Polite reminder that marching into a UK anime forum and declaring that everyone is backwards isn't a great way to arrive on the scene. Also, 'virgin' and 'nerd' haven't been functional insults since the 90s.
Anime/manga are more mainstream in mainland Europe, it's true, but it's really exploded in the UK over the last couple of decades. If I read manga outside I'll get people of all ages coming up and chatting to me about it, if I wear a nerdy t-shirt I'll get compliments. A huge amount of adults love Pokemon a lot. We have anime-themed restaurants and gachapon/merchandise shops in big cities. Our cons are so popular that they're overflowing. If I take a bus ride anywhere in the capital I will see at least half a dozen people dressed in nerdy hoodies or with DBZ backpacks or something.
Everyone knows what it is, and the 'anime/manga = sex and violence' stereotype has largely died out around anyone younger than 50 since a ton of big mainstream shounen shows have penetrated the mainstream. Your Redditors are probably out of touch.
