Kara no Kyoukai BD Box Set to be distributed in the USA

ilmaestro

State Alchemist
$400, rightstuf/Bandai store exclusive.

Basically the Japanese release six days later (February 8th in America), with a separate booklet that contains the translation of the "main" booklet.

Thoughts?

I might go for this. The only reason I haven't yet is that I've never seen the series and am not certain that it will be my kind of story, but the lovely art and positive buzz makes it tempting.

I was definitely going to buy it as a regular R1 release, but as a premium one some extra time is needed to loosen my wallet. In principle though it's cool to be able to get something so luxurious without much worry of customs fees (TRSI) and at a discount over Japan.

(I wonder how many other replies will be positive...)

I'd be on this if I had the cash, even as a blind buy. I've always been a fan of the packaging design. If I get one of the jobs i've just been interviewed for over the past week or so then i'm pre-ordering this.

The reaction over the mania AoDVD forums over the pricing has been laughable. They dont understand it is merely an import offered to them at a cheaper price, not an official R1 release.

It's not cheaper (it's that on Amazon Japan), the shipping might be but that's it.

It is cheaper. It's $400 where as amazon japan are selling it for $440 (36664 yen after tax is deducted) and cdjapan for $599.

Thus cheaper.

It is cheaper by my exchange rates. Not by a massive amount, but every little bit helps.

Amazon Japan has a 100% customs hit rate for me too, whereas I have never been hit from TRSI.

...I want, discussed this with Arby in the chat last night. Assuming I had the money and could grab hold of a multi-region blu-ray player I would get it in a heartbeat.

Only way this could be better then seeing that get translated would for someone to bring it out over here. Shame there's more chance of life on mars then that happening.

while I would like something like that, the price is waaay too high for me to buy that (the most I have spent on a single dvd/blu-ray purchase is just under £150 for the Escaflowne limited edition region 1 dvd box set).

I want to know who though it would be a good idea - we are in a global recession, it will be just after Christmas and it will be around a month after the R.O.D. blu-ray box set is released on region A.

It's the Japanese release, not a special US one. They don't have Christmas and the last big release was the Haruhi 2009 box, or Nanoha the movie 1st.

Have you ever ordered a single item of this value from them before?

The discs will be region free. Or, as someone pointed out on AoD, buying a region free DVD player would hardly be much of an extra expense after shelling out for the set in the first place. :p

Er... are we? I don't think we are.

Anyway, otaku are recession proof. :D

And like Reaper says, Christmas week is a regular retail week in Japan (not quite accurate to say "they don't have Christmas", but it's not Christmas as we know it, Jim), big games and movies always come out around then as New Years is their big "buy things" holiday.

More like five 50-ish minute films, two 110-ish minute films, a brand-new 30-ish minute OVA, and a bunch of extras, but yes, not exactly "standard" pricing.

This set will almost certainly not drop in price (well, not via TRSI, anyway, and maybe not at all if it goes OOP), but there should be a budget version issued as a "proper" R1 release some time from now.

parts 5 and 7 are about two hours, but yes these are OVA length (45-60mins). To put it another way it's the same as a 2 cour series (22eps) but split up diferently and on theatrical budget.
It costs the same as other limited ed boxsets for 26 ep series, where that's the first BD release. (except Haruhi)

Ironically a single item is most likely to get through unscathed of all, since it will be marked well below the magic value. I checked my old orders though for curiosity's sake since I can't think I have bought anything from that side of the world which cost so much since my PS2 BB bundle, and I think the most conspicuously incorrectly valued thing I have had so far from them in terms of size:customs declaration was 26 discs of UY all in one box (along with some other anime DVDs). My usual orders are only around ~$300 a pop but I'm willing to chance it.

If I decide to buy. Which I probably will as I'm usually flush in winter and it's pretty, and I can pad it out with some Gintama or something and pretend to myself that I paid a responsible amount overall for a series I'm not even sure I'll like.

I did think of that, but what I mean is are you sure that they would still mark this down, since it is so extremely more expensive than a regular release.

Also, how do they deal with such large orders as you usually make? Even if they marked the discs down at $1 each surely that would be over the limit? (Well, maybe not for $1, but still)

In both Japan and France, at least.

I usually cheekily just ask them to mark it down when I check out, and they've never refused or failed to do so. They're not always the cheapest but they do seem to be the most unhealthily obsessed with customer goodwill. Since their CEO is on AoD I guess we could ask him privately by mail :)

They usually mark the value at $5 per box set, but they seem to still avoid customs even when I order extravagantly. The last lot went via Europe (old DVD Pacific style) which probably helped, though they've been fiddling around with their international shipping a lot lately and this may not be the norm.

Anyway, I just ordered Shingetsutan Tsukihime to see if I like Type-Moon, so assuming I don't hate it I'm happy to be a potential guinea pig if anyone is worried.

Oh really? Didn't think they would be that far behind in France. Maybe I didn't expect them to have the last movie yet.

edit:

Ah, it will be interesting to see some people's reaction to this. ^^; But Tsukihime is a much better "will I like their stuff" idea than F/SN, in terms of having a view towards buying KnK.
