stone now that that didn't flop. As far as TRSI etc getting it goes... yeah, possibly a different matter. Regular TV show, already had two releases (effectively) in English, Funi might look at them a bit iffy, etc. But then again, people said this set wouldn't sell, so...

Cant wait to get this :D

I cant believe how many people on ANN are whining about the price! They lynch those who paid honest money for a legal copy of it because they believe it will force future releases to be expensive (typical american thinking i suppose?)

£300 for a series of this quality is well worth it in my eyes. Though unlike in the review, i fell in love with the series straight away (then again i am a Type-Moon fanboy so that might be partly to blame lol!)

I do hope this gets a re-release at some point, I'd definitely pay £300 for it if I can get my act together and save up for it.
You had 3 months to save already.
Just have to import from Japan instead now (without booklet tl), and do it quickly before the price goes up too much.

Had I held an interest in the franchise in question, I would most probably have joined them.

The current interest in the series suggests that an inexpensive re-release may be foreseeable, though an official announcement to that end would help to address much of the anger.
